Return to Main Page (Click HERE) Get ready for college Welcome to the Parents' Page Teachers to Teachers dot com I have a short time with you. You are busy running your life and preparing the way for your child. So I will be brief: 1. There are errors on this page. 2. Math teachers believe that math skills are central to a good education. I know that math is a support, not a core skill. I have met many able students who fear some part of math. They are clever and they survive by going around their weaknesses in their lives. Math is tertiary to (1) good "people skills" and good sense, and (2) languages, ethics, science, languages (yes, languages should appear twice) history and thinking on their feet. Math supports these two areas of instruction. 3. Students come in a variety of learning skills. You can see a short list by clicking HERE (Learning Styles). Another web site is www.mathpower.com/brain.htm 4. You can spend up to $500 by sending your child to a prep course for the SAT. Or you can participate in the process by visiting SATWORDS and by signing up for WORD TO CELL PHONE. 5. There are many good schools and colleges in the USA and elsewhere. You might consider following the VORNLE METHOD to help your child gain entrance. 6. There are errors on this page. 7. I have a page about the SAT for Parents. 8. I believe that too much math takes away time for the student to explore other subjects. JUST ENOUGH MATH is the goal. 9. I welcome your comments. I'm still learning about education and the process of learning. I hope these points will help you assert yourself... 10. Remember, most businesses are owned by people who did not complete university. Businesses hire people who completed university. It's a sobering realization. I'm not advocating that students should ignore the importance of getting a college degree and I don't suggest that a state university is equal to an Ivy League education. I invite you to visit Steve Alford's web site to view an Ivy League standard in a non-Ivy League classroom. 11. I'm passing to you what I've learned about active learning, learning styles, and how children learn at different ages. One of mentors is Dennis Yuzenas at www.WhatDoYaKnow.com and he is available to speak with you at 561 792 0740. Write your questions to yuzenas@prodigy.net. Like me, he is available for free consultation and also for consultancy. Before acting on any of the suggestions on this web site, you are advised to speak with other professionals. Thank you for your time. Please let me know how I can assist your child with free web pages and email messages. S. Are you Flexible? The point of math is to show that you are flexible. In general I like Algebra and I find many students don’t see the relevance. I try to convey the sense that they are engaging in an exercise of “flexibility.” If you can see that x = 50/100 = 0.5 = 400/800 = 50% = 4.25/8.5 = -35/-70, then you have a flexible mind. |
