English for Workforce Development “100 Web Sites for English Students Who Can’t Go Online in the Classroom” The goal of the “Best 100 Web sites” is to present to students in 9 weeks the web sites that will prepare them for the workforce. The ESOL program in Florida aims to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in a way that leads to making them able to participate in the Workforce. My classroom is in a mall in Broward County. There are 4 computers in the classroom but no online connection. I have 45 students and they are in their seats between 6:00 and 8:45 p.m. What can I present to them to prepare them for the workplace? The best information is on the web, but I can’t get to the web in my classroom. So I have created this project to get web sites on paper and placed in front of my students. They can read at home, they can read in the class and they can read on the bus. The format of the book will be similar to the computer screen and the students can page through the book, learning as they go… Very similar to the ONLINE experience. The students will eventually sit in front of a computer screen and visit each of these web sites as part of their homework. “Visit the same web site and write two sentences about another web page that you visited. Write the address of the web page and explain why the page is useful to you.” That will lead to the NEXT project of 100 USEFUL WEB SITES (an online-guide with links to these pages that students enjoy so much). THE NEXT STEP… I sent this email to organizations that have useful information for my students… I hope they will give permission to compile this project. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HERE IS THE LETTER THAT WENT TO WEB MASTERS… Dear WEB MASTER… a short request… from a teacher of English (in a public school) Hi, I’m a teacher in South Florida. I teach adults who want to learn to speak English. We don’t have a lot of money for books, so I would like permission to print this article (which appears on the web page cited above) and distribute it to my class of English students. They are adults and they do not have access to the internet in the classroom. Many have access to the internet at home. I believe that discussing the web page in my class will lead some of my students to learn more from your website. I need your permission to make photocopies of this web page for my class. I need your permission because the “fair use” doctrine for copyright protection says that I can’t make copies if I intend to avoid the purchase of a book. Well, I don’t have money for books for my classroom, so I need your permission to make multiple copies of this page from your web site. ALSO: I’m compiling a collection of 100 useful web pages for English students to study. I also need permission to make copies of your page so I can show your page to other teachers… and they will want to make copies, too. I’m compiling “BEST 100 Web Sites for English Students Who Can’t Go Online in the Classroom.” I think your organization will benefit because many of my students will see your organization’s web page on paper and might eventually visit the page, and they will view the ads on your web page. I agree to reproduce the page as it appears on my computer screen and to send you a copy of the final book when it is done. I plan to sell this list of web pages to other teachers and the profits (if any) will go to print more copies for my students. I hope you will support this project by emailing back with your permission. Thanks!
