1.2 Today I am a Ma'am

A mailboy at WJM calls Mary 'ma'am' and she realizes she's not so young anymore. Rhoda and Mary try to think of some acceptable guys to go out with. Mary plans a small get-together with Howard Arnell (an ex-date) and Rhoda invites Armand Lynton, whom she hit with her car. Howard and Armand show up...and Armand brings his wife along!

1.3 Bess, You is My Daughter Now

Phyllis asks Mary to watch Bess for a few days. Bess likes Mary's so much she doesn't want to go home.

1.4 Divorce Isn't Everything

Mary and Rhoda attend a meeting of the Better Luck Next Time club, a divorcees' club. But they're not divorcees, and the news leaks out quickly.

Trivia: Pat Finley holds the dubious distinction of being the only person to guest-star in two episodes in the same season. A few years later she'd play Bob Hartley's sister Ellen on "The Bob Newhart Show". No Ed Asner in this episode! He must have taken the week off.

1.6 Support Your Local Mother

Rhoda's mother comes to visit her, but Rhoda refuses to see her. She stays with Mary and finally meets up with Rhoda on her way to the airport.

1.7 Toulouse-Lautrec is One of My Favorite Artists

Renowned author Eric Matthews does an interview at WJM. He and Mary hit it off and he dedicates his book to her.

1.8 The Snow Must Go On

WJM has a partial power loss, and is unable to broadcast the election results. Ted is forced to "wing it" on camera and spends about six hours broadcasting the results, "Turner 85, Mitchell 23".

Rhoda's beau is really more interested in Mary.

1.10 Assistant Wanted, Female

Mary hires Phyllis on at the newsroom, and things run amok when Phyllis does nothing but goof off and meddle in others' projects.

Mary's getting audited, and the tax man gets a crush on her.

Trivia: This episode was originally written for Bob Newhart, who passed on the role as Brand, the stuttering accountant. Paul Sand's wonderfully funny performance would not be forgotten; Jim Brooks and Allan Burns created "Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers" for him. Sadly, Sand's sitcom didn't survive, but Newhart's (created by David Davis and Lorenzo Music) certainly did.


1.12 Anchorman Overboard

Ted's invited to speak at a club meeting of Phyllis', and realizes he can't do public speaking.

Mary is offered a higher-paying job and prepares to leave WJM, but Lou steps in and matches the salary she was offered.

Lou and Edie won't be coming to Mary's for dinner. Lou dodges the invitation, then Mary calls Edie and finds out that they've separated. Then they get back together, for a few more years.

Ted hasn't used up his vacation time, and his substitute anchor makes the ratings soar.

Trivia: This episode was to serve as a pilot for a series starring Bill Daily as the ignorant policician Pete Peterson. The network promptly passed, but signed him to start work on "The Bob Newhart Show" as Howard Borden the befuddled flight navigator neighbor of Bob and Emily. Isabel Sanford, whose acting career began about 30 years before turning to TV, and who would become immortalized as Louise "Weezy" Jefferson on "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons", makes a brief appearance in this episode.


Season 3, 1972-1973


3.1 The Good-Time News

Mary's in charge of designing a new concept for the News, and now Ted is forced to share the stage with another anchorman.
