Tarragona, Spain, Aug. 3, 2002 — The aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) pulls in to Tarragona, Spain, for a short port visit while on her transit home. John F. Kennedy and her embarked Carrier Air Wing Seven (CVW-7) are returning home after being relieved by USS George Washington (CVN 73) supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
The safety checker indicates a "thumbs up" as an F-14 Tomcat fighter from "Jolly Rogers" of Fighter Squadron One Zero Three (VF-103) roars down the flight deck of USS George Washington (CVN 73) during launch. During the launch, the Tomcat will attain a speed of about 152 knots (175 mph) over a distance of 250 feet in just 2½ seconds. George Washington, her embarked Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW 17), and her battle group are on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Naval Station, Norfolk, Va., Aug. 15, 2002 — A team of tugs push USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) towards Pier 14 at the Naval Station, Norfolk, Va., as family members and friends of locally-stationed squadron personnel wait on the pier. The carrier will disembark the locally-stationed personnel before continuing its journey to Mayport, Fla., where it is homeported. John F. Kennedy and her embarked Carrier Air Wing Seven (CVW-7) are completing a six-month deployment to the Medeterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Throughout the course of the deployment, John F. Kennedy safely navigated 160 days at sea covering 69,050 miles of ocean and completed more than 9,100 aircraft traps/recoveries. Carrier Air Wing Seven aircraft flew a total of 2,599 day and night missions over Afghanistan in support of coalition forces, delivering more than 64,000 pounds of ordnance on Taliban and Al Qaeda targets.
