BACKGROUND

This series is about the mythical doctor Wah To, played by Lam Man Lung, who existed around the time of the formation of the Three Kingdoms and during the twilight of the Han Dynasty. Felix Wong plays Cao Cao, a powerful military commander who laid the foundations of the Wei Empire. Cao Cao is often depicted as the villain because he gained control of power by making Emperor Ling a puppet ruler. Cao Cao eventually dies of a brain tumor. Wan Yeung Ming plays the legendary war general Kwan Yu, often better known as Kwan Kwun. Kwan Yin is a general from the Shu Empire, which is led by Lau Bei. Ng Wing Mei plays doctor Wah To's first wife, Cheung Miu Sum. Chung Lai Kai plays Wah To's sister, Wah Yuk. The story is about a man with an extraordinary talent for healing, a compassion for all mankind, and respect for life. In his life he had one major goal, to heal all those effected by disease and cared little about fame and fortune. However in the end he discovered that there are some things which just can't be cured.

HISTORY

Wah To existed somewhere around 145 AD to 265 AD. The exact date of his birth and death are not known. Some historians note that Wah To was born in either 144 AD or 145 AD. Others say that Wah To lived from 190 AD to 265 AD. In this series Wah To was younger than Cao Cao. However Wah To died before Cao Cao. In history Cao Cao died in 220 AD. Thus if Wah To was born in 190 AD he lived for only 30 years. However if he was born in 145 AD he would have been 75 years of age. So there are some inconsistencies depending on his actual birth date.

However this series is based around the events before the formation of the Three Kingdoms of Wei (220 - 265), Shu (221 - 263) and Wu (222 - 280). This period was one of the most turbulent periods in Chinese history. Towards the end of the Han Dynasty ( 206 BC - 220 AD), China was plagued by corruption, floods, plagues, and the locust swarms which destroyed farmer's crops. The peasants began to be dissatisfied with the Han government, and in 184 AD Zhang Jiao led the "Yellow Scarves Rebellion". This small group of rebels began to grow with commoners joining in with the Rebellion. Han Emperor Ling then called on his warlords to assist him in quelling the rebellion. But the warlords began fighting each other over territory and power, until the formation of the three Kingdoms. War continued to rage between the three nations as they contended for supremacy. Sima Yan reunited China in 280 AD under the Jin Dynasty (265 - 420), when the Shu Empire was conquered by the Wei Empire in 263AD and then Wu in 280 AD.

Cao Cao (155 - 220) was appointed "Commandant of the Valiant Cavaliers", and ordered to suppress the Yellow Scarves rebellion in 184 AD. In 189 AD Cao Cao attempted to assassinate Dong Zhou, who seized power but failed. Due to his failure Cao Cao was forced to flee. Cao Cao is often regarded as the villain, because he slained his uncle and many others after lodging at his uncle's house. He was in a panic after failing to assassinate Dong Zhou and thought that his uncle wanted to kill him. Also after the defeat of Dong Zhou, Emperor Ling sought the protection of Cao Cao. But Cao Cao made the Emperor a puppet ruler and held power. Thus he was perceived to be no different than Dong Zhou. Finally Cao Cao caused the death of mythical doctor Wah To. Cao Cao was very suspicious and thought that Wah To wanted to kill him, when he suggested operating on his head as the method to cure his head pains. Wah To was locked up in prison where he died. Cao Cao established the foundations of the Wei Empire after defeating rival Yaun Shao in a decisive battle at Gaundu. At that time Kwan Yin served under him and defeated most of Yaun Shao's greatest generals, Yan Liang and Wen Chou. After this victory Cao Cao, pursued Lau Bei who had escaped to Jiang Xia. Being weary of Lau Bei's abilities, Cao Cao wanted to form an alliance with the Wu Empire. The Wu Empire decided to form an alliance with Lau Bei instead, however. Furious at being rejected, Cao Cao launched an attack to conquer the south by attempting to defeat both Lau Bei and Sin Kin. At the battle of Chibi, Cao Cao suffered the worst defeat of his life. If not for Kwan Yin, Cao Cao would have died. Cao Cao then returned to Xuchang, built up his forces and attacked Lau Bei once more at Hanzhong. He retreated back to Xuchang after realizing that Lau Bei would soon force him back. Upon his return to Xuchang Cao Cao suffered pains in his head and died in 220 AD.

In 184 AD Kwan Yin (162 - 219), Chang Fei (167 - 221), and Lau Bei (161 - 223), took an oath to swear brotherhood and formed their own forces to quell the Yellow Scarves Rebellion which ended with the death of Zhang Jiao. Kwan Yin was a strong fierce warrior who was the leader of the "Five Tiger" generals in the Shu Empire. Kwan Yin wanted to restore peace and order to the land and thus fought alongside men who shared the same vision. When Cao Cao attacked Lau Bei and Chang Fei, Kwan Yin left the city of Xuzchou where Lau Bei was the governor, to help his sworn brothers. With Kwan Yin gone, Cao Cao easily captured the city of Xuchou. After the defeat Kwan Yin felt ashamed for letting his sworn brothers down and thought about committing suicide if not for the persuasion of Zhang Liao, Cao Cao's general. In return for the safety of Lau Bei's wives, Kwan Yin promised to surrender to Cao Cao. Kwan Yin then helped Cao Cao fight off fierce rival, Yuan Shao but slaying great generals Yan Liang and Wen Chou. After repaying Cao Cao, Kwan Yin, decided to escort Lau Bei's wives and rejoin his sworn brothers. During this journey Kwan Yin killed many of Cho Cho's generals who refused to allow him to pass through the territories. During the battle at Chibi, great advisor Chi Kwok Leung (181 - 234) assigned Kwan Yin with the task of capturing Cao Cao. Kwan Yin was reminded of Cho Cho's kind treatment, and decided to set him free. Ashamed Kwan Yin wanted to commit suicide, but was given a second chance to redeem himself by conquering Xaingyang. Later when Kwan Yin was defending Jingzhou, he engaged in battle with Cho Cho's forces in the northern region. Sin Kin's forces from the Wu Empire captured Jingzhou in a surprise attack. Kwan Yin made an attempt to contact reinforcements, but was captured in an ambush. He refused to surrender and defect over to Sin Kin and was thus executed in 219 AD.

SERIES REVIEW

SUMMARY

Wah To sits in his prison cell, and begins writing. He reflects over his life and the events that led up to his imprisonment. He continues to about how he healed Kwan Yin during a battle and became famous for it. He then wrote about how he tried to help heal Wei ruler Cao Cao, of his head aliments. As he writes he spits out blood and dies. Because of Cao Cao's suspicion a large part of Wah To's medical knowledge became lost to China forever.

Many commoners travel in large groups to escape the war raging around them. Amongst the travelling group are Wah To and Kwan Yin. Wah To is a young man with an ambition of studying and practicing medicine. Unfortunately his farther refuses to allow him to learn or practice medicine. During the journey Wah To takes a medical transcript from his farther's bag. By doing this he was mistaken by Kwan Yin as the thief amongst the camp. The misunderstanding is soon cleared as the group shelter at a nearby village. At the village a young girl is accused of adultery and all of the doctors in the village are certain that she is pregnant, even Wah To's dad. Wah To takes the girl's pulse and disagree with his farther who refused to listen. After the girl left, Wah To's farther informs him not to interfere with matters regardless of whether he was right or wrong. Worried about the girl's safety, Wah To decides to go through town to find her. Later famous local doctor Cheung, proves that the girl is not pregnant. Wah To was amongst the crowd and was impressed by doctor Cheung's abilities. At once he wanted to become doctor Cheung's student so he could practice medicine.

Meanwhile Kwan Yin was with his ill friend, and wanted to help him. He sold his sword to generate enough money to hire a doctor to cure his friend. As Kwan Yin was wandering through town he stumbles across a con-artist, Ng Po, who wanted to cheat the commoners of money. At once Kwan Yin dealt with the con-artist. Both men were then captured to see the local magistrate. Ng Po was able to escape by bribing the magistrate. Kwan Yin decided to remain behind and was locked up to ensure the safety for his people, despite knowing that the official was corrupt. Once Kwan Yin thought that his people were safe he decided to break out of jail.

When Wah To discovers that doctor Cheung had positions open for a cook, he decided to apply for the job hoping that it would led to his acceptance as a medical student. Wah To was not a good cook however, and was the worst of the three applicants. He was told to leave by doctor Cheung's eldest daughter Cheung Miu Sum who was in charge of the hiring. Wah To attempted to persuade Cheung Miu Sum into allowing him to stay, by offering to work without being paid. Cheung Miu Sum wanted Wah To to leave and was becoming annoyed. Finally she decided to use force to drag Wah To out of the house. During the struggle, Wah To's piece of jade falls out onto the floor. Cheung Miu Sum picked it up and thought that it belonged to her. Wah To requested the piece of jade back and called her a thief. Finally Cheung Miu Sum reached into her pocket and pulled out an identical piece of jade. At once Wah To realized that Cheung Miu Sum was the girl with whom he would marry. Their marriage had been arranged by their parents since childhood. When Cheung Miu Sum discovered that Wah To would be her future husband was became very unhappy because she thought Wah To was useless. Wah To wold use this secret to blackmail, Cheung Miu Sum into allowing him to stay at doctor Cheung's house. Cheung Miu Sum agreed and gave him a job as a cleaner, but Wah To always wanted to learn medicine.

After escaping from jail, Kwan Yin, chased after the con-artist Ng Po, who ran into doctor Cheung's house. Wah To helped to cure Ng Po who was wounded and bloodied. Kwan Yin arrived shortly after and demanded Wah To to hand Ng Po over. Wah To refused because he had just saved Ng Po's life and did not want to hand him over to someone who would kill him. Finally when Wah To heard that Kwan Yin had a friend who was ill, he agreed to help cure him. Kwan Yin was pleased with Wah To's kindness and left them. Meanwhile Ng Po, had stolen valuables from doctor Cheung's house and had disappeared. Cheung Miu Sum then blamed Wah To for being too kind of a person. Later Wah To was caught listening in on doctor Cheung making a prescription to a patient. Doctor Cheung was less then impressed by Wah To and demanded an explanation. Wah To then revealed that he wanted to become a student and learn from doctor Cheung. Doctor Cheung refused at first until his daughter Cheung Miu Sum persuaded him to give Wah To a fair go. Doctor Cheung then devised three tests which Wah to needed to pass before being accepted as a student. Wah To passed all of the tests and was accepted as a student. It was then that doctor Cheung realized that Wah To was his future son in law.

However Wah To's farther still refused to allow Wah To to practice medicine. Later Wah To discovered that his farther was once a top medical professor who served the Han Emperor. One time the Emperor’s wife fell ill to a rare disease. The royal doctor Lee Mun and doctor Wah were summoned to the palace to present ideas on how to cure the disease. Doctor Wah beat Lee Mun and placed with the task of healing the Emperor’s wife. Unfortunately the Emperor’s wife committed suicide whilst doctor Wah was attempting to heal her. Lee Mun used this opportunity to get even with doctor Wah and persuaded the Emperor into thinking that doctor Wah had caused the death of his wife. Doctor Wah was then sentenced to be executed, but was saved by military commander Cao Cao, who requested the Emperor to spare his life. Cao Cao sighted doctor Wah's ability to heal others as the major reason in keeping him alive. Doctor Wah was then sentenced to suffer 30 hits before being released. Cao Cao helped doctor Wah back onto his feet and later formed a top medical school in Xuchang. This was the major reason that doctor Wah did not want Wah To to study medicine. Doctor Wah knew that his son was too kind hearted of a person and could one day make a big mistake like he did. Wah To reassured his farther that he knew what he was doing, and was finally allowed to practice medicine under doctor Cheung.

Soon the village became troubled by a mysterious plague. Wah To went to cure Kwan Yin's ill friend and noticed something odd about the illness. He later discovered that it was a plague, and informed doctor Cheung who wanted nothing to do with it. Later excellency Wong arrived and requested to know the cause of the mystery illness from doctor Cheung, who assured him that nothing was wrong. Wah To knew it was the plague and informed excellency Wong. Doctor Cheung then informed excellency Wong that Wah To was attempting to cause trouble. Wah To was then subsequently locked up. Cheung Miu Sum then pretended to be ill with the mystery illness to test her farther. She discovered that Wah To had been right about the plague, but doctor Cheung had no idea of how to cure it and thus wanted to keep it a secret. Upon discovering the truth Cheung Miu Sum decided to bail Wah To out of jail. Immediately Wah To sought to find a cure to the plague, and sought the assistance of con-artist Ng Po. At first Ng Po refused, but decided to help Wah To, in order to hide from Kwan Yin who was pursuing him.

Soon Excellency Wong's farther also fell ill to the mysterious plague. Doctor Cheung promised heal Excellency Wong's farther within four days, because he thought Wah To had come up with a cure. Meanwhile Excellency Wong attempted to stop the plague by dragging sick people of the streets and attempted to burn them at an old house. Kwan Yin's friend and Ng Po were amongst them, and Kwan Yin arrived to rescue all of the people. Kwan Yin was then informed by Ng Po, that Wah To had an idea on how to cure the plague. All of the sick decided to follow Kwan Yin to see Wah To, and his farther doctor Wah. Wah To needed to locate a rare flower at the top of the mountains to make the cure. But finding it was difficult and dangerous. Kwan Yin was a man who feared nothing so he decided to help Wah To. At the mountain Wah To found the flower he needed and nearly fell to his death had it not been for Kwan Yin, who used his strength to save him. Whilst Wah To was collecting the flower and making the cure, Excellency Wong's farther died through the plague. At once doctor Cheung attempted to escape, but he ran into Ng Po on the streets. Ng Po thought of a money making idea, which would save doctor Cheung face and make the commoners distrust Wah To. Ng Po created a cult sect and claimed that all loyal followers would be protected by a spirit, and is immune to all diseases and plagues. At once all of the commoners left Wah To's house and joined Ng Po's cult. All followers were required to give money to a clay statue created by Ng Po.

Once Wah To created the cure he was stunned that the villagers would rather believe in a false god then be cured by his medicine. Wah To was outraged and attempted to destroy Ng Po's altar, but Kwan Yin prevented him. Kwan Yin used his experience in war to come up with a plan to expose Ng Po. One night Kwan Yin captured Ng Po and placed him along with the sick people. Wah To injected him with something which made it looked as if he had been infected by the plague as well. When Ng Po discovered strange spots on his body he immediately sought the help of Wah To to cure him. Wah To promised on the condition that he reveal the truth behind the cult sect to all of the commoners. After that event all of the commoners decided to be healed by Wah To. Doctor Cheung was disgraced because his student Wah To was a better doctor than him. Doctor To was outraged and decided to head to the capital of Xuchang. Doctor Wah also took his family to Xuchang because Wah To wanted to attend the top medical school established by Cao Cao. Ng Po traveled with the Wah family as a helper because only Wah To was kind enough trust him and give him a second chance. Before leaving the village, Wah To, wanted to say goodbye to Cheung Miu Sum because at that time he did not know were she was going. But doctor Cheung did not allow Wah To to see his daughter.

In the morning Wah To went to doctor Cheung's house but they had already gone. Kwan Yin went in another direction after sending the Wah family on their way. Kwan Yin wanted to restore peace and order to the land, so he went to join the army. Wah To was surprised when he bumped into the Cheung family on the road towards, Xuchang. He immediately ran over to see her, but doctor Cheung was still angry. When they got into Xuchang, the Cheung family went along to live with a rich man called Mr. Ng. The Wah family settled down at an old house with a low rent rate. At once Mr. Ng fell in love with Cheung Miu Sum, who rejected his love. Wah To was the only one she loved and she made that clear by spending more time with him. Wah To then spent many nights and days in his room to write a love letter to Cheung Miu Sum. Knowing that her farther would disapprove of their marriage Cheung Miu Sum convinced Wah To to make up with her farther and work under him for at least three years. Cheung Miu Sum thought that way, Wah To would be able to learn from her farther, attend the top medical school, take over the Cheung family medical shop and marry her. Wah To agreed because he loved Cheung Miu Sum and thought that it was the best way of going about marrying her also.

In the years that followed, Cao Cao made Emperor Ling a puppet ruler and took control of power. Kwan Yin, Chang Fei and Lau Bei took an oath of brotherhood, formed their own forces and would later establish the Shu Empire. Wah To's farther had passed away leaving Wah To with the main responsibility to take care of his family. Also in that time doctor Cheung, did not give any patients for Wah To to look after. Instead Wah To spent much of his time doing cleaning and sweeping duties. The Wah family attempted to persuade Wah To to stop working under doctor Cheung, but Wah To refused because he loved Cheung Miu Sum. One day Wah To wandered pass the top medical school and decided to take a look inside. He was impress by what he saw, which made him more eager to attend the school. Suddenly Cao Cao arrived with Emperor Ling, to visit the school. Cao Cao was proud of the school he established. He informed the Emperor that with his medical school, the nation would be cured of all disease and plagues. From behind the door Wah To saw something strange about Cao Cao. His face was looking a bit pale, and Wah To stumbled in to take a closer look. At once he was seized upon by one of Cho Cho's men. Emperor Ling was frighten and rushed to stand behind Cao Cao, thinking that it was an assassin.

Cao Cao looked at Wah To, and realized that he was not an assassin. Cao Cao decided to set Wah To free upon being informed that he was a doctor. Cao Cao was a great warlord, with excellent capabilities, but was being held back by a mysterious head aliments. He had ambitions of becoming ruler of all of China, but knew that he needed to be cured in order to achieve his goals. The sole purpose of establishing the top medical school at Xuchang, and recruiting the best medical talent was to cure his head aliments. Cao Cao hoped that one day through his medical school a doctor could come up with a cure for his head aliments. So far no one has been able to come up with a cure. One evening Cao Cao has a nightmare that he was slained by Kwan Yin on the battlefield. He woke up in a wild and crazy, and requested to see his doctor. He demanded the doctor to cure his head aliments, but the doctor could not come up with the cure. At once Cao Cao went outraged and reached for his sword and attempted to kill the doctor. His generals attempted to restrain him until his head aliments made him stop. In the morning the doctor attempted to escape from Xuchang. When Cao Cao woke up and realized what had happened he chased after the doctor and demanded him to return. Cao Cao used his head aliments as an excuse for his actions of intending to kill the doctor and requested the doctor to remain in Xuchang. The doctor was too scared of Cao Cao however and decided to leave.

Wah To was on the streets and thought that Cao Cao was being honest and sincere to the doctor. He approached Cao Cao and asked him about his head aliments. Wah To informed that he could cure the problem. Cao Cao instantly became interested and was about to reveal the problem when doctor Cheung arrived. Doctor Cheung was jealous of Wah To's abilities and did not want Wah To to become better than him. So he informed Cao Cao that Wah To was his laborer and not a doctor at all. At once Cao Cao looked at Wah To in disgust and wandered away. At once Wah To became angry at doctor Cheung and decided to quit his job. He knew that doctor Cheung would never allow him to go to Cho Cho's top medical school. Infact doctor Cheung had wasted his time and never taught him anything. Now without a job and needing to support his family, Wah To decided to open his own medical school. Cheung Miu Sum agreed to help him obtain the necessary finance to open the school. Wah To's family would help out at the store. Cheung Miu Sum decided to lend money from Mr. Ng for Wah To to open the school. Mr. Ng agreed to help because he was in love with Cheung Lan Sum, Cheung Miu Sum's sister.

However within days of opening the store, Wah To's reputation was ruined. He was too kind hearted and agreed to cure someone who was certain die. The man did infact die under Wah To's care, and despite knowing that the man would die, the wife blamed Wah To for her husband’s death. She sat infront of the store screaming and yelling at Wah To. Despite being accused of murder and being shouted at, Wah To, decided to give some money to the lady so she could bury her husband. Cheung Miu Sum, could not believe that Wah To would do something which was so stupid. Cheung Miu Sum then looked at the day's profit, but the tin was empty. She looked at Ah Orr, Ng Po and Wah Yuk and demanded an answer. She was then informed that Wah To had given the money away to the poor people so they could help themselves. She took a look at the medicine shelf and found that they were running short of medical supplies. Wah To had given the medicine to the people who could not pay for it. At once Cheung Miu Sum became angry and attempted to speak sense into Wah To, but he did not understand. He only wanted to heal people and did not understand anything to do with wealth and money. At once Cheung Miu Sum knew she was in trouble. Mr. Ng had approached her about returning the money she owed. Cheung Miu Sum made a promise to have the money returned. When doctor Cheung discovered that Wah To had no money, he decided to take Mr. Ng, over and demand the money back. Wah To was given three weeks to come up with the money or Mr. Ng would close down his shop.

Meanwhile business was down and Wah To had no patient to see. Wah To decided to leave the store and find patience to heal. As he was gone, the foster daughter of Cao Cao, Lan Ting arrived with Cho Cho's third son, Cho Chung. Wah To's students Ah Orr and Ng Po did not know who they were and Ng Po tried to con them of some money. Lan Ting was on to Ng Po, and decided to leave. Ng Po's actions, wrecked Wah To's reputation, because Lan Ting thought if the student was a con-artist, so must the masters. When Lan Ting did see Wah To healing a patient she went over and warned the patient to be careful of being con of money. At once Wah To was upset and asked the girl why she called him a con-artist. Lan Ting refused to explain and left with Cho Chung. Wah To picked up his medical bag and followed them. Along the river, someone had challenged the Wei Empire to be able to guess the weight of an elephant. The Wei Empire would loose face if they could not resolve the problem. Finally Cho Chung came up with the idea of using the elephants weight to displace water trick and used rocks to measure the weight of the elephant. After resolving the problem Cho Chung and Lan Ting disappeared so Wah To went back to the store.

When Cao Cao discovered that his son was the one who resolved the problem he was pleased. He knew his son was extremely clever and loved him the most. Infact he knew his son could command an army if only he didn't have a heart aliment. Cao Cao has been wanting to find a doctor who could heal his son for many years but found none. Even the royal doctor Lee Mun had no idea. Meanwhile doctor Cheung's family continues to try and separate Wah To and Cheung Miu Sum. First the Cheung family knowing that Wah To was good natured, set him up at the prostitute parlor. Cheung Miu Sum was then informed that Wah To was drinking and having a good time at the parlor. She went to see for herself, and indeed Wah To was being dragged out drunk. Doctor Cheung and Mr. Ng then closed down Wah To's shop so he had no way of obtaining a good income to provide for a family. The days that followed Wah To attempted to explain himself but he was prevented from doing so because Cheung Miu Sum had been locked up in her room. The Cheung family had arranged Cheung Miu Sum to marry into a rich family. When Wah To heard about the arranged marriage he snuck into the Cheung family house and rescued Cheung Miu Sum. Doctor Cheung caught them and refused to allow his daughter to leave unless she ended her farther-daughter relationship. Cheung Miu Sum loved Wah To deeply and decided to end the relationship.

Wah To and Cheung Miu Sum then got married at the Wah family house, with only the Wah family present. On their wedding night it rained so that got onto the bed to prevent it from getting wet. The weeks that followed, Wah To had set up a street store and continued to see patients with help from Ng Po and Ah Orr. His sister Wah Yuk would find work as a waiter. The family barely got buy however, and Cheung Miu Sum received some money from her mother. But every time Cheung Miu Sum's mother helped the Wah family, doctor Cheung would return to take back the money and insult Wah To for being useless. Finally Wah To made up his mind that he wanted to get into the top medical school. They went to see the local excellency to request a letter of recommendation. But the excellency was corrupt and required a donation of something wealthy. Cheung Miu Sum promised that she would come up with what was required, but Wah To refused and insulted the excellency. Wah To could not believe that talent alone could not get him into medical school instead he had to buy into it.

Meanwhile Cho Cho's son, Cho Chung was ill once more and royal doctor Lee Mun could not cure it. Cao Cao had been up all night worried about his son, and was in hurry when Wah To stopped him on the streets. Wah To wanted to inform Cao Cao about the corrupt excellency. Cao Cao did not want to listen, and Wah To was beaten up by his generals for getting in the way. Soon Cho Chung's illness got worst and worst. Finally taking advice from Lan Ting, Cao Cao opened a medical forum at his school, inviting doctors from all over China to attend it. The forum was opened in the name of locating the cause behind Cho Chung's illness and then cure it. As Wah To was walking home, he was stopped by Kwan Yin who had snuck into Xuchang. Kwan Yin's troops were engaging in battle with Cao Cao, but Kwan Yin was worried about Wah To and went to see him. Kwan Yin then offered Wah To a position as a doctor with the Shu Empire governed by Lau Bei. Wah To refused stating that his only ambition is to attend the medical school in Xuchang, and did not want to get involved in political issues. Seeing that his friend was content with life, Kwan Yin left and returned back to his Shu army. When Wah To heard that Cao Cao was opening a medical forum he immediately set out to find a cure. He heard a story about an old man in a small rural village who shared a similar problem as Cho Chung. Wah To thought that the old man might provide clues and went on a journey to find him.

At the same time Cho Chung and Lan Ting also went on a journey. By chance Wah To would run into Lan Ting. The misunderstanding is further deepened because when they met Wah To was running away from a local fisherman who was calling him a con-artist. Lan Ting was less then impressed with Wah To, when she discovered that Wah To had taken them on a wild goose chase. Wah To promised to take Lan Ting and Cho Chung, to a spiritual and scenic spot in China, but they ended up at a small village. Whilst attempting to locate the old man, Lan Ting and Cho Chung fell into a tunnel underground. Wah To jumped into the tunnel to help them as the locals went to obtain help. Inside the tunnel was the body of the old man, Wah To had been looking for. Wah To obtained some clues from the body but did not understand fully the nature of the illness. The locals the arrived and managed to lift Wah To and Cho Chung out from the tunnel. But as Lan Ting was being lifted the tunnel collapsed. The locals and Wah To managed to dig Lan Ting out but she had stopped breathing. Wah To still managed to revive Lan Ting however, and thus he obtained the nickname of, "Medicine God" with the ability to restore life to those dead. Lan Ting was now impressed by Wah To's healing powers. As they journeyed back into Xuchang, Wah To apologized for taking Lan Ting on wild goose chase and explain his purpose of visiting the village.

When Lan Ting discovered that Wah To's purpose of wandering to the small village was to heal Cho Chung she was impressed. She then asked whether Wah To knew who Cho Chung was. Wah To replied no, but replied that saving lives was a doctor's sole purpose. He then informed Lan Ting that he had an ambition of attending the medical school set up by Cao Cao. Before leaving with Cho Chung, Lan Ting informed Wah To that he would have the opportunity to attend the medicine forum opened by Cao Cao and wished him luck with finding the nature of the problem. Whilst Wah To was gone, Cheung Miu Sum decided to work at the prostitute parlor to generate enough money to get Wah To a letter of recommendation for Wah To to attend the medical school from the local excellency. She achieved her goal, but Mr. Ng spotted her at the prostitute parlor. When Wah To returned, Cheung Miu Sum, persuaded him to attend doctor Cheung's birthday. At doctor Cheung's place everything was revealed, and Wah To was insulted once more before being asked to leave. Doctor Cheung also reminded Cheung Miu Sum that she had no connection with the family and to stop trying to bring utter shame upon them.

Wah To and Cheung Miu Sum stayed however so that Cheung Miu Sum can speak with her mother and ask for forgiveness. Doctor Cheung allowed them to stay not wanting to loose face at his party, but asked them to go to the kitchen. Later doctor Cheung was visited by royal doctor Lee Mun. Everyone at the party thought that Cao Cao had wanted to invite doctor Cheung to the medical forum. But is was a misunderstanding, Cao Cao had sent an invite to be personally handed to Wah To. When Lee Mun heard that Wah To had nothing to do with the Cheung family he made a move to leave. Suddenly doctor Cheung stopped him, and said that Wah To was his son in law. Doctor Cheung then rushed into the kitchen and invited Cheung Miu Sum and Wah To into the dinning room where Lee Mun handed the invitation to Wah To and left. Lee Mun looked at Wah To and could not believe that he was sent personally to hand a fool an invitation. When Wah To arrived at the medicine forum, he was shocked to discover that the girl and young boy he had traveled with were Cho Cho's foster daughter Lan Ting and son Cho Chung.

At the medicine forum, Wah To, located the nature of the illness. Everyone doctor thought that Cho Chung was suffering from a blood related illness. Wah To cut open the body of the old man he found who had a similar problem and pointed to the hole in the heart as the major cause of Cho Chung's problem. However Wah To informed Cao Cao that although he knew the cause, he would need some time to figure out the way to heal Cho Chung. Cao Cao clapped his hands and was impress and allowed Wah To, time to come up with a method to heal his son. Cao Cao then asked Wah To what rewards he wanted for his efforts. Wah to replied that he only wanted to save Cho Chung's life because it was a doctor's duty, and that he did not do it for material gains. Cao Cao stroked his beard, and looked little suspicious at Wah To's intentions. Cao Cao finally remarked whether Wah To wanted anything else. Wah To then informed Cao Cao that he had always wanted to attend the top medical school. Cao Cao replied that he Wah To would be allowed to attend the school. It was then revealed by Cao Cao, that it was Lan Ting who convinced him to send him an invitation to the forum. Lee Mun meanwhile was becoming worried that Wah To might take his position as the royal doctor.

Suddenly everyone in Xuchang turned up at Wah To's medical shop offering him gifts and asking for his advice to cure all types of ills and pains. Business was again booming. But Wah To was disappointed in all of them, because he always had the ability to heal people. He knew they came not because of his healing abilities but because of his name and reputation obtained through the medical forum. However he was now a student at the top medical school and did not have time to look at patient. Finally he decided that his students Ah Orr and Ng Po would look after the shop along with Wah Yuk. At the medicine school, Wah To, discovered that the sons of rich people were given special treatment over those sons from poor people. This did not please Wah To and he wandered which side he would be placed. To his surprise, Cao Cao, had given him a big room at the school and he was treated the same as the son of a rich family. Lan Ting would visit him everyday to help him figure out ways to heal Cho Chung. Lee Mun was also working on a method as well, but his idea was based on an artificial solution. Wah To meanwhile searched for a natural method. Wah To spent so much time at the medical school doing research that he started to neglect Cheung Miu Sum. Suddenly Wah to came up with several ideas. He would use pig skin, to patch up the hole. He would operate on Cho Chung and use Ma Fu Tong to relieve the pain during the operation.

Unfortunately the flower that was needed to create Ma Fu Tong was found on the territories governed by the Shu Empire. Regardless of the situation, Lan Ting and Wah To crossed the border to fetch the flower. Whilst picking the flowers Wah To and Lan Ting were captured by a cult sect but were later saved by Kwan Yin who was patrolling through the area. Kwan Yin took them back to his army camp were they would stay until the end of the war. There was a spy in Kwan Yin's camp who sent a message back to Lee Mun. When Cao Cao returned from war and discovered that Wah To was in Kwan Yin's camp he ordered the capture of all of Wah To's friends and relatives. In the meantime doctor Cheung used methods into getting back in the good books with Cheung Miu Sum. Having achieved his goal, and becoming recognized as Cheung Miu Sum's farther once more, he was shocked when Cho Cho's generals arrested the entire Cheung family along with Mr. Ng. At once doctor Cheung protested, stating that he had nothing to do with the Wah family and that he ended the farther-daughter relationship with Cheung Miu Sum long ago. Mr. Ng was allowed to leave by Lee Mun but the rest were locked up. Doctor Cheung then blamed Cheung Miu Sum for the current predicament. When Wah To discovers that his family was being held captive by Cao Cao he demanded Kwan Yin to allow him to leave. Kwan Yin was placed in a difficult position because Wah to had done much to help his camp by healing all the wounded soldiers. But according to the rules of war, his generals would not allow them to leave.

Finally in the evening Lan Ting stole Kwan Yin's seal and wrote a letter which allowed them through the army barriers. Kwan Yin's son located the spy amongst the camp and suspected that Wah To and Lan Ting were helping the spy. So when Lan Ting and Wah To got passed the barrier they were surprised to see Kwan Yin who demanded they return to camp. Kwan Yin's general could not find any evidence that Lan Ting and Wah To were collaborating with the spy. Finally without evidence, Lan Ting, played on Kwan Yin's heroic and honorable personality and convinced Kwan Yin to allow them to leave. When Wah To returned to Xuchang he discovered that his family were to be executed that day. He immediately rushed to see Cao Cao. As he arrived Lee Mun was getting prepared to heal Cho Chung with lead. Wah To stopped him and pointed out that the method would cause Cho Chung's death later on as the lead gets into the blood stream. With this information Cao Cao got angry at Lee Mun, but Cao Cao was still not impressed with Wah To and ordered him to be taken to execution. Wah To then pleaded with Cao Cao to allow him an opportunity to heal Cho Chung. When Cao Cao heard that Wah To was confident that he could heal Cho Chung, he allowed Wah To three hours to complete the operation. Cao Cao then sent a messenger to delay the execution of Wah To's family by three hours.

In that three hours Wah To prepared the Ma Fu Tong, operated on Cho Chung and patched up the hole with pig meat. Wah To then stitched up Cho Chung and waited for the effects of the Ma Fu Tong to wear off. They waited and waited. Soon Cao Cao was getting worried. Wah To then realized what had happened and went to prepare some noodles. He placed the plate of noodles infront of Cho Chung's nose and he woke up to the scent of the noodles. Wah To pointed out that the effects of the Ma Fu Tong had already worn off but Cho Chung had fallen asleep during that period of time. Cao Cao was delighted that Wah To had saved the life of his son and ordered the release of the Wah family and friends. Cao Cao was not pleased with Lee Mun however and ordered to have him executed. Wah To stepped in requested Cao Cao to allow Lee Mun to live. Cao Cao agreed, but demoted Lee Mun's position. The following day Wah To was summoned to see Cao Cao, who wanted to reward him with gold and silver. Wah To did not accept the reward stating that saving lives is a doctor's duty. Wah to stated that he only wanted to remain at the medical school, so Cao Cao made Wah To the new royal doctor, responsible for the top medical school. Wah To then wanted to have the opportunity to heal Cao Cao's head aliments. Cao Cao did not trust Wah To completely however and stated that he does not have any problems with head aliments.

When Wah To found out his new role at the medical school, he decided to change the rules and gave equal opportunity to all doctors regardless of whether they are from a rich or poor family. Lee Mun was not at all pleased with Wah To and waited for his opportunity to get even. Upon returning to his family Wah To was shocked to discover that everyone was waiting find out the amount of financial rewards he had received. He informed them that he did not take any, they all became disappointed. Meanwhile Wah Yuk had fallen in love with Ng Po, who was trying to set her up with Ah Orr. Ng Po knew that Wah Yuk, loved him only but did not want to hurt his good friend Ah Orr so he decided to keep things a secret. Eventually the whole Wah family found out and allowed them to continue with their relationship. Meanwhile Cao Cao was engaging in battle with Lau Bei and Sin Kin's combined forces. He is stressed out and one night has a nightmare where he is slained in battle by Kwan Yin. When he wakes up he goes wild and crazy. Wah To and Lee Mun arrive to lend him assistance. This time he refused to listen to Wah To and went to get his head temporary relieved by Lee Mun. Wah To did not let up however and went to see Cao Cao the following day. Cao Cao was planning to deal with Sin Kin's boast that he would attack with forces in five directions. Wah To interrupted Cao Cao and made him angry. Cao Cao reached for his sword and attempted to kill Wah to until his head aliments returned.

Wah To then injected Cao Cao with a drug which allowed him to sleep for one whole day and one whole night. Cho Cho's general used their own plans to deal with Sin Kin without Cho Cho's orders. When Cao Cao woke up he was angry, until he discovered that he had won the war against Sin Kin and drove them back to the Wu Empire. Apparently Sin Kin knew that Cao Cao was ill so he tried to upset Cao Cao, so he would fall even more ill and waited for the opportunity to attack. When Cao Cao realized this he ordered someone to send a fake message to Sin Kin, stating that he had fallen extremely ill. Cao Cao then led the army personally and attacked Sin Kin. After the war was over, Wah To, was summoned to sit by Cho Cho's side as they went to see the Emperor Ling to celebrate the victory. At the celebration, Cho Cho's generals suggested to the Emperor that it was about time that Cao Cao be named a Lord a given his own lands to rule. Emperor Ling was saved face when Cao Cao stood up and informed his generals that the issue should be discussed later. Emperor Ling then organized a party for the next three days to celebrate the victory. Wah To was invited and his family all wanted to go along. Wah To was not really interested in attending, but decided to go anyway. Wah To was disappointed when Cheung Miu Sum, changed her hair style to attend the party.

At the party Wah To went his own way and looked after the health of Cao Cao. Meanwhile Cheung Miu Sum and her sisters attended the party with Mr. Ng. At the party the rich wives were very snobby and laughed at Cheung Miu Sum. She was made to look bad in public at the royal palace. When Wah To arrived to collect her Cheung Miu Sum was very upset. She had always wanted to live in a big house and live an easy life. She wanted to gain respect from noble rich families and be like them. Wah To on the other hand did not know what all the fuss was about. Cao Cao visited Wah To the following day to ask about the Dao exercise which could help him keep fit. Wah To was surprised by the visit and Cheung Miu Sum was embarrassed at the state of the old house. It was not suited for such visits from a noble person like Cao Cao, who seemed not to mind. Outside Cheung Miu Sum used a surgery chair for Cao Cao to sit on. As Cao Cao went outside he looked at the old house and was surprised that Wah To was able to live at the house for so long. When Cao Cao sat down on the chair, it gave him a strange feeling. As he leaned into the chair he felt relaxed and comfortable. Cao Cao liked the chair and enquired about its name. Ng Po quickly came up with the name, Ching Long chair, to please Cao Cao further. As he watched Wah To perform the steps to the Dao exercise he nearly fell asleep. The moves were far too slow for Cao Cao who didn't have time on his hands. Cao Cao stood up and informed Wah To that he had important business to take care off. He informed Wah To that he would visit again the following day and to save the Ching Long chair for him.

The following day officials arrived and declared the Wah family house unsuitable to live in. The official then asked the Wah family to follow him. Cheung Miu Sum thought that they were being arrested. Finally the official took the Wah family to one of the biggest houses in Xuchang and asked whether they liked it. Cheung Miu Sum replied that she had always dreamt of living in a big house. The official was pleased and informed them that the house was a gift from Cao Cao. Soon the wives of the other officials arrived to look at the house. When they saw the Wah family they laughed because they thought that they were the servants at the house. They were soon shocked to discover that the house was owned by Wah To. Later Cao Cao arrived with Wah To and looked at the house. Wah To didn't really mind were he lived as long as he was still able to heal people. After completing the formalities Cao Cao asked Cheung Miu Sum, where the Ching Long chair was. Cao Cao was then informed that the chair had been broken when they ran into one of the official’s snobby wives. Cao Cao got angry but settled down upon the request of Cheung Miu Sum.

Days later Cao Cao left for war, and requested that Wah To follow him to look after his health. Wah To agreed to follow him to war along with Lan Ting. Many soldiers were injured and wounded as a result of the war. Wah To did his best to heal those injured but they were to many. Cao Cao arrived and looked at the camp. He thanked Wah To for his efforts. When Cao Cao heard that Kwan Yin was preparing to attack the camp, Cao Cao ordered everyone back onto the battlefield. He then requested Wah To to use Ma Fu Tong on the soldiers so they would fight harder by not being able to feel the pain. Wah To refused to do such a thing and asked Cao Cao to stop the battle. Cao Cao took this opportunity to rally the morale of his troops by stating that he was going to war not for his own sake but for the sake of the people. They went to battle, lost and retreated back to Xuchang. In the opposite camp Kwan Yin refused to allow wounded soldiers back to the battlefield. Instead Kwan Yin sent for a doctor to heal all his wounded soldiers. Kwan Yin looked at the heavens and wished that Wah to was in his camp.

Whilst Wah To was gone, Cheung Miu Sum and the others were enjoying the company of other rich noble families by attending party after party. Upon his return no one wanted to listen to the hardships he had experienced on the battlefield. Wah To felt that he and Cheung Miu Sum were becoming further and further apart from each other. One time Cao Cao had another nightmare that he was slained by Kwan Yin, and his head aliments returned. Cao Cao immediately sent for Wah To, who was busy healing another patient. Wah To decided to send one of his students over to see Cao Cao, who was less than impress with the fact that Wah To treated his life as equal to the life of a commoner. Eventually Wah To did arrive and eased Cao Cao head aliments. But Cho Cho's generals were extremely upset with Wah To. From that day forth Cao Cao attempted to restrict Wah To's ability to heal others by ordering him to stay within the top medical school and to concentrate matters at the school. Cao Cao also took Wah To to see the Emperor Ling who was doing nothing but playing around with one of his wife. Cao Cao then went on to inform Wah To that his health critical to the survival of the Wei Empire. Without him healthy millions of common people would die at the hands of either Sin Kin from Wu or Lau Bei from Shu. Cao Cao then instructed Wah To that he must do everything in his power to help cure his head aliments.

Later Lee Mun came up with the idea of creating a poison with no odour and no color to poison the opposition forces as a way for Cao Cao to gain control of all of China. But in order to be effective, Lee Mun, pointed to the fact that Wah To was required to create the poison. At once Cao Cao was taken by this idea, and attempted to persuade Wah To to generate the poison. Wah To refused on the grounds that a doctor's duty is to save lives, not take them. Cao Cao was extremely upset by Wah To's comments, and would have had him executed had it not been for Lan Ting. She came up with a delay tactic and convinced Wah To to temporary promise Cao Cao that he would create the poison. This gave them time to think of an idea to escape from the Wei Empire over to the Shu Empire. Cao Cao was on to them an captured Wah To's friends like Ng Po, Ah Orr, and Mr. Ng and placed them in his army in a war against Kwan Yin. Cao Cao hoped this would force Wah To to create the poison. Instead Wah To and Lan Ting went to see Kwan Yin to prevent the war from taking place. Kwan Yin promised to help by refusing to let his daughter marry Sin Kin's son, because he did not like Sin Kin in the first place. With no war to fight Wah To's friends were set free.

Soon Cheung Miu Sum got a little bit suspicious with Wah To, who was returning home late at night and gone early in the morning. She found another girl's hairpin on her bed and suspected that Wah To was having an affair with Lan Ting. Her suspicions led to a misunderstanding which came to the notice of Cao Cao. One night Wah To was teaching Lan Ting the Dao exercise when Cheung Miu Sum arrived and mistakenly thought that they were having an affair. When Cao Cao heard of the news he spoke with Lan Ting and discovered that Lan Ting did have feelings for Wah To. Cao Cao then attempted to kill two birds with one stone. He hoped that by making Wah To into his son in law, he would be persuaded into creating the cure. At once Cao Cao sent wedding gifts over to the Wah family and personally went over to arranged the marriage. Despite the protests of Cheung Miu Sum the marriage went ahead. Lan Ting married into the Wah family so she could protect Wah To against Cho Cho's plans. Lan Ting anticipated correctly because soon after the marriage Cao Cao wanted to promote Wah To to general. Wah To did not know how to fight and Cao Cao thought that if Wah To was made a general he would be forced to create the poison to save his own life in battle. Lan Ting then came up with the idea of embarrassing Wah To in public. Many of Wah To's future generals saw him and thought that he was a man with little courage. When they discovered that they would have to subordinate to Wah To in war they rejected the idea. This pleased Wah To, but upsets Cao Cao who began planning his next move.

As the weeks passed Wah To and Lan Ting made contact with Kwan Yin and made preparations to leave. Cao Cao anticipated the move and sent spies to watch the Wah and Cheung families. Finally Wah To approached Cao Cao about going home to pay respects to his farther at his home town. Cao Cao was suspicious and gave ten days for Wah To to create the poison before allowing him to leave. Cao Cao also made the threat that if the poison was not created in 10 days his family would die. Wah To agreed but delayed things to buy time for his family to escape. Lan Ting took the group out of Xuchang and waited along the river for Wah To to return. When the Cheung family found out what was going on they were less than impressed. They were content with living a wealthy life and did not want to leave. Finally Wah To tricked Cao Cao into thinking that he had created the poison and left. He met up with Lan Ting by the river and prepared to board the boat and leave. But Cheung Miu Sum refused to leave because she was upset that Wah To did not inform her about leaving. As they argued Kwan Yin and his generals arrived to see why they hadn't boarded the boat. Suddenly Cao Cao arrived with his generals to capture Wah To after realizing that he had been tricked. As the others boarded the boat, Cheung Miu Sum still refused to leave. This led to the capture of Lan Ting who protected Wah To and allowed him to escape. Finally Kwan Yin charged at the soldiers pursuing them and allowed Wah To and Cheung Miu Sum to board the boat.

Kwan Yin returned to the boat and took then back to his camp. At the camp the Cheung family were being ungrateful to Kwan Yin who had rescued them. All they worried about was blaming Wah To for taking away from the big house and wealthy life. Wah To did not listen to their complaints however. His mind was on rescuing Lan Ting, who had sacrificed much to save him. The days that followed Wah To would spend the majority of his time looking after wounded soldiers. Cheung Miu Sum arrived to provide assistance but Wah To was in no mood to speak with her. Although he loved Cheung Miu Sum, he partly blamed her for the capture of Lan Ting. Meanwhile Cao Cao locked Lan Ting up in a cell, and sent one of his generals, Chung Yun, to attack Kwan Yin to recapture Wah To. Cho Cho's head aliments were getting worst and he needed Wah To to heal it. The following day Kwan Yin engaged in battle with Chung Yan. Kwan Yin fell into a trap and was hit by a poison arrow. Kwan Yin returned to camp and sought Wah To's help to cure him. Wah To agreed, and suggested that Kwan Yin take some Ma Fu Tong to ease the pain whilst he operated. Kwan Yin refused because he knew Chung Yan could attack any moment, and was operated on with ever taking Ma Fu Tong.

When Kwan Yin was healed he immediately rode back to battle and defeated Chung Yan. When Cao Cao was informed that Wah To had helped to heal Kwan Yin, he went mad and had another attack of head aliments. He rushed over to the top medical school and killed many of the students. Mr. Ng and Lee Mun's son from the school escaped to Kwan Yin's camp and informed Wah To of what had happened. At once Wah To requested Kwan Yin to allow him to return to Xuchang. Kwan Yin refused at first but upon realizing that his friend's mind had been made up, he allowed Wah To to leave. Cheung Miu Sum overheard the conversation that Wah To had with Kwan Yin and became upset when she heard that Wah To's purpose of returning to Xuhang was to save Lan Ting. Before leaving Wah To explained to Cheung Miu Sum that he had always loved her, but he needed to go back and rescue Lan Ting. Wah To stated that he would never be happy until Lan Ting was set free otherwise he would spend the rest of his life feeling guilty. Upon his return to Xuchang, Wah To, immediately went to ease Cho Cho's head aliments. When Cao Cao recovered he was immediately angry, however Wah To had grown wiser. Wah To realized that Cho Cho's life was in his hands just as his life was in Cho Cho's hands. Finally Wah To promised to cure Cao Cao totally on three conditions.

Firstly Wah To wanted to restore the top medical school, so that even after his death there would be doctors to heal all of the sick and wounded. Secondly Wah To wanted to write a book detailing all his knowledge and healing, so that his knowledge would not be lost. Finally Wah To wanted the release of Lan Ting. Cao Cao could guess what the third condition was and promised on the other two conditions as well. Wah To saw the release of Lan Ting and sent her out of Xuchang. Once Lan Ting was released Wah To began writing up his medical book. The medical book was then handed out to all students in the medical school and Wah to had planned to distribute it to other doctors as well. Lee Mun on the other wanted to keep the book for himself and plotted Wah To's downfall. After completing his medical book, Wah To suggested brain surgery as the method to cure Cho Cho's head aliments. Cho Cho's adviser was very suspicious, but Cao Cao was certain that he was a good judge of character and went ahead with the suggested method of cure. However the day before the planned surgery, Cao Cao received a gift from Sin Kin of Wu. It was the head of Kwan Yin, who had been captured and subsequently executed. Cao Cao let out a loud laugh, because he could not believe that such a brave and fierce warrior as Kwan Yin would fall victim to the silver spoon Sin Kin. Cao Cao then instructed a massive burial for Kwan Yin to pay respects for this great warrior, and to send his body back to Lau Bei of Shu. By doing this he hoped that Lau Bei would attack Sin Kin to avenge the death of Kwan Yin, giving him an opportunity to attack both of them when supplies are depleted.

When Wah To discovered that Kwan Yin had been slained in battle, he grieved too much. Cao Cao became very suspicious of Wah To and suspected that he might have the ulterior motive of avenging Kwan Yin's death. Lee Mun spotted Cho Cho's suspicion and gave him a mixture to drink before sleeping. Whilst asleep, Cao Cao, had another nightmare where he witness Kwan Yin's death and the two had a conversation. Kwan Yin was pleased to have died in battle and pointed out that Cao Cao was an evil man and would die a tragic death. In the morning Wah To arrived to prepare for surgery with a head ban to pay respects for Kwan Yin. Lee Mun made Wah To remove the head ban to make things easier for Cao Cao. When Wah To was about to begin operating on Cao Cao, he spotted Kwan Yin's head ban in Wah To's sleeves. Cao Cao began to panic thinking that Kwan Yin was back for revenge. Cao Cao then pointed to Wah To thinking that it was Kwan Yin approaching to kill him and ordered his generals to have him arrested for attempted murder. Wah To was subsequently locked up and Lee Mun was ordered to burn all of his medical books. Of course Lee Mun benefited the most because he kept a cop for himself, so he would become the best doctor in the land.

When Cao Cao came to his senses he went to see Wah To. He no longer trusted Wah To but allowed him time to rewrite his medical book so he could pass the knowledge on to other doctors. Wah To completed the medical book with draft pages from the original book. He was missing some pages and informed Ah Orr and his wife Cheung Miu Sum to fetch them from the medical school. There Lee Mun tricked Cheung Miu Sum into handing him the final pages. When Cheung Miu Sum discovered that she had been tricked, she burnt Lee Mun's copy of Wah To's medical book and took the missing pages away with Ah Orr's help. Once the book was completed a second time, Wah To decided to hand the book over to Cheung Miu Sum hoping that his knowledge would be passed on the right people. After completing his book, Wah To sat in prison and attempted to trace over his life and rewrite all of his medical knowledge. Wah To became really stressed. As wrote and tried to remember, he spat out blood and died in his cell. When Cao Cao's adviser informed him that Wah To was already dead, he fell into a deep coma realizing that there was no one in the world who could heal him. Cao Cao died shortly after Wah To's death.

In the end Cheung and Wah family opened a medical shop and continued to practice medicine. They passed on Wah To's healing methods to those who wanted to practice medicine for the purpose of saving lives. Also their medical shop was aimed at helping people rather than to generate money. Even doctor Cheung worked at the medical shop. Meanwhile in another part of China, Lan Ting, taught a massive group of villagers her adapted monkey style Dao exercises which could keep people fit. An old man approached her an enquired what she was doing. Lan Ting explained the logic about the Dao exercise and then went on telling the old man about a mythical doctor called Wah To.

RATING (5)

"Incurable Traits", is a historical series about the life of Wah To. As such not much action and fighting is expected. TVB attempted to inject some comedy in this series with the secondary characters. Although interesting for a little bit, the story did drag on for other parts. Flat spots are plenty during the series. The ending was really not befitting the title of the story. Incurable traits was an appropriate title because there are characteristics in people which just can't be healed by medicine like, greed and suspicion. Thus Cao Cao could never be cured of his head aliments throughout the story. Therefore I find it interesting that the Cheung family would suddenly change their greedy ways and not worry about money at the end. Remember the saying old habits die hard.

This was the first time that I've seen Lam Mun Lung and Ng Wing Mei in action. They were good together as an on screen couple. Ng Wing Mei acted very well and played her part well. Lam Mun Lung has similar traits to Chan Kam Hung, in that he doesn't look very heroic. But as far as the character of Wah To goes, he performed exceptionally well. After all Wah To is not really meant to be heroic. The real hero in this series is Kwan Yin played by Wan Yeung Ming. Although Wan Yeung Ming acted well he did not really have that commanding presence or authority about him that Kwan Yin should posses. Felix was excellent in his role even though he was only a supporting actor.

For once it seemed like TVB put some effort into the costumes in the series. The theme song is average. But there is really nothing impressive about this series to separate it from the pack so 5 out of 10 is a fair rating.

WONG YAT WAH AS CAO CAO

Cao Cao is another dynamic character with various different characteristics. Cao Cao was fearless yet faithless, savage yet chilvarous, traitor yet loyal to those around him. Cao Cao was also a good governor of his Empire and his policy of promoting talent to official position allowed his Empire to reign supreme. Yet Cao Cao is often depicted as a villain.

Felix Wong was chosen well for this role. Felix Wong has a commanding voice and a heroic stature so he blended in as a hero amongst his own group of generals at Xuchang. Felix Wong was also good at projecting Cho Cho's other characteristics. Felix Wong is one of the few actors who can look heroic and at other time evil in the same series. His physical attributes combined with his costume made Cho Cho's character come alive. Once again this series reminds us what a great actor Felix is. Of the entire cast he performed his role to perfection and was clearly the best actor.

Also looking ahead should TVB produce a series based on the famous novel written by Luo Guanzhong, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", Felix would make a great Kwan Yin. Felix has that heroic stature and is a commanding speaker, which would suit him in the role as the fearless warrior Kwan Yin.
