Meet Mr. McCrea, Math Instructor TECHNOLOGY: I use digital videos, camera, iMac (QuickTime and .avi formats, iMovie editing), CD burners and the Internet. I’ve worked with Dennis Yuzenas, a teacher in West Palm Beach, to bring computers into the classroom for off-web browsing (putting web sites on hard drives, ensuring access to desired web sites). I enclose a CD with sample web sites (viewable on a PC, not a Mac). MY MATH METHODS: VISUAL and TACTILE. I am a fan of Michael Starbird, a professor at University of Texas. I try to adapt portions of his textbook, The Heart of Mathematics, for my teaching. He admits that when he first studied calculus in high school, he didn’t “get it” – he just applied it to formulae. Only later did he get the soul of the subject. I have been adapting and simplifying his methods of teaching math (aimed at liberal arts university students) for my math classes in high school. For more about Starbird, go to I like to innovate and experiment: please see my web page, which describes the “Internet on CD” approach to teaching (adapted from Dennis Yuzenas). www.oocities.org/teachers2teachers/internetoncd.html Steve McCrea, globalcooling@pstcomputers.com Technology I was the “Technology in the ESOL Classroom” trainer for the ESOL department at HACC. I introduced “Internet on CD” to my department. http://www.oocities.org/teachers2teachers/internetoncd.html I brought my own computers (PC and iMac) into the classroom and trained 85 students to use CDs. Half of them also learned to burn CDs. I trained my students to use digital cameras. We placed those images on CD. I teach students to make web sites: oocities.com, angelfire.com, freeservers.com. My web pages can be found through my central web site, www.teacherstoteachers.com … I encourage my students to use the Internet for FCAT review. Visual Math: I created a “math in the gym” program for students who failed the FCAT and HSCT. http://www.oocities.org/talkinternational/gym2003.html Math Rap: I encouraged my students to convert math formulae into “math raps” (viewable on the internet). http://www.oocities.org/teachers2teachers/mathrap.html Scores: 800 Math, 720 Verbal (SAT); 800 Math, 700 Verbal (GRE) I can teach students to improve their scores (former tutor for Princeton Review). Multicultural Background Math A-level, British G.C.E. system. Score: “B” I learned Calculus at a high school in Switzerland (www.aiglon.ch). I speak French and Spanish, some Russian, German and Italian. AP Math Calculus AB, Score: 3 (received one semester of college credit at Princeton University) References: Diane Allen, math teacher, Plantation High School Kathleen Doody, assistant principal at Hallandale Adult Community Center, 954-457-2510 Dennis Yuzenas, www.whatdoyaknow.com, Middle School teacher www.msoa.com, 561-792-0740, yuzenas@prodigy.net On May 31, 2003, at JFK Airport, an individual, later discovered to be a public school teacher, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a compass, a protractor, and a graphing calculator. Authorities believe he is a member of the notorious Al-Gebbrah movement. He is being charged with carrying weapons of math instruction. (source: email) |

More about McCrea ------------------------------------------------------------- Steve McCrea witnessed the impact of the OPEC embargo in Europe in October 1973. Mandatory “no-drive Sundays” and other regulatory measures to respond to the artificial shortage of oil left an impression on him that governments generally could react better to crises. He has worked to develop public policy to better respond to anticipated and unanticipated changes. Steve consults on alternative fuel vehicles, carbon offset strategies and innovative teaching methods. He compiled a book for consumers about electric vehicles (Why Wait for Detroit? Drive an EV Today), now in its third edition. Education is an important venue for preparing consumers for shifts in technology and public policy. McCrea is currently working with www.whatdoyaknow.com on developing a series of eBooks to supplement traditional textbooks for the secondary school system. As a consultant for the South Florida Regional Planning Council, Steve coordinated the launching of a US Department of Energy Clean Cities program in South Florida. The project brought together major stakeholders in industry, public and private sectors. McCrea founded the Institute for the Post-Petroleum Era, as a part of The Center for Creating the Future. As a consultant to The Center, he speaks at conventions, trade shows and workshops; publishes a web-based treatise on the role of alternative fuels in the post-petroleum era; and advocates a wider discussion of alternatives to petroleum, focusing on improved land-use As a consultant to various companies on electric and propane vehicles, he researched, wrote and distributed books, articles and press releases for clients. He completed a 3000-mile demonstration of propane-powered vehicles (1993). He conducts on-going consulting about how to select the right alternative fuel for the right application. While working at the U.S. Department of Energy, Washington, D.C. as a conservation program specialist, he compiled information about the National Energy Strategy to prepare updates for the Assistant Secretary, Renewable Energy Division. In 1995, he established the Global Cooling Action Campaign, with the “Global Cooling Cars” sticker program. He continues to consult on carbon emission programs, compiling a program to link carbon emissions with tree planting. He promoted the program in the travel industry, creating the “Trees for Travel” certificate. He holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton).
