Little things that make me go hmmm....
April, 1999
Just wondering what happened to that invention called a phone. Did Sykes really have to drive over to RJ's apartment to ask questions? Couldn't he have just got on the phone and asked RJ to come down for more questioning? No, not in Jilly's world. Jill is the queen of Stupid Plot Devices. How else was Sykes going to see RJ's luggage sitting in the hallway?
As much as I abhor the violent state I think OLTL has become, I can't say I didn't enjoy watching RJ punch Sykes. I watched this episode with my daughter and son and they cheered RJ on. In fact they made me rewind it just so they could see it again. How Sykes didn't see it coming is beyond me...RJ's fist was coming from a mile away. Well not to belabor the point...we did enjoy it.
At the time though I thought how clever of RJ. Of course I think RJ is clever anyway, so why was I surprised? Well because of the writing these days...everyone has been dumbed down so horribly that I was barely recognizing the citizens of Llanview, not to mention RJ recently. Anyway, back to what I was getting to - how clever of RJ to get the attention steered away from the fact that he had packed his bags and was going to skip town. Punch Sykes and get arrested for assault. Loved it.

April, 1999 RJ Punches Sykes
RJ answers the door to Sykes, "Oh great, I was starting to
missing you."
"Yea, me too. I need to ask you a few more questions." RJ backs up and lets Sykes in. Sykes
walks in and sees Tea, "What are you doing here, counselor?" RJ chimes in, "Go ahead, make his
day." Tea responds, "We had some unfinished business." Sykes, "Really?" Sykes then turns to
RJ and notices RJ's luggage on the floor, "Nice luggage. You going somewhere? I thought I
told ou not to leave town." "Well, who said I was." Sykes: "I think you better come down to the
station house with me." RJ replies as he raises his fist, "Well maybe I can help you out," then
punches Sykes.
The scene is now at the Police Station. Dorian is there looking for the commissioner and Hank has
just walked out of Bo's office when he sees RJ handcuffed, "Now what?" RJ replies, "Well, he couldn't
get me for arson and he knows it. So I thought I'd be helpful. Let him get me for assault."
Hank upset, "RJ why don't you do yourself a favor and just keep you mouth shut until I hear the
facts." "Whic of course you can only tet from them, right Brother?"
Sykes: "I went to his place to question him about the fire and I found him with his bags packed.
Probably on the way to the airport. So what do you think that says?"
RJ: "That doesn't say squat. the airport is your assumption. As far as you know I was putting
my winter wardrobe in storage." "Sure you were. You were fleeing arrest." "How could that be,
I hadn't hit you yet." "You set that fire endangering innocent lives and I'm going to prove it."
RJ: "Oh well, I'm sure that sounds very impressive but you dont' have either of the things you
need - evidence or a confession." Tea interjects to Sykes, "I'll get something for that lip."
In the meantime Dorian is watching what is going on, "Oh excuse me, are you going to administer
to this man? This so called officer of the law. this is ridiculous. I mean he threw RJ in jail
when he knew that RJ and I were both innocent. And tell us who are you protecting these days? Which
one of your pyschopathic girlfriends?"
RJ: "Look Dorian, just...just leave it alone. I'm here because I hit him."
Dorian: "Who could blame you. I'd love to hit him myself."
Hank: "You know the reason for that, RJ?" "What's to tell? He's been going crazy trying to
arrest me for something, so I thought, you know, I'd make his day."
Hank: "Look, why don't you keep the flip remarks for something else and tell me the truth?"
RJ: "Well that was it Henry. Can't help it you don't like my style."
Hank frustrated, "Your style is nothing but sheer self-destruction. I'm sick of watching it, I'm
sick of trying to stop it." "Well, who asked you to?"
Hank: "RJ, listen, I've been working real hard to believe you didn't torch Indigo but you're
making it real difficult. Now why would you try to skip out of town, huh? Why would you work so
hard to put yourself back behind bars? Do you want to explain that?"
RJ: "Would it change your opinion? Would it help you understand. I mean, you've never been here,
Henry. You've never felt this heat, you've never lost a thing. So what can I say to you that
could possibly make you understand where I'm coming from? Now, I will answer all your questions
in court, not before."
RJ is then taken to his cell and Dorian follows but not before she looks at Sykes and shakes
her head in disgust. Sykes stops and asks Dorian just where does she think she is going and
Dorian tells him she is going to be with her friend. |
