Avro Arrow 25203 Project Update
Distributed to keep YOU informed on the ARROW progress

January, 2000 Vol3, Issue 1

PROJECT PROGRESS OVERVIEW
# A New Millennium has started, and we are still working towards completing the Arrow Replica. It sounds that we have been working on it for sometime - but really it has only been less than 20 months (on the cockpit "tub" ). Certainly there has been a lot of steel cut in preparation for assemblies and now that we have welding equipment on-site, being used on a regular basis, progress has been significant on a number of components. The Cockpit Tub, Nose Section (Sta.120 fwd.) and the Cockpit Structure (Sta. 120 - 292) are well underway. The Tail Cone sub-component (Sta. 803 aft) is started and many other sub-components are available for work to commence.
# The current target completion timing is Nov. / Dec. 2000

That's this year folks !

FINANCIAL PROGRESS
# As a direct result of the display at this yearr's CNE financial donations of about $1000. have been realized. The Millennium Bureau of Canada funding has started to be used and needed expenditures can now be undertaken.
# We are still expecting that some aviation related corporations might also sponsor this project in one form or another.

ENGINEERING PROGRESS
# The design details for most of the components of the Replica are now completed or underway. Engineering drawings have been prepared for the construction of the Cockpit Section of the Fuselage, the Radome / Nose Section. Shop floor adjustments and clarif ications continue as assemblies progress.
# A number of full sized drawings for the fabrication of shaping frames and wheel well doors have been completed and construction has started on these sub-components.
# The Inner Wing structural design details have been revised to simplify construction and work has commenced on the spars and ribs.
# Bill Tee has indicated research is continuing on the self-contained Power System, which will allow the Replica to be taxied, steered and brake controlled. The power generation and transmission design requirements are leading towards either an electric or hydraul ic system.
# There have been a number of specific production engineering details in the handling and welding of available materials. Stan Porter , P.Eng. has been guiding these activities and strength tests.

MATERIALS PROGRESS
# Steel sheet (0.04") materials have recently been donated by Dofasco and Stainless Steel sheet (0.015") materials have been donated by Samuel, Son & Co. Ltd. , so that the shear-webs of the Inner and Outer Wings can be fabricated with ease and have enough strength.
# Original parts from Avro Arrows continue to surface and are welcomed at the TAM.
# Equipment Needs are ever present as we progress on the various components. Of immediate need is a 3 Roller Sheet Bender (48" width) which will be required as we get into the skinning phases of various sections. i If you can help to find, or supply, same it would be much appreciated.

FABRICATION PROGRESS
# Currently there are about 10 sub-components underway with dedicated individuals and teams of volunteers making progress.
# The Joe Foster Team has the Cockpit ldblquote tubrdblquote nearing completion. The clamshell canopies are well underway in preparation for a fiberglass skin. A few instruments and controls are still needed - again i if you know of any which could be used, please contact the TAM or the Proj. Director.
# The Cockpit Structure is progressing well under the leadership of Bruno Quattrin and his assistant Issy Spinato. f169
# Welding operations by Jim Sullivan have commenced and structure is coming together, which is very encouraging.
# The Radome / Nose Section is also underway with the leadership of Mark Jeffreys and his assistant Stuart Ross .
# New Outer Wing spars and ribs have been started - but i a i major team effort is now required i to meet the schedule for these components. Shortly, a similar major effort will be required for the Inner Wings.

VOLUNTEERS INFORMATION
# It has been extremely encouraging to know that there are so many folks that want to become involved in this Arrow Project. There are about 6 sub-components ready to be started - all that is needed are leaders and volunteers.
# Now that you know work is progressing on the Arrow Replica, i would you please take a moment to call, fax or e-mail that you are ready to join the active volunteers.
# To lower our communication costs in providing this UPDATE to you, let us know your Fax # and/or e-mail address. You can Fax - any info, your Fax # and e-mail address directly to the TAM at:
