This is actually just the eroded edge of a dune right along the riverbed. In the water itself, smooth stones mix with the sand to form the bed. A bend in the Cahaba forms Barton's Beach, as sand from upstream is carried out of the normal flow when the river floods. Opposite the beach lies a steeper bank which exposes the red clay which is most typical of Alabama soil.
