The School
Improvement Survey

The Great School Checklist

Remember Deming and his Total Quality Management model for successful organizations? (Google search time!) He made it quite clear that great organizations are constantly assessing where they are and planning on where they want to be.

Great Schools get all “Excellents”!

Your school may want to use this 30 item checklist as a
starting point for school improvement.

Remember: This is a tool for positive action!
If you don't feel this survey meets your needs do something radical--make your own checklist.  Each Category gets one of these ratings: Needs work / OK / Excellent

The Office

1. Do you feel welcome and encouraged to make inquiries?
2. Is there more than one route to make a suggestion, to plead your case, or to have concerns aired?
3. Do parents share “power” with teachers and administration?
4. Is there more than one route to make a suggestion, to plead your case, or to have concerns aired?
5. Are staff members visible and accessible?
6. Are teachers teaching in their certified areas?
7. What are the rewards for successful teachers?

A Rigorous Workout. Talking with teachers.   1. In each subject: are state standards followed? (scope and sequence and state standards)
2. Are classes centered on textbook learning situations? (An Excellent rating here is a "NO" to this question.)
3. Hands On learning is the rule, not the exception.

What’s Taught--What’s Not?
1. Is state test prep the rule of the day? ("NO" is Excellent.)
2. What kinds of testing or assessments are used?
3. Do teachers coordinate homework assignments and lessons? (Do teachers "Team teach"?)
4. Is homework part of a behavior management system or a legitimate extension of a skill being taught?
5. Well developed after school and before school programs keep students engaged in the learning process.

Size Matters!
1. Is the size of the student body appropriate for the school building.
2. Portable classrooms—a few are acceptable, acres of portables aren’t acceptable!

The Use of Technology!

1. Are there computers in every classroom.
2. Are computers and presentation technologies employed in every class?
3. The school website—is it an extension of the school?
4. Is the Media Center well-equipped?
5. Is technology student accessible? (before and after school)

The Physical Plant. Just walking around…
1. The front of the school is inviting.
2. Hallways are clean, well lit, and have appropriate signage.
3. The front office is set up for people—chairs, copies of the latest school newsletters and student newspapers, a “brag wall”, and smiling people that make you feel welcome.
4. Bathrooms. Paper towel and soap dispensers that actually have paper towel and soap to dispense speaks volumes about how the administration is administering!
5. Athletic Facilities are well cared for.
6. Cafeteria is clean and inviting.
7. Bulletin boards trumpet student achievement.
8. Landscaping is well maintained.
