Here are some projects

1/
The NEOPETS.COM book will be paid for on its completion....  CLICK HERE to VISIT Neopets.com

ACTUAL TEXT
Each page of the neopets.com book will turn into $6, $3 for each boy.  You are joint authors so you share the wealth.

Creating a cool front cover will give you $30 to split.  If you create the cover on a computer program, then you get another $20.  It can be a MS-word document.

2/ SCIENCE WORK
The plumeria sprouts:  the science experiment requires 4 sprouts to be watered every other day.  If I visit your home and see on Jan. 2, 2003 that the 4 plants are still in their pots, then the science experiment will be concluded.  Observations need to be made about each stick .  The two sticks that are not in soil are supposed to be planted in soil.  Keep them out of direct sunlight.  Maybe it’s a good idea to put a bowl or plate under each pot.  Make sure the dog doesn’t disturb the experiment.

All of this can be viewed and reviewed on a web site at www.oocities.org/teachers2teachers/plumeria.html

3/ READING

1 newspaper article each day with a summary (10 cents each)

Guidelines for writing a summary of a Classic Comic book

===============================================================
a)     Describe the plot and list the major characters (40% of the grade)

b)     describe one of the heroes (20%) and one important action by the hero

c)     describe one of the villains in the story (20%) and one important action by the villain

d)     What did you learn from the story (the moral of the story)?  20%

Deduct 10% if there are spelling errors

Deduct 20% if the summary is not emailed.  (if you just write the work on paper, you don’t get full marks)

To get the full $5 for each story, you need to complete all full marks.

Total word count must be more than 150 words

EXAMPLE

a)     Describe the plot and list the major characters (40% of the grade)

The story is Walden Two.  The author is BF Skinner, a noted clinical psychologist and fellow who trained pigeons to fly to targets in WW2.  The narrator of the story is a reporter who visits a communal living facility.  The protagonist (the director of the facility) gives a tour of the facility and explains the concepts behind Walden Two.  The narrator leaves the facility and ponders whether he will join the commune.

b)     describe one of the heroes (20%) and one important action by the hero. The director of the facility is clearly the most important figures in the story.  His will keeps the facility on track because he ensured, as a founder of the community, that no one person could control the destiny of the village.  The community makes decisions in a council and the will of one person does not make a difference.  Decisions must be unanimous.

c)     describe one of the villains in the story (20%) and one important action by the villain.
The narrator is really the villain, if any, since he continually doubts the sincerity of the people who are in the community.  His doubting leads him to reject the community and he fails to see the long range benefits.  He fails to get inside the heads of other people and can't imagine why old traditions could be replaced.

d)     What did you learn from the story (the moral of the story)?  20%

The author is trying to create a distinctive alternative to conventional society.  The story shows how rational decision and reevaluation of traditions can create a more efficient arrangement in a community.   I concluded that communal living should not be dismissed.  MORAL:  don’t dismiss what you have not thoroughly investigated.  Look for the positive parts of another culture and keep an open mind about alternatives to the way we do things.

This summary gets full marks since there are no spelling errors and since it is emailed.  I also used Microsoft word’s spellchecker to make sure there are no grammar and spelling errors.
