Reflection  and Social Learning
It is helpful to give students a chance / an opportunity to thnk about the previous lesson.  After a field trip, a CD is made and enough copies for HALF of the students are distributed.  PAIRS of students sit at computers to select photos and write sentences about the photos.  Some photos are printed, sentences are put on the photos and a book is created for later REFLECTION.

Focus on the students’ interests
Go ahead...  leave the textbook and go to the internet.  Ask students to describe their city, country, profession, favorite sport...

Real Work
Phil’s “Three Store” Rule
Phil tells students to stop in at least THREE STORES to ask, “I don’t want to eat in a touristy restaurant.  Where would you eat lunch?”
Procedure:
1. Tell students to go to a café
2. On the way to the café, the students stop at three stores and say, “Excuse me.  I’m looking for a nice restaurant – can you recommend a restaurant on Las Olas?”
Students should write down the directions and repeat them to be sure that they understand the directions.
3. The teacher waits at the café.

Bring in experts
Videotape the expert while he or she talks.  Then record the questions that the students ask on the day….   The next day, allow the students to play, pause and stop to ask questions about the vocabulary used by the previous day’s speaker..
