This was the headline in UK newspapers last week...and in 1974.
Last week the new Miss Great Britain Universe, Nicki Lane, 20, revealed she was the single mother of a six-year old son and was promptly stripped of her title.
In 1974, the new Miss World, the UK’s Helen Morgan, also had to relinquish her title for being a single mom and named “the other woman” in a divorce case.
In the photo, Helen is enjoying a champagne victory breakfast on day one of what would be a four day reign as Miss World.
Helen represented the UK at Miss World, but Miss Universe fans will recognize Helen as Miss Wales in the 1974 Miss Universe Pageant, where she was first runner-up to Miss Universe 1974.
There is one difference between what happened last week and what happened twenty-five years ago. The organizers of Miss World, Eric and Julia Morley, knew Helen was a single mother and said their rules did not prevent an unwed mother from entering and winning Miss World.
However, once Helen won the Miss World title, the public uproar was too much. Helen resigned and was replaced by her first runner-up, South Africa’s Anneline Kriel.
