Standards-based Classroom http://score.kings.k12.ca.us/ Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study http://nces.ed.gov/timss www.math-success.com Hello, I'm a tutor for SAT and FCAT. I’ve created a free account… on a web site for students to practice with… Step one… go to www.number2.com --- it's a free tutorial web site. Step two (it’s really easy to sign up a free account, but I’ve done it for the students) The username is: floridasat The password is catcat Your child can begin using this free service (without needing to register)! Steve McCrea, FCAT and SAT teacher I'm not affiliated with www.number2.com (named for the pencil). I'm interested in showing parents how to assist their children in doing better on standardized tests. I have a method that works with many students -- it involves parents as coaches. I"m happy to share my "secrets" (they are standard test-taking tips found in most SAT prep books). ------------------------------------------------------------- SCHOOL GROUPS and HOMESCHOOLING GROUPS My presentation is between 15-30 minutes (depending on the interest of your group). I give a free sample of materials from at least 5 web sites and I list the web sites so parents can take advantage of these effective sites. I've found that 75-to-80% of parents can learn to be their children's coaches, reducing the cost of SAT tutoring services. (The other 20% decide to hire a tutor.) If your group is interested in my free presentation, please contact me at 954 646 8246 or email at englishlesson@mail.com ------------------------------------------------------------ People (especially busy parents) usually look at photos and at some parts of a page until they get bored and move on. Most people give a page less than 15 seconds to catch their attention... If you don’t have time to read the full document that follows, please read these three statements: ? Math is more than formulas and memorizing multiplication. ? Math problems can be interesting. ? Group activities can help many students who don’t learn much from a lecture. The goal of this paper is to motivate you to visit web sites (start now with www.nctm.org), print interesting problems, and work with your child (student). If you have questions, write to me. Steve McCrea englishlesson@mail.com Why do parents need to know about NCTM? By Steve McCrea SAT tutor I am certified to teach mathematics in the public schools of Florida. I scored 800 (a perfect score) on the SAT in 1975. Since then, I’ve tutored students in the test-taking skills of math tests like the SAT, FCAT and GRE. And yet…I went back to university to learn about new teaching methods. There is a new way of looking at math in the classroom. NCTM The National Council of Teachers of Math collected suggestions on how to improve the teaching of math and you can read the suggestions at www.nctm.org -- but here’s the essence: ? Don’t let students use calculators. TEACH them how to use calculators. (Read that sentence carefully.) Teach students when to use a calculator. It can be used as the “what if?” machine to help students explore patterns. ? Math is more than rote memory. Yet if you need to use a calculator to divide 6 into 42, then you need to memorize those tables! ? Teach to several learning styles. Some students need to watch, some need to manipulate objects, others need to do something while learning, others need to discover. ? Don’t lecture. Don’t talk at students. Don’t teach out of a textbook. (Huh? That’s how my teachers taught me and I scored 800 on the math SAT.) ? Let groups of students discover the answer. Give challenging and interesting problems and create a structured way of working in groups. (Huh? That’s not the way I learned math.) When I told a 50-year-old engineer about these new “Math Standards” and the new way of teaching, he scoffed, “Math is about the teacher, the student and the book. Eventually, it’s just the student and the problem on the paper.” That’s PRECISELY the traditional attitude that NCTM is trying to expand. Yes, most students will have to confront math problems on paper. But NCTM wants teachers to offer different ways of presenting the information… and NCTM wants teachers to allow students to discover math. Consequences for schools 1. More training for teachers (it’s difficult to change teaching methods) 2. More materials for the classroom (it’s not just textbooks) 3. More preparation before the class (group activities and pair work require preparation time) 4. Activities on computers require preparation by the teacher (it’s tough to remember the right web addresses) OBSTACLES 1. Most teachers don’t want to spend the extra time to prepare for class (This new method is very tiring! I’ve tried to integrate these new standards and it requires more preparation time than I imagined.) 2. Most students consider the cooperative activities to be games. 3. Most cooperative activities are not in one book – so it takes a lot of time to find the activities. 4. Many classrooms don’t have enough computers. 5. It’s difficult to schedule students to rotate through a program (so that every student has a change to try the program) 6. Many students don’t have computers at home. That’s why the list above is compiled for you. – just click on the web sites and navigate through the problems and simulations. REPEAT: Web Sites The most important sites above are the lists at matti.usu.edu and at www.nctm.org... and the FREE SAT COURSE offered by www.number2.com -- Parents can have a sure way of making math fun and interesting. These web activities are interesting. Your student's teachers are gettting the basics of math across to your child. You don't know if the teacher is using these "challenging problems," but you can make suret hat your child is exposed to these challenges. Do not assume that time spent on the web sites is time well-spent. “Mom, I just spent two hours on those stupid math activities. I hate them.” “Oh, sure, I looked at every simulation.” PARENTS: sit next to your child and explore with her or him. Learn with your child, especially if the student is a social learner (and likes learning by talking). |
Highlights The "What if?" machine -- Know when and how to use a calculator How do Japanese and German teachers conduct their math classes? p. 245 and p. 343 Homework is Individual Practice (not performance) More homework than 2 hours per night results in no improvement in achievement. (total homework, covering all subjects) After School Job: Up to 10 hours per week has a positive impact on grades, but when work east up more tan 10 hours, grades tend to fall. (Perhaps students who work a frew hours a week learn to manage their time bettter...but students who work 20 hors or more simply can not find enoug time to give to homework.) |
