William Robert Clark and Susie Victoria Martin |
William Robert Clark was born July 4, 1887 in Caldwell County, NC. He was the son of William McKinley Clark and Mary Jane "Polly" Decker. On February 2, 1907, he married Susie Victoria Martin, daughter of Alfred B. Martin and Martha Ann Anthony. Records show the family as using the spelling Clark and Clarke in early days. Eventually, William Robert Clark dropped the e from the spelling of his name. William was affectionately known to all as "Rob." Rob and Susie Clark had a total of eleven children. Only five of those children survived to adulthood. They were James Martin Clark (b. Feb. 21, 1916), Emily Ruth Clark (b. Apr. 6, 1918), Martha Mae Clark (b. May 14, 1920), Margaret Louise Clark (b. Jan. 11, 1922), and Edward Lee Clark (b. Apr. 5, 1924.) |

About 1925, Rob built a home on Underdown Ave. in Lenoir, NC for his family. They lived the rest of their life in that home. The house was close to the top of a hill surrounded by furniture factories. Bernhardt Furniture and Lenoir Pad Co. are a couple of those companies. There was only one road leading in and out of their neighborhood. Because of the factories and railroad tracks around the hill, no other roads could be built. The church they attended, South Lenoir Methodist Church, was only three doors up and across the street. Behind and beside their house was a huge garden that Rob tended along with working his job at the factory. At the backside of the garden started the most beautiful woods I have ever seen. The woods reached all the way down the side of the hill to the railroad tracks. It was not overgrown but more like a forrest. It had the prettiest ferns and wild things growing that one could imagine. It had to be the most peaceful and serene place in the world. Also, there were pigs in a pigpen and of course, an outhouse sitting at the beginning of the path that led through the garden and into the woods.
Their neighbors were Claude and Jennie Mae Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Francis, The Storys, Mr. and Mrs Duncan, Johnsie Goforth, and even their own son and daughter, James Martin and Margaret Louise moved into homes on the same street.
