Quite near the new softball field and new swimming pool at the Student Rec Center on the Alabama campus, amidst what in the summer is the world's lushest field of crimson clover, stands a majestic landmark: perhaps the oldest water towers in the Tuscaloosa area. Construction is beginning around the concrete tower, however, as Capstone Village, a retirement community on the edge of campus, begins to develop. Whether the aged vessel will continue to be considered an landmark or an eyesore once the bulldozers and then residents arrive is hard to know. |
UPDATE: Aug. 8, 2003 Almost as soon as I published these pictures to the web, the announcement came that the tower will be dismantled. Click HERE to read the Tuscaloosa News article and see their photo of the tower as well as another more modern tower off along the horizon in picture. HINT: T-News photos are thumbnails in the articles, but if you use Netscape to browse you can right-click on the photographs then click the hyperlink to the pic itself. When the screen has loaded, put your cursor at the end of the URL in the address bar and change the numeric value at the end of the line (usually 180) to 1180. This blows the photographs up to something closer to their original size. |
