THE ALL MIGHTY SARLACC IN THE GREAT PIT OF CARKOON

The Sarlacc Pit in the original release

The Sarlacc Pit in the Special Edition

The Sarlacc rests in the Great Pit of Carkoon in the Dune Sea on the planet of Tatooine.  It is an omnivorous creature which has a diameter of approximately 3 meters. It is lined with three rows of inward-pointing, razor sharp teeth. The body of the sarlacc is buried deep beneath the sand and it may be as large as 100 meters in length. The sarlacc uses tongue-like tentacles to grab prey from the surface and drag them down into its giant "beak". The highly unstable and shifting sands of the Pit of Carkoon supplies most of the sarlacc's prey. If a creature slips into the pit, it rarely is able to escape without assistance from someone or something outside of the pit. Any type of frenzied struggle to get out of the pit only serves to notify the sarlacc of the presence of prey and the struggle also sends the prey closer to the sarlacc. The sarlacc has a highly effective digestive system which allows prey to be digested over extremely long periods of time and allows it to store prey until sustenance is needed. Local legend states that digestion takes approximately one thousand years.  Boba Fett is the only person known to ever escape the Great Pit and says it found him "indigestible."

The newly added "beak"

DIANOGA

Dianoga was the creature Luke encountered in the DEATHSTAR trash compactor.

EWOKS

Wicket W. Warrick is the Ewok that took Leia to safety.

Ewoks are the playful creatures on the Sanctuary moon of Endor that helped the Rebels defeat the Imperials and destroy the shield generator protecting the second DEATHSTAR.

KRAYT DRAGONS

Krayt Dragons are very large carnivorous, reptillian-like creatures which are native to Tatooine. They live in the mountains surrounding the Jundland Wastes. Krayt dragons are considered to be the top predator on Tatooine. However, not much else is known about the krayt dragon. This is primarily because the krayt dragon is very reclusive. Also, due to the aggressive nature of the krayt dragon, it is rather foolish to go searching for this elusive predator because the odds are heavily against surviving a personal encounter with one of these creatures.

WAMPAS

Wampas are the ruling predator of Hoth.  They are approximately 3 meters tall, have razor-sharp claws, and a fanged maw. Older wampas possess horns which grow larger with age. They have an acute sense of smell which aids them in searching for prey. Also, wampas have thick, white fur. Wampas roam the icy plains of Hoth and prey on animals such as the tauntaun. They make their home in ice caverns beneath the surface of Hoth. Wampas disable their prey, drag it off to their lair, and suspend it from the ceiling. They prefer fresh meat, so their victims are often kept alive. Scientists believe that wampas are solitary predators. Yet, research and first-hand experience has shown that wampas can and will coordinate mass attacks. Further research has revealed the existence of a certain class of big game hunter which specializes in "sport hunting" wampas and other large predators. Wampa pelts or stuffed heads are prized trophies in the some circles of the hunting community. Also, wampa "souvenirs" and even clothing made of wampa fur have been known to fetch extremely high prices at trading posts.  Luke was attacked by one the night before the Battle of Hoth and cut it's arm off.  Luke thought it was dead but after returning to Hoth he found a Wampa with only one arm.

TAUNTAUNS

Tauntauns are large, bipedal herbivores. They are approximately 1.3 to 2 meters tall at the shoulder.  Tauntauns have thick, grey fur to protect themselves against the cold temperatures of Hoth. Tauntauns are easily domesticated and make for very good pack animals. Their first instinct is to flee, but they will fight if cornered or in defense of their young. Tauntauns have muscular hind legs that end in tridactyl feet with hooked claws and they also have large, curved horns which protrude from the sides of their heads. Unlike wampas, tauntauns travel in herds. They eat a peculiar form of fungus that lives just below the top of the snow and ice.  During the day, they search for spots where their claws can scrape away enough ice to get to food. At night, they seek caves and other cover and they huddle together for warmth and protection. If they are caught out alone in the open after dark, their thick fur will not protect them against the nighttime temperatures of Hoth. Many tauntauns die of starvation in the winter months due to scarcity of water and food caused by the increased thickness of the ice which covers the ground.

JAWAS

Jawas are wanderers on the planet of Tatooine.  They use Sand Crawlers to get around and Jawa Blasters to fight.  The Jawa in this picture is Het Nkik.

TUSKEN RAIDERS

Tusken Raiders or Sand People as they are known were the humanoid scavengers that attacked Luke, C-3P0, and R2-D2 on Tatooine.  Their favorite weapon is a Gaderffii or "gaffi" stick and ride Banthas.

WOMP RATS

Womp Rats are carnivorous, rodent-like creatures which are indigenous to Tatooine. The majority of their body is covered in fur and they are approximately 3 meters long from their nose to the tip of their tail. Womp Rats are very vicious and use their claws and teeth to bring down prey.  They inhabit the canyons of Tatooine in groups of varying sizes. Womp Rats were the favorite target of Luke Skywalker when he piloted his T-16.

WORRTS

Worrts are carnivorous creatures that inhabit the most remote wilderness areas of Tatooine. They are approximately .5 to 1.5 meters tall and are not very intelligent. They will attack anything which remotely appears edible. This includes metal, plants, and large rocks that appear similar to other creatures and they will also attack just about anything that passes in front of it or that it can approach without being attacked first. However, worrts are harmless to humans. They typically feed on insects, small rodents, and other various tiny creatures. They have also been known to harass larger creatures, especially if the creatures put up no resistance to the worrt's advances.
