I have been a huge fan of Anne McCaffery's Pern books for years. I have almost all of them, including a few books by other authors that accompany the series.

The series takes place on the faraway planet of Pern, where the voracious Thread falls from the skies. To combat this deadly menace, the early settlers used the extensive knowledge brought with them and created the dragons, bio-engineering them from the small dragon-like creatures (later called Fire Lizards) that called Pern home. The saga covers from when the settlers landed (Dragonsdawn) until nearly the end of the Last Pass of the Red Star (Skies of Pern).
