BARBARA YUNG MEI LING
Most Famous Role: Wong YungYung
Mei Ling is perhaps the best female actor during
the 1980's, and perhaps ever. It was so tragic
that she died whilst at the peak of her career.
However I'm sure that she'll remain in our hearts
forever. I've listed her most famous role as Wong
Yung in "The Legend of the Condor
Heroes", but the fact is all of her roles
are famous. The majority of TVB Series, which she
starred in during her short career, were
considered classics.
She
started her career in 1982 in a comedy
co-starring Tong Chun Yip and Yam Tak Wah, in
"Sup Sam Mui". This was the series that
shot her into stardom. She received high acclaims
in this Series, as TVB had never seen quite a
brilliant actor like Yung Mei Ling before. Infact
Yung Mei Ling is perhaps the most versatile
actress in TVB during the 1980's appearing in
many different roles and series. She can act in
comedies, histories, tragedies and family
dramas.
In
1983 she starred as the intelligent and yet
mischievous Wong Yung in "The Legend of the
Condor Heroes", which I consider as her best
acting performance ever. Who can forget her
dressed up as a playful beggar to at the
beginning of the series? Yung Mei Ling was
virtually flawless in her depiction Wong Yung. In
another acclaimed role Yung Mei Ling played the
Weng Tai princess Song Siu Ching in "The New
Adventure of Chor Lau Heung", which also
starred Miu Kiu Wai. In fact she appeared in many
TVB Serials with Miu Kiu Wai including the
classic comedy "Tin Si Jap Wai", the
hit series "Keut Jun Yun Mo Moon", and
"Sang Sau Kiu Wong". This made then the
most popular acting male and female duo of the
1980's.

SHEREN TANG SUI MAN
Most Famous Role: Lau Gum FaiTang
Sui Man is not one of the most acclaimed actors
during the 1980's, as she began her career in the
mid 1980's. Her best acting performance was in,
"The Legend of the General Who Never
Was", as Lau Gum Fai. In this role she
played a shy, rich merchant's daughter who is
sick and tired of being treated like an
investment. Her farther prevents her from leaving
the house in the fear that she'll fall in love
with a poor man. At the same time her farther
tries to marry her to the richest man in town.
However Lau Gum Fai then falls in love with one
of the servants, Sit Yun Gwai, who becomes in the
end, the richest man in town as he becomes a big
general of the Tong Dynasty. This was also one of
the best series I ever saw in the 1980's, funny
and yet tragic.
She
also starred in two TVB Serials with Leung Chiu
Wai in adaptation of Jin Yong's novels, "The
Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber", and
"Hup Hak Sang". In "The Heavenly
Sword and Dragon Saber", Tang Siu Mun played
an seemingly innocent girl. However she is
jealous and obsessed with winning the love of
Cheung Mo Ky, played by Tony Leung. In "Hup
Hak Sang", she played a mischievous girl
Ding Ding, who becomes one of 4 wives of one of
the two twins, Sak Jong Yuk. I think she was
really cute in this series. She also appeared in
many other TVB Serials, such as "Luk Ji Cum
Mor" co-starring Ng Kai Wai and Sak Sau,
"Kit Jin Wong Seng" co-starring Cheung
Sau Chao and Leung Ka Yan, and "Tin
Bin" co-starring Kwok Chun On and Lai Mei
Han. She also starred in another movie with Kwok
Chun On and Yammine Nam Kit Ying. Overall Tang
Siu Man demonstrated the ability to act in
various roles.

CARMAN LEE YUK TUNG
Most Famous Role: Sui Long
LiuLee Yuk Tung starred in
her first TVB Serial as Siu Long Liu in "The
Condor Heroes 1995", co-starring Koo Tin
Lok. So far I've only seen her in two TVB
Serials, the other is Wong Chi Ying, in
"Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils 1996",
co-starring Wong Yat Wah, Fan Siu Wan, Chan Ho
Man, Lau Kam Leung. Both are reproductions of Jin
Yong's famous novels.
Her
best performance so far is in "The Condor
Heroes 1995", as Sui Long Liu. I think she
did a better job of portraying Siu Long Liu then
any one else so far. Her stunning good looks, and
sweet voice suited her well in this role. Chun
Yuk Lin's version of Sui Long Lui was just too
bitchy for my liking. Lee Yuk Tung's version was
more elegant and graceful. However Chan Yuk
Ling's version is the second best portal of Siu
Long Liu so far.
I
was more drawn towards the two main characters in
the 1995 version more so then the original. I was
left wandering whether Yeung Gor and Sui Long Liu
was ever going to have happy times
together.
Lee
Yuk Tung's played two characters in
"Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils 1996", as
Wong Yee Ying and her mother. In this series Lee
Yuk Tung displayed her varied talents portraying
two characters with two different personalities.
Wong Yee Yin is very sweet and kind, whilst her
mother is very cold and full of hate. She looked
very sweet and innocent in this series as Wong
Yee Ying.

ATHENA CHU YAN
Most Famous Role: Wong YungAthena
Chu has starred in only one TVB Serial that I
know of so far and that was in the reproduction
of Jin Yong's Novel, "The Legend of the
Condor Heroes", in 1994 as Wong Yung. Athena
was under tight scrutiny in this role because
Yung Mei Ling played so well in the original
series. I personally think Athena did an
excellent job of portraying Wong Yung as well.
Her stunning looks and young facial appeal made
her most convincing in playing the role of Wong
Yung who is supposed to be 16 years of age.
Infact Athena was voted by the Hong Kong male
population as the prettiest girl in acting in
1998.
In
a disappointing cast and poor reproduction of the
1982 series, Athena Chu was the one shinning
light of the series. Athena Chu depicted the
intelligent and clever side of Wong Yung. In the
novel Wong Yung is supposed to be a female
version of the famous Chinese character in the
classic novel, "The Romance of the Three
Kingdoms", Chi Kwok Leung. Yung Mei Ling
depicted the more mischievous side of Wong Yung.
Therefore in both cases they were equally good.
I'm surprised not to have seen more of Athena Chu
in lead roles in more TVB Series.

IDY CHAN YUK LING
Most Famous Role: Siu Long
LiuIdy Chan is one of my
favorite female actors of the 1980's. She was
also one of the most beautiful women actors
during that period, besides Teresa Chiu Ngar Chi.
That is why Idy Chan got lead roles in TVB
Serials such as "Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils
1982", as Wong Yee Yin. This was the first
series that I saw Idy Chan and she did an
exceptional job. Infact think she did a better
job here than in "The Return of the Condor
Heroes".
However
most people tend to point to her role as Siu Long
Liu, as her best acting performance ever. Infact
Idy and Andy Lau received the highest acclaim and
most renowned for this series. Even till this
very day. I agree that, "The Return of the
Condor Heroes", was the most the most
popular series of the 1980's. However popularity
does not often determine that it is the best.
Idy
Chan also put on a brilliant performance in
"The Grand Canal", co-starring Leung
Chiu Wai, as Yeung Lan Ling. At the beginning we
are made to think that Yeung Lan Ling was a
totally heartless person. But towards the end we
find that she is a very kind hearted person. This
series demonstrated Idy Chan's versatility.
However her better performances tend to be in
modern TVb dramas.

JAMIE CHIC MEI CHUN
Most Famous Role: Ngowk Ling
SanChic Mei Chun played
many supporting roles during the 1980's. Her best
acting performance was in "Siu Mo Kong
Wu", in 1984 co-starring Chow Yun Fat as
Ling Wu Chong.
She
is now married to Miu Kiu Wai, who she starred
with in TVB Serials such as, "The Yang's
Saga", "Tin Lung Sun Kim", and
"Chut Tao Sheung Kiu", a very popular
series which feature Leung Chiu Wai as the lead.
In that series Chic Mei Chun and Miu Kiu Wai only
played cameo roles as the parents of the two
brothers who where the main characters in that
story. "Chut Tao Sheung Kiu", is one of
Ku Long's famous stories.
Chic
Mei Chun also put in a cameo performance in,
"Sit San Fei Wu", or in English
"The Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain",
co-starring Liu Leung Wai. Chic Mei Chun can best
be remembered for playing the innocent, cute,
female supporting roles during the 1980's. Chic
Mei Chun also starred another Jin Yong production
of "The Book and the Sword", starring
Yam Tak Wah. I am surprised that she did not get
many leading roles during the 1980's.
