Knitted bib by Lenore English
Materials: 4 – ply cotton worsted yarn, one 2 oz. skein, size 7 needles.
Finished size: 8” x 8”
Gauge: 9 sts = 2” in garter stitch
Cast on 18 stitches.
Knit one row.
Knit 17 sts, turn, knit back.
Knit 16 sts, turn, knit back.
Continue to knit one less stitch every other row. Knit down to 2 sts, then start increasing.
Knit 2 sts, turn, knit back.
Knit 3 sts, turn, knit back.
Knit 4 sts, turn, knit back.
Continue to knit one more stitch every other row, until you knit all 18 sts and back.
Begin to decrease again, repeat the short rows three more times.
Bind off after 4 corners have been turned.
Sew or weave the bound off edge to the cast on edge.
Ties: Pick up and knit 11 sts along one edge of the bib, beginning at the right-hand edge. Knit one row plain. Next row: Knit to the last 3 sts, k2 tog, k1. (shaping for neck edge) Repeat these two rows until 3 sts are left, then knit in I-cord (or crochet a chain) for 12”. Finish the other side the same.
Notes: The size of the bib can be changed by adding or subtracting stitches when casting on. 4 stitches would make about a 2” difference. The 8” bib used most of a 2 oz skein. It would also make a good dishcloth without the ties.
