The string-vested street philosopher from
Govan, Glasgow, played by Gregor
Fisher, made his debut in Naked Video
sketches before spinning off into a series via the 1988 pilot
episode/one-off special Rab C.
Nesbitt Seasonal Greet transmitted in Scotland and
later repeated on the network in 1989 . Our Rab was a work-shy,
foul-mouthed drunkard who spent most of his time boozing,
fighting and generally getting into trouble with the establishment.
Given the slightest excuse, he expounds his own philosophy on life
to anyone brave enough to listen. Operating on a perpetually full
tank of alcohol, Rab C. Nesbitt ranted
and raved in his ubiquitous Glaswegian accent about life and the
Establishment in between raucous squabbles with wife Mary, played by Elaine C. Smith,
son, wee Burney
(Series 1-3), played by Eric
Cullen until his death in 1996 and Gash Nesbitt played by Andrew Fairlie.
Painfully, perceptively funny (if you could master the heavy
accent! that is) Rab C. Nesbitt together
with his lugubrious, womanizing drinking partner Jamesie
Cotter played by Tony
Roper, took the 80's British sitcom
struggling and squirming into the 90's setting a new gutter
standard for British television.
Written by Ian Pattison
and produced and directed by
Colin Gilbert the show continues to be
popular with the British viewing public and 8 series have appeared to
date between 1990-1999, some 52 x 30 minute episodes were
made including 4 specials. The first 6 episode series appeared at
a time when Glasgow was enjoying a period of renaissance under
the banner of European City of Culture in 1990 (pronounced cul'cha
in Glasgow speak). Following the success of this first series on
the back of his earlier cameo role, further series have
appeared during '92, '93, '94, '96, '97, '98 and most recently in '99, the last four without
wee Burney.
You either loved him or hated him. Having personally spent 3
years or so of my life working in Glasgow during the period when
Rab reached the height of his popularity, I can recognise his
humour in just about every other drunk you bumped into on a
Saturday night, downtown Glasgow. The salt of the earth,
extremely good-hearted and well meaning but a tad rough around
the edges and with a breath that could kill at 20 paces!
