If you want a particularly enlightening experience (to find out what college and a stimulating intellectual relationship with a professor can be), visit Dr. Steven Alford’s web site at Nova Southeastern University at
www.nova.edu/~alford.

Dr. Alford is a very challenging teacher and remarkably accessible.  He actually takes time to write back, even to students who are not currently in his class.  He regards any inquiry as a possible lead to be a new student for Nova University, but also he is interested in providing the next step in any student’s evolution or development.… why not explore his web site?  You are advised to look for teachers who create a similarly stimulating web site…

A difficult moment in a teacher’s life: realizing that a student needed encouragement (and the teacher did not follow through).    Another difficult moment is when I find an article or a web site that I think might be helpful for one of my students
…but I don’t know how to get in touch with that student. It is always a pleasure for me to write letters of recommendation and to make suggestions – good teachers extended themselves for my benefit and I’m happy to follow their examples.   I can't contact you if I don't have your email address.   If you wish to receive an email message now and then (especially to reinforce the vocab words), please send me an email message inviting me to send you articles: mistermath@comcast.net.

I wish you good luck in your explorations.  Feel free to contact me at

Are you Flexible?

The point of math is to show that you are flexible.

In general I like Algebra  and I find many students don’t see the relevance.  I try to convey the sense that they are engaging in an exercise of “flexibility.”

If you can see that x = 50/100 = 0.5 = 400/800 = 50% = 4.25/8.5 = -35/-70, then you have a flexible mind.
