In November, the cockle-burs (pronounced in quick Southern-style as something like cuckaburrs) are dried and ready to find wool. Or cotton. Or even hair, especially on a furry dog or other mammal. The dunes along the Cahaba are fertile ground apparently for this plant. |
There are a few pull-offs along the dirt road which leads into the park. Currently trails are being blazed and improved along the lake, where swampland supports Water Tupelos, Cypress, and even alligators! Step lively and keep your eyes peeled... The new trails are well-marked and will take you deep into the Perry County woodlands. This is central Alabama at its most wild. |
