There is no excuse for tolerating continued predatory and often illegal over-exploitation of the World's rainforests. The World's citizenry, governments and other institutions must bring to bear all available resources to end indiscriminate rainforest loss and diminishment. Reasonable environmentally based management of rainforests, independently certified as meeting or exceeding current Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, would maintain many biodiversity and ecosystem values found in the World's rainforests. Placing certified sustainable rainforest management within the context of large and strictly protected areas may be the last best opportunity to achieve landscape, regional and global forest sustainability. A recent study found that just 10% of Brazil's rainforest, if managed in a certifiably sustainable manner, could meet all existing demand for tropical hardwood. Much of the rest might then be declared untouchable as strictly protected global ecological preserves. Advocating for Amazonian rainforest conservation and sustainable use is not about stopping economic advancement in Brazil. Properly managed forests can yield a good income forever. Given that most timber felled in Amazonia is used in Brazil - it is crucial that this point be made again and again. How quickly Brazilian consumers switch to demanding certified timber - and there are signs that this is starting to happen - may well determine the future of Amazonian rainforests, and ultimately the World's global ecosystem. It is time to do whatever is necessary to promote and achieve certified management of rainforests within large protected areas. Write letters, buy only FSC timber, lobby governments to stop illegal logging, protest and organize. The survival of Gaia and humankind is at stake. g.b. ******************************* RELAYED TEXT STARTS HERE: Title: Managing the rainforests Source: Copyright 2001 The Economist, Economist.com Date: May 10, 2001 "Sustainable management" could help to save the Amazonian rainforest without harming economic development EMPTY fields, as far as the eye can see, line the highway for most of the 300km (186 miles) from Belem, eastern Amazonia's main city, to the timber-cutting town of Paragominas. Once it was all forest, but since the 1970s most of the trees in a broad strip beside the road have been cut-not just to extract timber, but to clear pasture for cattle-raising, encouraged by subsidies and tax incentives. Now, though, most of the fields lie empty and are becoming overgrown with scrub. Cows are seen so infrequently that they might be imagined to be an endangered species. The deforestation, mostly in the past 30 years, of 14% of the Brazilian part of Amazonia (about a third of the Amazon rainforest, the world's biggest, is over the border in other countries) has been as much an economic as an environmental disaster. The usable timber would be ripped out of a stretch of forest and the rest would then be burned, because the land would often be worth more when cleared than it had been as untouched forest. This value, however, was due partly to excessive optimism over the region's agricultural potential, and partly to a set of economically perverse incentives provided by the government. When farming was actually tried, it was frequently found to be unprofitable. And many did not even bother to try. Some chopped down the trees, grabbed the grants and then abandoned the land. Others used the "farms" they carved out of the jungle to disguise (highly taxed) profits on other businesses as farming profits (which used to be tax-free). As a result, there are now about 165,000kmý of abandoned land in Brazilian Amazonia. In recent years, the handouts and tax breaks that promoted deforestation have been reduced. As a result, good-quality forested land can be worth as much as 40% more than cleared land. A law passed in 1998 introduced stiff penalties for cutting trees without permission from Ibama, Brazil's environmental-protection agency. Though deforestation seems to have slowed since the mid-1990s (see chart), new figures due shortly will show that last year's deforestation was little different from that in 1998 and 1999, and about 1/2% of the forest was chopped. Read and find the errors in the composition... Where is the limit? The theme is absolutely current and nearly each newspaper and economic-magazine are publishing stories about this subject. I talk about the excessive salaries, bonus and fees to the CEO‘s and - above all, to the members of the board. Let me tell you some examples of this incomprehensible development. Erich Honegger, the steped back chairman of the board of the SAir Group, will get a bonus of 5 million Swiss Francs, when he will left the company in a few weeks. Well-understood, we talk about the man, who worked for one and a half year by swissair and who‘s responsible for the today‘s disaster of our national airline. Another example is Daniel Affolter, chairman of the board of the swiss leading tour operator named KUONI. Daniel Affolter, a tough guy in fact, but without any succesful history, get a daily salary of 10‘000 Swiss Francs and a bonus of more than 5 millions Swiss Francs per year. That will resulting in a salary of approximately 25‘000 Swiss Francs per day. And last but not least, there is Mr. Martin Ebner, who makes the money by «buy and sell» of companies. He buys stocks of different enterprises and sell these soon as possible to the next. No matter, who the demander is, but each time with a excessive profit. A current example is the deal between Novartis and Roche. M. Ebner sold 20 % of his Roche share capital to the biggest rival, to Novartis. This deal brought Martin Ebner a profit of 4,9 million Swiss Francs, paid by hundreds of employees, who will lose their jobs, because this deal will ending in a merger. In other words, Martin Ebner ignores his social responsibility. And at the same time he makes more money per month than a «normal» employee during his whole ?life time?. Such and other cases are danger. In my opinion because of three different reasons: 1. The difference between the rich and poor society will grow up in an absolutely dangerous dimension. 2. For the «normal» employees ist this excessive development completely incomprehensible. In other words, the empolyees lose their ?healthy attitude? regarding work and salary 3. The employees lose their confidence in the leadership. In other words, the employees will miss the shining example. They will miss sombody, for whom it pays to fight. Let me just to sum up. I think, it‘s high time to break out of this absolutely destructive system, for a new rules in the ?social and economic scene? and for a go back to the real values. Real values, wich guarantee the most important capital we need. I talk about the social freedom, which so necessary and important for a succesful managing of our future. By Ruedi Huber |
