"The Spring"

Joe's most recent full-length feature work (so far!) was the TV movie "The Spring". It was based on a now out-of-print book by Clifford Irving. "The Spring" is a supernatural tale about a father and son on a road trip in the remote Pacific Northwest. They stumble upon a town called "Springdale" where everyone seems to be acting strangely and suspiciously toward any outsiders. Soon, the father is drawn into the town's mysterious secret: It holds a fountain of youth where everyone stays young -- for a price. Although about average as a film by TV movie standards (IMO), Joe once again did a great job playing a regular kid. (And shows he's a pretty good skateboarder too!)

Reviews & Comments

"The most meaningful moments actually come from the teenager Nick, believably played by Joseph Cross, who, in a throwaway line, sums what's missing in Springville: 'I like old people.'"
-- Steven Oxman, Daily Variety, January 13, 2000

"Young Cross gives a natural performance..."
-- Steven Linan, Los Angeles Times<, January 15, 2000

"With a cast that's a cut above your average TV-movie roster, 'The Spring' is a legitimately spooky sleeper..."
-- Bruce Fretts, Entertainment Weekkly, January 14, 2000
