Croydon,  a borough of Greater London, England, created in 1965 by the amalgamation of the county borough of Croydon and the urban district of Coulson and Purley.

The new borough, located 10 miles (16kms) from central London, has an area of 37.2 square miles (96.3sq km).

Croydon, an old market town, was first mentioned in the Saxon charters of 809. Later it was a favorite residence of the archbishops of Canterbury.

    The modern borough was a suburban residential district connected by fast electric trains with central London. Before World War II London's major airport was at Croydon, but this site was abandoned because it did not permit expansion. Croydon is a major shopping center for Greater London and has a number of light industries.

     Croydon Technial Collage and Croydon Collage of Art are located there. Ther urban district of Coulson and Purley was a residental suburb.
