How to learn another language...

Don't.

Don't think about "learning Spanish" or "I'm going to learn how to speak Italian."  That sounds so HARD!

Think about
learning a few phrases that you will find easy.

Remember, it took you 10 or 20 years to become a good speaker of Egnlish.
Think about learning to "get around" with useful questions.

What are the questions that you want to ask?

What do you want to tell people about yourself and about the USA?
Write the answers (in English) to these questions and then ask Mr. Mac or someone who knows the language to translate the sentence into your new language.   Don't learn grammar and vocabulary. Learn sentences that are fun to say and useful to YOU.

My wife waits for me at 2:30 p.m.
Ma femme m'attends a deux heures et demi.  That's what I learned in 9th grade about French. Ugh. Not useful....until I was in Europe, in Paris, in 1994, at the age of 36, and I told a concierge:  "Ma femme m'attend, donc je dois partir."  My wife is waiting for me, so I should leave.

However, when I look at the following list of questions, these are questions that I use every day.

Where do you come from?
Where were you born?
What do you like about your city?
What should I see?  What is important to see in this city?
When it is hot, do you go to the beach?
What is your favorite beach in Italy?
What kind of food is popular in this city?
Where is a good place for lunch?

Write the questions that you expect that you will want to ask.  Then ask Mr. Mac or someone to translate these questions.  Because you want to learn these questions, you are creating your own "textbook" and you are creating the need in your brain to learn the new words.  NOW you are ready for language learning!

FIVE ways to learn another language quickly.

1.  Use short words in English. Speak Spanish or Engtalian.

If you learn how to say "Cat" and "Street", use those words.

"Hey, look at the gato crossing the calle!"

2.  Make associations and connections to words you already know.  Cat is like GAT, so we say GATO.

3.  Look for similarities.

In Spanish, the word for "car" is "coche" -- it sounds like "coach" and we can think about riding in a COACH like a stagecoach, pulled by horses.

4.  Think of situations and then memorize the sentence.

I am pleased to meet you.

Piacere di fare la sua conoscenza.
PLEASED to MAKE your "KNOWING"

Piacere
Pleased
di fare
to make
la sua
your
conoscenza.
acquaintance or knowing about you.

5.  Listen to audio tapes and CDs and watch video tapes, over and over and over.  Practice.  You are creating new muscles.  Ask Mr. Mac for his ITALIAN and FRENCH CDs... the videos can run on computer.   Watch each video at least 5 times so that you can improve your pronunciation.  Then return the CD and get the next level.   There are 25 minutes of videos per CD.
