THE FOUNDATION (1983)
CAST
SUMMARY Shortly after Master Yum's death, Kong Fung, informed all of the Ho Tin Moon students that he had been named as their 20th leader. At once Sima Yan the eldest classmate stood out and opposed the decision, accusing Kong Fung, of stealing the Ho Tin Moon leader insignia. Sima Yan then stated that a new leader would not be announced until Master Yum's death was avenged. Following that day Kong Fung was depressed because he grieved for Master Yum, kneeling infront of his burial for days. One day he was visited by Lee Lok Wan who called him, leader of Ho Tin Moon. Sima Yan overheard the conversation and was extremely upset. Later many of the kung fu leaders came to pay respects to Master Yum. During the visit Lee Jing, stood out and asked who the new leader of Ho Tin Moon was. Second eldest classmate Foo stated that their new leader was Kong Fung, but Sima Yan protested. Both men went to a back room to fight it out. Finally Kong Fung decided to leave the school and hand the leadership over to Sima Yan since many of the Ho Tin Moon began fighting each other. With this Kong Fung left Ho Tin Moon, to find a safe place to continue his Man Chung Sun Kung training. But before he left he paid Lee Sai Mun a visit. Together the two men drank. Lee Sai Mun was bitterly disappointed with Kong Fung, because he wanted to use him to gain the throne. Kong Fung stated that he went to Ho Tin Moon to learn kung fu only and did not have any other intention in mind. Once more Lee Sai Mun tried to persuade Kong Fung into fighting for the Ho Tin Moon leadership. This upset Kong Fung who stood up and stated that he was only interested in learning kung fu and nothing else. Kong Fung continued to state that he in order to learn kung fu he choose kung fu over his girlfriend. Lee Sai Mun stood up with him and stated that there are plenty of good woman in the world and told Kong Fung to find another woman if that would make him happy. At once Kong Fung was not impressed by Lee Sai Mun's comments, stating that Lee Sai Mun would not understand as he has not yet lost the woman he loves. As he went to speak further he realised that Chun Sik Sik was standing behind him having heard the entire conversation. Once again both became a little uncomfortable. Chun Sik Sik walked over to pour wine for Kong Fung, but he rejected her attempt stating that he did not need any more wine. Suddenly Kong Fung stood up and stated that he needed to leave. He was about to leave, but then turned to offer Lee Sai Mun, some advice. He told Lee Sai Mun, not to choose fame and fortune over his girlfriend, otherwise he will regret it one day. Lee Sai Mun laughed at the comments stating that he would never give up on Chun Sik Sik. Kong Fung was happy enough with this reply and left. That evening Chun Sik Sik felt slightly sorry for Kong Fung, until Lee Lok Wan arrived to seek her advice on how to get Kong Fung to love her. When Chun Sik Sik, found out that Kong Fung had left without wanting Lee Lok Wan to be with him, she assumed that Kong Fung had not changed. She assumed that Kong Fung still preferred kung fu over any woman. Chun Sik Sik then taught Lee Lok Wan how to be with Kong Fung, teaching her how to cook, and clean after him. This was exactly what Chun Sik Sik had used to do for Kong Fung. As the days past Kong Fung found a peaceful place and practised kung fu. Everyday someone brought him lunch and he assumed it was Chun Sik Sik, until one day when Sima Yan tried to send men to kill him. Lee Lok Wan was captured going up to the house and Kong Fung rescued her from the masked attackers. Lee Lok Wan then revealed that she had been the one who had cook and cleaned for him. At once Kong Fung was disappointed but did not mind Lee Lok Wan, as long as she continued to help him out. Later Lee Lok Wan uncovered that it was Sima Yan who had told the Wu Ling clan were Master Yum was hidden on the night of the attack. She went to report the information to Kong Fung, who immediately returned to Ho Tin Moon. When Kong Fung told the other students what had happened, all of them attacked Sima Yan keen to avenge Master Yum's death. Sima Yan managed to escape however thanks to Man Ching Ping who was sent by Lee Wai Gut to rescue him. Sima Yan immediately collaborated with Lee Wai Gut, and agreed reluctantly to form an alliance with Master Yin of Wu Ling. Infact Master Yin, went on further to state that the two schools should merge as one. Lee Wai Gut then planned to deal with Kong Fung. Master Yin of Wu Ling opened a kung fu forum on behalf of Sima Yan and accused Kong Fung of having evil intentions by taking the Ho Tin Moon leadership with force. In the process Man Ching Ping, and others prevented Kong Fung from attending the forum so all the kung fu leaders believed Sima Yan. When Kong Fung finally turned up he was surrounded and attacked. He fought with Master Yin, who used a hidden poison needle to poison Kong Fung, who retreated to the top of a mountain. He was soon surrounded with all of the escape passages block but he remained safe at the top of the mountain. When Lee Sai Mun found out that Kong Fung was in trouble he elected to plan a rescue attempt as he needed Kong Fung's help. Meanwhile Lee Lok Wan risked her life to be with Kong Fung, and later helped him escape by creating a diversion. Lee Lok Wan dressed in Kong Fung's clothes, and jumped down one side of the mountain. All of Master Yin's men chased after Lee Lok Wan allowing Kong Fung an easier escape on the other side. Kong Fung was soon discovered but he was then saved by Lee Sai Mun and Lee Jing. After that event Kong Fung thanked Lee Sai Mun for saving his life and vowed to help Lee Sai Mun, to pay him back. Lee Sai Mun was extremely happy with this reply and together they went drinking. At the pub Kong Fung discovered that Sima Yan had elected to merge Ho Tin Moon with Wu Ling. At once Kong Fung was not pleased and went to prevent the merger from taking place. He returned to Ho Tin Moon and defeated Master Yum and Man Ching Ping. Kong Fung then regained control of Ho Tin Moon and became their leader once more. Having been defeated Sima Yan decided to capture Lee Lok Wan, to force Kong Fung to duel with him. Sima Yan wanted Kong Fung to tie his hands and feet together before agreeing to release Lee Lok Wan. Kong Fung obliged and even with the handicap he managed to beat and kill Sima Yan thus avenging the death of Master Yum. After that event Kong Fung continued his Man Chung Sun Kung training in peace, leaving Lee Jing temporarily in charge of Ho Tin Moon. Shortly after three monks from Sai Wek arrived in town to challenge Kong Fung. Lee Jing informed the monks that Kong Fung would not see them because he was in training. The monks were bitterly disappointed until Lee Wai Gut advised them to kill many innocent people to force Kong Fung to duel with them. When Kong Fung found out what had been happening whilst he was away, he wanted to help but Lee Jing urged him to finish his Man Chung Sun Kung training first. Lee Jing then held a kung fu forum to deal with the monks. The monks arrived at Ho Tin Moon and caused trouble at the forum. Finally Kong Fung completed his training and came out to meet the monks. In three moves he defeated all of the monks with Man Chung San Kung. But instead of killing the monks he allowed them to go stating that kung fu should not be used for killing but self defence. Upon doing this act Kong Fung gained the respect of all of the other kung fu leaders. Having finally achieved his goal, Kong Fung, walked around Ho Tin Moon and reflected on his journey to becoming their leader. He remembered how he begged Master Yum to accept him, to when Master Yum handed him the insignia before dying. Kong Fung felt happy but at the same time he felt sad. He had finally accomplish his goal but in the process he had lost Chun Sik Sik. Later he went home to pay respects to his father. He sat by his father's burial and stated that he had finally accomplish his goal so that his father can rest in peace. Meanwhile Lee Sai Mun was obsessed with gaining the throne. Chun Sik Sik started to worry about Lee Sai Mun because she could see that he was too obsessed and knew that he might leave her one day. All Chun Sik Sik wanted was to be happy but Lee Sai Mun stated that he would never be happy until he was Emperor. At once Lee Sai Mun invited Kong Fung to dinner and told him the truth. Lee Sai Mun told Kong Fung that he was a prince and that he had helped Kong Fung many times including allowing him to learn Man Chung Sun Kung. Kong Fung was immediately shocked that Lee Sai Mun had kept his identity a secret from him for so long. He immediately sensed that Lee Sai Mun required his help and asked him what he wanted. At once Lee Sai Mun wanted Kong Fung to round up a loyal band of kung fu experts to help him obtain the throne. Kong Fung refused stating that he had to uphold the 100 year rules established by the masters of Ho Tin Moon, which forbid the school to take part in political matters. Lee Sai Mun insisted that Kong Fung should help him. Still Kong Fung stood his ground and refuse to help. Finally Lee Sai Mun gave up but invited Kong Fung to dinner on lantern night. At once Kong Fung did not want to attend knowing that Chun Sik Sik would be there but Lee Sai Mun insisted. On lantern night Kong Fung was feeling uneasy. As soon as Chun Sik Sik arrived, he excused himself to speak with her personally. Chun Sik Sik knew that Kong Fung went home and asked him whether he went to pay respects to his father. Kong Fung replied that he did pay respects to his father as well as visiting all of the folks and places that they had been to when they were young. Listening to Kong Fung talk, brought back memories to Chun Sik Sik, and she suddenly dropped her lantern. At once both Kong Fung and Chun Sik Sik went to pick up the lantern, that they accidentally grabbed each other by the hand. Once again Kong Fung reflected over the happy times in the past. Lee Sai Mun, Cheung Chut Chun and the others watch on suspecting that Kong Fung and Chun Sik Sik more than just knew each other and were hiding something from them. Chun Sik Sik then picks up the lantern and reminds Kong Fung that when they were young used walk along the river with the lantern. Kong Fung replied that he remembered but it had been a long time ago. Soon they rejoined the others for dinner, but when Kong Fung, saw Lee Sai Mun with his arms around Chun Sik Sik, he felt uneasy. Kong Fung immediately made an excuse to leave and hurried away. Lee Lok Wan went to chase after Kong Fung to enquire why he was leaving so soon. Kong Fung immediately took out his anger on Lee Lok Wan. Once again Kong Fung returned to his room and picked up the umbrella that he had once given to Chun Sik Sik and reflected over the past. That night Kong Fung got extremely drunk and wrote Chun Sik Sik's name on a piece of paper many times. In the morning he gather enough courage to go and see Chun Sik Sik. When Lee Lok Wan went to find Kong Fung she uncovered the name Sik written on the pieces of papaer and went to warn Lee Sai Mun. Meanwhile Kong Fung met Chun Sik Sik that he still loved her and regretted turning her away. Chun Sik Sik then told Kong Fung that he loved Lee Sai Mun only and Kong Fung's apology came two years too late. With this she left. Lee Sai Mun had followed them and began to get jealous. He immediately went to see Chun Sik Sik for an explanation. Chun Sik Sik then told Lee Sai Mun that she and Kong Fung were former lovers but reassured him that it was over. Lee Sai Mun was happy enough with the reply but he wanted to make certain. The following day he went to find Kong Fung attempting to be a match maker with Lee Lok Wan. Once again Kong Fung rejected the idea stating that treated Lee Lok Wan as a sister only. Kong Fung went on to state that he had only loved one woman but now it was too late as she had already fallen for someone else. At once Lee Sai Mun realised that Kong Fung still loved Chun Sik Sik only. Meanwhile Lee Wai Gut returned to ask Lee King Sing to marry Dau Chiu Yee to lend Minister Dau's forces to deal with Lee Sai Mun. Lee King Sing listen to his brother and got Minister Dau to agree on a marriage date. Deep underneath Lee Wai Gut hated the idea because he loved Dau Chiu Yee as well and was not about to let it happen. Lee Wai Gut had always wanted to become Emperor so he could marry Dau Chiu Yee so he continued to play Lee King Sing against Lee Sai Mun. When Dau Chiu Yee discovered that she was to marry Lee King Sing, she ran away to see Lee Sai Mun. When Lee Sai Mun found out what had happened, he was sad because Dau Chiu Yee was one method to obtain more forces to help him gain the throne. Suddenly Lee Sai Mun wanted to kill two birds with a stone. He wanted to work on Dau Chiu Yee's love, to lend Minister Dau's forces. At the same time he wanted Chun Sik Sik to return to Kong Fung's side so he would help him. At once Lee Sai Mun treated Chun Sik Sik poorly and pretended to love Dau Chiu Yee only. The following days Lee Sai Mun would reject Chun Sik Sik's love and went out with Dau Chiu Yee. His plan backfired however as Lee Wai Gut managed to get Minister Dau extremely upset that he sided with them. Lee King Sing and Lee Wai Gut then went to collect Dau Chiu Yee, threatening Lee Sai Mun with the weight of Minister Dau's forces. Left with no choice Lee Sai Mun allowed Dau Chiu Yee to return to the capital. Once Dau Chiu Yee left Chun Sik Sik asked Lee Sai Mun to explain his actions over the past few days. Lee Sai Mun then told Chun Sik Sik that he had always loved Dau Chiu Yee, and when he becomes Emperor he would never marry a peasant girl like Chun Sik Sik. The following day Lee Sai Mun left for the capital, so Chun Sik Sik ran away. It rained heavily and with no where to go Chun Sik Sik decided to go and see Kong Fung. But upon arriving at the door steps of Ho Tin Moon, Chun Sik Sik, decided to walk away until Kong Fung came out with the umbrella to shelter her from the rain. Upon seeing Kong Fung, Chun Sik Sik, passed out. That evening Kong Fung remained by Chun Sik Sik's side. However Chun Sik Sik called out Lee Sai Mun's name whilst she was sleeping. Once again Kong Fung was not very happy but he still loved Chun Sik Sik, so he remained by her side. The following day Kong Fung took Chun Sik Sik for a walk down the beach so she could relax and think things over. Whilst they were talking Kong Fung discovered that Lee Sai Mun, knew that they were former lovers. At once Kong Fung realised why Lee Sai Mun had left Chun Sik Sik. Kong Fung immediately went to find Lee Sai Mun to inform him that he would never help him gain the throne regardless of whether, Chun Sik Sik, was by his side or not. But Lee Sai Mun insisted that Kong Fung help him as Lee Wai Gut's forces were growing stronger. Kong Fung then stated that Ho Tin Moon did not care about politics and refused to help. Lee Sai Mun then attempted to put all the world's wrong on Lee Wai gut's shoulders and stated that Lee Wai Gut would be an evil Emperor. Lee Sai Mun then stated that he was the real Emperor and would not give up his quest. Still Kong Fung refused to help asking whether Lee Sai Mun had any proof that Lee Wai Gut had done so many evil things. Lee Sai Mun had no evidence so Kong Fung left. The following day Lee Sai Mun went to apologise to Chun Sik Sik, who had already forgiven him. They were together once more. But Lee Sai Mun did not forget about Kong Fung however. He sent Lee Jing to set Kong Fung up. Lee Jing sent a Tak Keut messenger to visit Kong Fung to offer an alliance with Tak Keut. Kong Fung rejected the alliance outright, but Lee Jing killed one of the Emperor Lee Ying's spies and framed Kong Fung for the murder. Next Lee Sai Mun went to see the Emperor stating that Kong Fung and Ho Tin Moon wanted to form a rebellion against the Tong Dynasty. Lee Jing then sent a hitman to attempt to assassinate Lee Ying. The masked man entered the room shouting that he was from Ho Tin Moon and attempted to kill Lee Ying but Lee Sai Mun blocked the blow. At once Emperor Lee Ying was upset and ordered to have all Ho Tin Moon students killed including Kong Fung. A smile rose across Lee Sai Mun's face as the first step in his evil plan had worked. When Lee Wai Gut found out that General Yang was sent to eliminate Ho Tin Moon, he was extremely happy and offered to lend his forces. When Lee Lok Wan found out what was to happen, she immediately went to warn Kong Fung, who sent a messenger for Lee Sai Mun's help. Lee Jing took his forces and surrounded Ho Tin Moon killing all the messengers sent by Kong Fung. In the morning General Yang went to arrest Kong Fung, but he resisted the arrest attempt and fought with the Tong army. General Yang then dispatched the Shaolin monk soldiers on Ho Tin Moon and they were forced to take shelter in a cave. When Lee Jing heard that many Ho Tin Moon students died, he went to report back to Lee Sai Mun, who refused to help. Lee Sai Mun informed Lee Jing to let all of the Ho Tin Moon students die except for Kong Fung because he was still useful. With that they waited for news of the attack. Meanwhile with no escape path many of the Ho Tin Moon students elected to sacrifice their lives to allow Kong Fung to escape. Before leaving Kong Fung promised all the students that he would avenge their deaths. With that they all went out to battle with the monks. Kong Fung managed to escape after using his Man Chung Sun Kung to fight three Shaolin abbots to a standstill. The Shaolin abbots respected Kong Fung's kung fu allowing him to escape. Kong Fung then sought shelter under a kung fu master. Meanwhile Man Ching Ping tacked Kong Fung down and murdered the kung fu master who sheltered him and his entire family. Upon returning Kong Fung was extremely angry with Man Ching Ping and they fought. Suffering a heavy injury Kong Fung was easily defeated as Man Ching Ping went in for the kill. Finally a monk and Lee Sai Mun arrived to save Kong Fung. As soon as Kong Fung had slightly recovered Lee Sai Mun entered and insisted that Kong Fung help him to gain the throne by gathering all the kung fu schools to deal with Lee Wai Gut. Kong Fung did not want to listen, and stated that he was tired and needed to rest. Lee Sai Mun then became outraged blaming Lee Wai Gut for the attack. Lee Sai Mun then promised that if he became Emperor, Kong Fung would be allowed to restore Ho Tin Moon. But Kong Fung turned a deaf ear to Lee Sai Mun's pleas. The following days everyone from Lee Sai Mun, to Lee Lok Wan attempted to convince Kong Fung to help Lee Sai Mun deal with Lee Wai Gut. One day Kong Fung went back to Ho Tin Moon and saw it in ruins. After some thought he finally offered to help Lee Sai Mun. Upon returning he was greeted by Chun Sik Sik, and for a moment he could not believe that even she would try to convince him. He then informed Chun Sik Sik that he would help Lee Sai Mun. This brought a smile to her face and she returned to inform Lee Sai Mun. Kong Fung then personally spoke with Lee Sai Mun making him promise to allow him to restore Ho Tin Moon should they succeed. Lee Sai Mun promised. Meanwhile Tak Keut attacked the Tong Dynasty. Emperor Lee Ying sent Lee King Sing and Lee Wai gut to deal with the attacked. They failed and soon Emperor Lee Ying called for Lee Sai Mun to lead the attack. With Kong Fung's help rounded up all the support of the kung fu masters Lee Sai Mun easily won the war. Lee Sai Mun then promised Kong Fung that he would persuade the Emperor to allow him to restore Ho Tin Moon. Instead of doing as he promised Lee Sai Mun told the Emperor not to allow Ho Tin Moon to be restored. Lee Sai Mun knew Kong Fung would no longer help him if Ho Tin Moon was restored. When Lee Sai Mun informed Kong Fung that he could not restore his school he became angry vowing to help Lee Sai Mun to the fullest. After the war Lee Wai Gut felt threaten by Lee Sai Mun and convinced Lee King Sing to join him in a plot to kill Emperor Lee Ying to gain the throne themselves. Lee Wai Gut had planned to use General Yang and Man Ching Ping to do the job. Man Ching Ping was happy finally having the chance to avenge his parents death. He visited his girlfriend Sit Seung Wan for the last time realising that he may never get the chance again. Unfortunately their plan was foiled by Lee Jing and Lee Sai Mun who made General Yang suspicious. Lee Lok Wan then stole Lee Wai Gut's insignia. Lee Sai Mun then wrote a fake letter to General Yang who immediately attempted to kill Emperor Lee Ying. During his assassination attempt Lee Sai Mun and his loyal subjects defended the Emperor and accused Lee Wai Gut of the attack. From that day forth Emperor Lee Ying no longer trusted Lee King Sing or Lee Wai Gut. Having failed Lee Wai Gut then sent Man Ching Ping to kill General Yang to eliminate evidence which would link him directly to the assassination attempt. At this stage the Emperor only suspected him, so Lee Wai Gut, next sought to kill Lee Sai Mun. Meanwhile Lee Sai Mun wanted to gain the favour of Minister Dau so he decided to visit Dau Chiu Yee. Despite having been treated badly in the past Dau Chiu Yee agreed to help Lee Sai Mun to persuade her father. When Lee King Sing and Lee Wai Gut uncovered that Dau Chiu Yee had spoken with Lee Sai Mun they immediately sent hitmen to kill him. Dau Chiu Yee suspected something was wrong and convinced Minister Dau to send men to protect Lee Sai Mun. Meanwhile it began to rain and Chun Sik Sik was praying at a temple. To shelter from the rain Kong Fung ran into the temple, and was surprised to see Chun Sik Sik. At once Kong Fung realised that Chun Sik Sik was troubled and asked why she was sad. Chun Sik Sik stated that she was worried about Lee Sai Mun who became increasingly obsessed with becoming Emperor. Kong Fung then told Chun Sik Sik not to worry. In reply Chun Sik Sik asked Kong Fung, why he was at the temple. Kong Fung replied that he did not intend to pass through by the rain brought him there. Chun Sik Sik looked outside and realised that it had been raining for days. She then asked Kong Fung whether he remembered when they use to watch the rainbow once the rain cleared. Kong Fung replied that he remembered but now longer had the opportunity to watch with her. As the rain stopped Kong Fung made a move to leave, but then passed the umbrella which he was carrying over to Chun Sik Sik to protect her from the rain. Chun Sik Sik took the umbrella and realised it was the same one that Kong Fung had given to her three years ago. She took the umbrella and returned home only to discover that Lee Sai Mun had been visiting Dau Chiu Yee. She was upset at first but was certain that Lee Sai Mun loved her only. Later masked men attempted to kill Lee Sai Mun, but they failed as Minister Dau's men arrived to protect Lee Sai Mun. After that event Minister Dau informed Lee King Sing and Lee Wai Gut not to attempt to kill Lee Sai Mun, threatening them with his military force. Lee Wai Gut was not worried however he worked on another plan to kill the Emperor. Meanwhile Minister Dau realised his daughter loved Lee Sai Mun only. Finally he intervene to arrange a marriage between Dau Chiu Yee and Lee Sai Mun, by offering to form an alliance with Lee Sai Mun. But Minister Dau did not want his daughter to be married to a man who loved another woman so the condition of the alliance was that Lee Sai Mun had to kill Chun Sik Sik. Lee Sai Mun thought over the offer for a while and finally decided that he needed to kill Chun Sik Sik to gain the throne. The days that followed it rained endlessly. Finally Lee Sai Mun decided to take action. Lee Sai Mun offered to take Chun Sik Sik away to a beautiful place to see a rainbow once the sky cleared. Chun Sik Sik was filled with joy over the suggestion as she had not seen a rainbow for a long time. She took out the umbrella that Kong Fung had presented her to shelter them from the rain until they arrived at the beach. Chun Sik Sik was jumping around in joy as the rainbow came out. She then turned to speak with Lee Sai Mun, and received a stab to the chest. Chun Sik Sik died instantly, as Lee Sai Mun stood over her looking at the rainbow which suddenly disappeared. Lee Lok Wan had witness the murder and stood in shock that her brother could bring himself to kill the woman he loved. She then rushed forward and discovered that Chun Sik Sik had infact died. At once Lee Sai Mun feared that Lee Lok Wan might tell Kong Fung that he had killed Chun Sik Sik, so he instructed her to keep it a secret between them. Lee Lok Wan then agreed to keep everything a secret for Lee Sai Mun's sake. Shortly after Lee Lok Wan went to tell Kong Fung that Chun Sik Sik had died. Kong Fung was shocked and failed to believe it. He rushed to the beach and found an umbrella which belonged to Chun Sik Sik. He picked it up and realise that it was stained with blood. He saw Lee Sai Mun standing motionless on the beach so he asked him what had happened. Lee Sai Mun confirmed that Chun Sik Sik had died. Still Kong Fung refused to believe them until he returned to Lee Jing's house and found Chun Sik Sik's name on a plark infront of a burial. At once he went behind the burial and saw a body covered with a sheet. As he pulled the sheet back to see who it was he began trembling. Once he pull the sheet away he realised that infact Chun Sik Sik had died. Kong Fung immediately asked Lee Sai Mun for an explanation as to why Chun Sik Sik had died. Lee Sai Mun put the blame on Lee Wai Gut. Eager for revenge Kong Fung made a move to seek out Lee Wai Gut but he was restrained by Lee Sai Mun, who told him that Chun Sik Sik's death would be avenged once he became Emperor. Kong Fung was not impressed, and vowed to avenge Chun Sik Sik's death. The following days Chun Sik Sik was laid to rest at the beach where she died. Having finally lost his love for good Kong Fung went to the pub to drink. He was joined by Lee Lok Wan who was about to reveal that it was Lee Sai Mun who killed Chun Sik Sik but she refrained an joined Kong Fung drinking. At the same time Minister Dau, told the Emperor to change his mind and name Lee Sai Mun as heir to the throne. Lee Sai Mun was then bestowed that title the following day. Having accomplished the first part of his mission Lee Sai Mun was extremely happy. Meanwhile Lee Wai Gut and Lee King Sing then sought to kill the Emperor once more. This time Lee Wai Gut used the services of Man Ching Ping. Upon hearing what his mission was Man Ching Ping, laughed out loud finally having the opportunity to avenge the death of his parents. Before attempting to kill the Emperor, Man Ching Ping, visited his girlfriend Sit Seung Wan for the last time. This time Man Ching Ping, told Sit Seung Wan that he loved her very much. However Man Ching Ping also informed her that she had been the reason why he failed to assassinate Lee Ying in many attempts. This time Man Ching Ping was sure that he would succeed and then die so he told Sit Seung Wan to kill herself so he would have no distractions. At once Sit Seung Wan understood, and took Man Ching Ping's blade and killed herself. Before dying she told Man Ching Ping that she loved him. Man Ching Ping then went to murder Lee Ying but he was foiled by Lee Sai Mun and Kong Fung. As Man Ching Ping attempted to escape Kong Fung chased after him. They fought to a standstill and Kong Fung suggested setting Man Ching Ping free so he could be with Sit Seung Wan. Man Ching Ping then laughed realising that he had nothing to live for since Sit Seung Wan was dead, so he asked Kong Fung to get out of his way so he could kill Lee Ying. Kong Fung refused, so Man Ching Ping told him that he had to pay him back for the kindness several years ago. Man Ching Ping told Kong Fung that he owed him a sword. At once Kong Fung threw his sword over to Man Ching Ping who threw it on the roof. Kong Fung then fought him bear handed. As they fought the sword fell from the roof and struck Man Ching Ping down. Before his death he asked Kong Fung as a friend to help him pay respects to Sit Seung Wan's burial regularly. Kong Fung agreed and Man Ching Ping died. Kong Fung was saddened by Man Ching Ping's death as he had always respected him for dropping him the 10 taels that allowed him to get into Ho Tin Moon. At once the Emperor was upset that Lee Wai Gut and Lee King Sing had tried to kill him. He ordered to have them arrested. When Lee King Sing and Lee Wai Gut found out that they had failed, they planned to form a rebellion upon returning to the capital. But Lee Sai Mun had predicted their move and planted an ambush to kill them at the capital despite Lee Lok Wan's protest. Upon returning to the capital arrows were fired and struck Lee King Sing down. Lee Wai Gut managed to dodge the arrows, and captured Dau Chiu Yee. Lee Sai Mun allowed him to escape from the capital but Kong Fung perused after him eager to avenge the death of Chun Sik Sik. The others followed closely behind. With no where to go and no where to run, Lee Wai Gut, finally told Dau Chiu Yee that he loved her very much. But Dau Chiu Yee called him a demented and crazy mad man. She then threw a stone at Lee Wai Gut which struck him in the chest. Lee Wai Gut was heartbroken and angry. Suddenly Kong Fung caught up, and as Dau Chiu Yee tried to escape from Lee Wai Gut she was stabbed from behind and died. Kong Fung then approach Lee Wai Gut stating that he would avenge the lives of the Ho Tin Moon students and that of Chun Sik Sik. Lee Wai Gut told Kong Fung to stop however stating that he did not kill all of the Ho Tin Moon students or Chun Sik Sik. Instead Lee Wai Gut stated that it must have been Lee Sai Mun. Kong Fung thought Lee Wai Gut was lying, but he stated that he was about to die and need not lie. Suddenly Lee Sai Mun and the others caught up. Upon realising that Dau Chiu Yee was dead, Lee Sai Mun, walked over to avenge her death. But Lee Wai Gut killed himself not wanting to die at the hands of Lee Sai Mun. At once Kong Fung looked at Lee Sai Mun and realised that in order to obtain the throne he was capable of anything. Shortly after Lee King Sing and Lee Wai Gut's death Lee Sai Mun forced Emperor Lee Ying to retire and make him Emperor. Minister Dau retired and handed over his forces to Lee Jing. He no longer wanted to remain in politics since the death of his daughter. Later Lee Sai Mun held a victory party before ascending the throne. That night Kong Fung wanted to uncover the truth behind Chun Sik Sik's death. He asked Lee Lok Wan who could no longer keep it a secret because she was grieving for her brothers. At once Kong Fung realised that Lee Sai Mun had infact killed Chun Sik Sik personally to form an alliance with Minister Dau in order to gain the throne. Lee Lok Wan then broke down and asked whether Kong Fung had ever loved her and whether he wanted to be with her. Kong Fung then informed Lee Lok Wan that he had always loved Chun Sik Sik and will always love Chun Sik Sik before leaving. Next Kong Fung caught a General and asked who was responsible for ordering the attack on Ho Tin Moon. Once again the answer was Lee Sai Mun. Having told the truth, Lee Lok Wan, decided to leave the capital to live a normal life. She also could not forgive Lee Sai Mun for killing Lee King Sing and Lee Wai Gut. When Lee Sai Mun read the letter that Lee Lok Wan wrote for him he became sad. When Lee Sai Mun found out that Kong Fung knew the truth he began to feel guilty about using such dirty tactics to gain the throne. Soon he received a letter from Kong Fung challenging him to a duel. When Lee Jing found out he told Lee Sai Mun that they needed to plan an ambush. At once Lee Sai Mun laughed, because he could not believe that a time had come when he had to ambush his best friend. The following day Kong Fung met with Lee Sai Mun, and looked ready to take his life. Lee Sai Mun refused to fight him stating that they were the best of friends. Kong Fung then stated that he needed to avenge Chun Sik Sik's death. As Kong Fung charged at Lee Sai Mun, all of Lee Jing's men charged out to fight him. Kong Fung fought through the crowd suffering many cuts and blows. Finally he received a spear to the chest and was heavily injured. Kong Fung still managed to battle on and capture Lee Sai Mun forcing everyone to back off. Kong Fung then took Lee Sai Mun away from the capital. When they were alone, Kong Fung, told Lee Sai Mun that Chun Sik Sik had meant everything to him. He also stated that Lee Sai Mun did not love Chun Sik Sik as much as he did because he killed her to gain the throne. Lee Sai Mun then cut in to say that he would make a good Emperor. Kong Fung then replied that before he became a good Emperor many innocent people died. In order to avenge the deaths of all the students at Ho Tin Moon and Chun Sik Sik, he demanded Lee Sai Mun to take his sword out and fight him. Kong Fung then went on to state that he had only made two mistakes in life. One was to tell Chun Sik Sik to leave him, and second was becoming friends with Lee Sai Mun. Finally Lee Sai Mun fought with Kong Fung. Lee Sai Mun managed to inflict Kong Fung with another injury to the leg. Kong Fung then slashed Lee Sai Mun on the knee and then the chest. Finally Kong Fung, defeated Lee Sai Mun, and had his blade against Lee Sai Mun's neck. Kong Fung was about to kill Lee Sai Mun but the stopped his strike. He realised that the world can go on without him, but not without a good Emperor. He made Lee Sai Mun promise that he would be a good Emperor. Lee Sai Mun promised and Kong Fung stumbled away. Lee Sai Mun then stumbled after Kong Fung still struggling from his wounds. Kong Fung then disappeared into the sunset as Lee Sai Mun stopped, promising once more that he would be a good Emperor. RATING (8) "The Foundation" is a very sad and tragic love story. It depicts how selfish men can be sometimes. The three main characters all sacrifice their love for fame, fortune, and revenge. Kong Fung choose kung fu over Chun Sik Sik only to regret it later. Lee Sai Mun choose power over Chun Sik Sik and actually killed her. Man Ching Ping on the other hand choose revenge and demanded that Sit Seung Wan kill herself so he had no distractions. As a romantic story "The Foundation", was very entertaining and had very special moments. One of those moments was at the beginning when Kong Fung passed the umbrella over to Chun Sik Sik before telling her to leave. Another was that tragic moment when Chun Sik Sik was struck down when the rainbow finally came out. The pairing of Barbara with Felix and then Miu Kiu Wai in this series worked wonders. They all have a distinct on screen chemistry, making the series enjoyable to watch. The storyline however needed some work, and was dull at times. The acting in "The Foundation", was classic. It was the first and last time that Barbara Yung Mei Ling, played such as sad and tragic role. It was different to all of the other roles that she had played before. She was outstanding in her performance as Chun Sik Sik. Miu Kiu Wai acted well in his role as Lee Sai Mun, demonstrating his versatility. Miu Kiu Wai looked commanding, noble, charming and cunning all at once. This series was another Felix Wong and Miu Kiu Wai special. Tong Chun Yip as always played a simple Prince type of role which is characteristic of him throughout his career. The sad and tragic themesongs and sub themesongs also added to the tragic feel of this story. Overall this series separated itself from many of the other series with it's unique storyline and great casting. WONG YAT WAH AS KONG FUNG Once again Felix Wong is casted in the role of a sad and tragic hero. There was special chemistry between him and Barbara Yung developed through "Legend of the Condor Heroes", and it was continued through this series. I would not exaggerate to say that this was one of Felix Wong's better performances. He was very convincing at looking hurt and sad everytime Kong Fung sad Chun Sik Sik. There where many emotional and touching scenes in this series and Felix through his sad facial expressions added to the magic of the moment. He is a master of sad and tragic roles so it is not surprising that he acted so well in this series. It is difficult to fault Felix's acting in this series. He was fluid in the combat scenes. He took on different dispositions very well, looking at times angry, sad, and jealous. The only slight fault was the hair style chosen for Felix made him look a little bit like a sissy with that fringe at the front. I was surprised that they did not change his hairstyle to fit the role when Kong Fung became a respected leader at Ho Tin Moon. However this is hardly Felix's fault.
