August and September 1998/What looked like a promising story ended keeping RJ on backburner status.

Little Things that make me go hmmm...
September 21, 1998
I am surprised that RJ was on again today. I thought it would be a week before we wondered what would happen to him; but no I was able to see him go to Max for an alibi. Are these writers really listening? I hope so. Unfortunately the scene was too short, but at least I was able to witness RJ sweating his predicament and that is a lot more than PTB had been giving us before."
September 21, 1998

RJ walks into Max's home and sees Max passed out from the sleeping herbs that Blair had given him. RJ is trying to wake Max up; he needs Max's help.

Max replies that he thought that he would be the last person RJ would come to for help. RJ is said it would be but it is also the best place to come right now.

Max says to RJ that if didn't know better he would think that RJ needs an alibi; RJ tells him that he does and that Drew has been killed and Cassie has been shot; and that they are trying to pin it on him.

Max doesn't know what he can do; and RJ tells him that he needs the receipts for the night of the mugging. Max has to confirm that yes it was RJ's signature on the receipts and that Max witnessed RJ's signature.

Little Things that make me go Hmmmm...

Week of 9/14/98 -- I just loved this week aside from the dumbing down of RJ. Street savvy RJ, who is on probation, is going to pick up the gun and shoot it. Yeah uh huh, right. Most ex-cons that are on probation will run the other way when something is going down like it did on the docks. An Ex-con isn't going to be anywhere near the crime scene just to prevent what is happening to RJ. Well RJ couldn't have said it better, when he said he was a fool for picking up the gun.
Am I surprised or upset that Dorian lied? NO, that's Dorian. I know I would be if it were anyone but Dorian; I don't think Dorian knows how to tell the truth until she has to. I am just not sure why she is afraid to admit that she was having Kevin followed; she certainly let everyone know how she feels about Cassie going back to Kevin. Cassie always gets upset with her mother for something, so why should this be different. Dorian never likes the man that Cassie is involved with so who is she trying to keep this from? Mel? I don't think so; Mel may not like what Dorian is up to but he always forgives her. I am puzzled until I start thinking about how it is another SPT to get RJ arrested.
As usual Timothy did a great job with what he was given. He never disappoints me. I loved all his scenes especially with Detective West when they were in the interrogation room alone. He made her look good. TDS looked like he was having a good time; he knows he is innocent.
My favorite moment though was when RJ spoke up for his brother when the detective said she hadn't figured out who the good guys were yet. Then again later when he thanked Hank for being there for him.
I also liked how he spoke to Sykes; RJ wasn't going to back down.
I have been upset with this new writing crew and EP, but this has to be one of the best brother scenes between RJ and Hank that I have seen since they have come to town. They had set aside the past and were dealing with the present situation. On the docks when RJ told Hank that he knew where this was going; although Hank looked at RJ like RJ getting railroaded wouldn't happen, he did listen to his brother and assured his brother that that wouldn't happen. Also, for once Hank wasn't running after Bo; he was there for his brother. And for once RJ wasn't being belligerent with the support that Hank was giving him; he was truly thankful to have "big brother Hank" there and he told him so. After all, Rachel isn't there for RJ anymore, so Hank is all the family he has. I am looking forward to more Gannon Family bonding between these two brothers.
Thanks.

September 14 thru 18
Dorian gets a call from RJ, who has followed Kevin to Llanfair:
Dorian: "It's about time I heard from you, where are you?
RJ: "I followed Kevin; Kevin's at Llanfair, he just followed Barbara in."
Dorian: "I knew it. Did you get pictures?
: "No, no Dorian I didn't get pictures.
Dorian: "Why not? I need you to get pictures."
RJ: "Well Dorian, I'm trying to blend in. I didn't want to blow my cover."
The next scene is with Dorian and RJ at the Opening of the Art Gallery; Dorian says she needs pictures, and RJ informs her that he needs a good camera for that, and that those cameras are expensive. Dorian hands RJ a check and tells RJ that his duties go much further than catering. RJ tells Dorian he will be like Kevin's second skin. Later Kevin gets a call from Munk who tells Kevin he has tip on the mugger; Kevin is to meet him on the docks. The set up is Kevin standing on the docks waiting for Munk, while Bebe is dressed as a mugger and is hiding in the dark; RJ, who has tailed Kevin to the docks is also hiding on the other side of Kevin. Bebe raises her gun aiming at Kevin when Cassie arrives, and right behind her is Drew. Drew sees Bebe pointing the gun at Kevin and jumps to push them out of the way. Bebe shoots; Kevin, Cassie and Drew all fall to the ground. RJ comes from where he was hiding, sees Bebe (only he thinks it is a mugger) and surprises her by yelling her to stop. Bebe drops the gun and runs; RJ runs over, picks up the gun and shoots at her.. The next thing you see is Hank grabbing RJ and throwing him up against the wall:

Hank: "Hey, don't move."
RJ: "Get off me man, I heard a shot, I went after the shooter. I am not the guy you are looking for."
"Put the gun on the ground."

RJ: "Here, here take it."
Hank hands the gun to Sykes. There is a call for help in the background, Hank looks at RJ then Hank and Bo go to see the voice is calling for help. Bo and Hank see Kevin with Cassie, and Hank says he will go call 911.

Meantime Sykes and nucop Detective West are questioning RJ.
Sykes: "What are you doing with a weapon, you're still on probation?"
RJ: "I heard a shot, I saw someone, a figure running; he dropped the gun and like a fool I picked it up. I got off a couple shots. I must've hit him, I knicked him at least."

Sykes: "Did you get a good look at him?"
RJ: "He was wearing a ski mask."
Sykes: "Detective West hold him as a material witness; also we're going to need to run a residue test on his hand. I'll check on Bo."
RJ: "Now wait a minute, I told you I fired the thing. I was just trying to stop the guy."
Hank looks at Detective West: "Detective West, how come we haven't met; I thought I knew all the detectives?"
Detective West: "Commissioner just hired me; he's overhauling the whole department. Excuse me, I gotta bag this.(referring to the gun)
RJ: "Come on, you know I handled it, my prints are on it; I told you I fired it trying to ..." RJ looks at Hank worried "I know where this is going, I don't like it; I don't like the way Sykes and West are looking at me."
Hank: "Listen RJ, no one is going to get railroaded here, alright? But, I do have a question. What are doing down here on the docks in the first place?"
Sykes returns to the scene as RJ explains to Hank.
Hank: "You're catering the Gallery Opening for Lindsey and Dorian, so why are you down here?"
Sykes: "Yeah, that is exactly what I want to know."
RJ: "It's all part of the job. Dorian hired me to do. I was to follow Kevin Buchanan."
Hank: "Why?"
RJ: "Well, she doesn't trust the guy. She's got it in for him; look she was paying me (as he shows them the check that Dorian gave to him earlier).
Hank: "Yeah, yeah, she paid you for the catering..."
RJ: "No, no. this is the 2nd installment; same as the first. Now, you saw the food, little pricey don't you think?"
Sykes: "Don't give me the run around."
RJ: "I told you and I'm telling you again. I was down here in the employ of Miss Dorian Lord Hayes. Ask her."
Sykes: "Yeah, I will ask her; first thing I want to know everything you can tell me about the alleged shooter..."
RJ: "Alleged?! Alleged? He was standing right htere in the shadows. He dropped the damn gun; trace it, then you got him."

Back at the police station, Detective West and RJ are sitting at the table in an interrogation room.
RJ: "So just how long you going to hold me without charges?"
Detective West: "I thought you weren't going to talk?"
RJ: "Well, I'm not going to answer questions, but I'll ask all I like."
Detective West: "Nervous?"
RJ: "Nervous? Sure I'm nervous for you. I heard how you spoke to my brother, The D.A." RJ then laughs.
Detective West: "I answer to the commissioner, not the D.A. I'm new hear at Llanview Police Department. I'm still sorting out the good guys from the bad."
RJ: "Well, you're not much of a detective if you can't see that Hank's one of the good guys."
Detective West: "Unlike his brother. You're on probation. This looks like your third strike - you get caught at the murder scene holding the gun. You're gonna fry."
RJ: "Come on, can't you see Dorian is just looking for a stooge?"
Detective West: "...and here you are; signed, sealed and delivered."
RJ smiling: "When did you say I can go?"
Detective West: "You'll be here overnight, maybe longer, so relax.
RJ: "Come on, Detective West. Now do I look like a hired gun to you?"
Detective West: "Until you can come up with an alibi for the night of the muggings, you're not going anywhere."
Later... Detective West: "Why don't you run down for me again. What happened on the docks?"
Hank walks in: "You want to continue questioning this man he should have his attorney present."
Detective West: "He doesn't have an attorney."
Hank: "Look RJ - I'm going to give you the bad news first. Dorian's scared. Why, I don't know but she's not backing up your statements."
RJ: "Well, I sure hope the good news was worth waiting for."
Hank: "How would you like to lawyer up with Rappaport?"
RJ: "Sam." Sam: "Hey, what's going on; you're asking one heck of a favor to pull me out of bed at a time like this."
Detective West: "The DA need more than a favor, he needs a miracle."
Sam: "why, what are the charges?"
Detective West: "I'm still drawing up a lit. So far we have a murdered cop and a badly wounded young woman who happens to be the daughter of one of the most influential women in town."
Sam: "What?"
Hank: "Cassie Carpenter and Drew Buchanan."
Hank and RJ are standing at the door of the interrogation room as RJ says to Hank: "Well you really came through for me this time, Hank. Thanks."
Hank: "Yeah well, you know, Sam Rappaort is damn good at what he does...I just hope he sticks with us on this."
RJ: "Why wouldn't he?"
Hank: "Oh, relax. It's got nothing to do with you...it's just that Todd's case goes to court in a couple weeks. Sam is going to have his hands full. Yeah, speak of the man." (as Sam and Detective West walk in the room)"
Detective West: "You're free to go."

RJ: "I knew you would see it my way."
Detective West: "for now Gannon, you'll be back."
Sam: "I'll pretend I didn't hear that."
RJ: "How did you pull this off?" Sam: "Detective West is a fine investigator. Once I pointed out to her that the evidence against you is wholly circumstantial, she saw the light."
Detective West: "Don't leave town." RJ chuckling: "I'd miss you too much."
Hank: "Good work Sam." Sam: "No problem."
Hank: "So, listen you ready to talk some strategy?"
Sam: "No actually after hearing about Cassie and Drew there is somebody I have to talk to. Goodnight!"

Little Things that make me go Hmmmm...

9/3/98 -- Very good show today!!! I just love Dorian and RJ again. They are so much fun to watch. It was so nice to see RJ back at Club Indigo but darn, does the place always have to be so empty? I would have liked to have seen Lindsey and RJ have some sort of exchange; but maybe we will soon. I also liked RJ and Mel together. Is it only apparent to TDS's fans that the man shines with whomever he does scenes with; he always shine, stands out, and I enjoy watching this talented man.

My biggest complaint is that like I had suspected, RJ is doing all his "private eye" work off screen. Wouldn't it be great if we could see Kevin from RJ's perspective?

9/3/98 -- Dorian shows up at Club Indigo; RJ presents Dorian with his bill. She is flabbergasted at his prices but he tells her that the price also includes his "Private I" duties and he was sure that she wanted to hide that part of the bill. Dorian agrees but asks how does she know if she is getting her monies worth and asks for an update. RJ fills her in on the happenings of one, Kevin Buchanan.

Dorian is disappointed but is sure that Kevin will cheat on Cassie again. As Dorian is ready to pay RJ, Mel walks in. He inquires what Dorian is doing there; and she tells him that she has hired RJ to do the catering for the Art Gallery Opening. Dorian exits by saying that she needs to speak to RJ's chef; after Dorian leaves Mel wants to ask RJ something; RJ asks if Mel wants to know about catering too. No Mel wants to know if RJ could lead him to a fence; RJ says that the best person is Monk but that he probably wouldn't speak to Mel. Mel tells RJ that he wouldn't reveal his source as a newspaperman and requested that RJ call him. Club Indigo was busy today! RJ leaves to make the call and Lindsey walks in. She is talking to Mel when Dorian returns; Dorian stands in the background to watch the animated conversation going on between Mel and Lindsey, and RJ offers her a group rate to follow Mel, too. Dorian lightly smacks RJ in the abdomen with her purse. (It was hilarious!!!!) You had to see it. While Dorian and Lindsay are talking Monk shows up; he is nervous and is not happy that RJ got him there on false pretenses. Mel and Monk have their conversation.
Little Things that make me go Hmmmm...

8/27/98 -- A month to the day since RJ had been seen; amazing. I don't suppose it has anything to do with the fact that Max is also back in town. Are the writers so lame, so non-creative that they couldn't possibly have written for RJ without some tie to Max? I know that Max and RJ didn't interact, but still, it seems too coincidental.

I loved seeing RJ and Dorian together; this could be the beginning of good things. Kind of like back in the day when RJ and Alex were scheming -- Dorian is the ultimate schemer and with RJ as her cohort, I can only imagine what these two could do.

I loved everything about today; the way Hank came by to visit RJ, no animosity, no hidden agenda, and they actually had a beer together, joked and laughed together. I loved it.

Hmmmm- does anyone wonder what happened to RJ's 1000 hours of community service? I know where I work a level-of-effort month is about 146 to 151 hours -- at that rate it would have taken RJ months, like 8 to fulfill his community service duties. The man must have lived at the community center, and they counted the hours that he slept there. No just kidding -- don't get me wrong because I am glad we didn't have some lame story at the community center -- although seeing RJ more often would have been nice.

I am not going to hold my breath and hope for more but rumor has it that RJ will be tied in with the Drew murder. Why? Is he the only man that they can ever question in town?

8/27/98 RJ is back; as he was on the phone, frustrated by the promotional goodies that his partner Max purchased, Hank walks in. Hank tells RJ that he has heard from Ricki; and that he tells him that RJ's letters help Rachel get through her time. They sat down and had a BEER together; joked around with each other, and even agreed they would visit Rachel together.

Hank leaves, and in walks Dorian. Dorian has a proposition for RJ; she tells him that she would like him of her latest venture and that she and Lindsay are partners in an art gallery. Dorian would like RJ to cater the opening, plus provide the music. RJ doesn't believe that is all that Dorian wants. She admits that there is more; she wants him to spy on Kevin Buchanan. Kevin has cheated on her daughter once and believe that he will again. RJ can't believe that she is asking him to spy. He tells her that he will think about it; she tells him that if he accepts her offer that business will pick up at Club Indigo -- all she has to do is put in a word in all the right places. RJ accepts.

Bo walks in greets RJ as RJ walks away from him.
