I'll say this: that kid can really dig a hole

In robot mode; about to show why he's the leader.

WEDGE

PRICE POINT/SIZE: DELUXE
DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED
FUNCTION: AUTOBOT BULLDOZER
MOTTO: "I'll shove the bad guys out of the way."

'The other construction Autobots look up to Wedge as their leader, even though he's still young. He's a natural leader in the making with his take-charge attitude and revved-up energy. He can be reckless and make mistakes but will never jeopardize his friends, and is always there to help them. He bulldozes into battle with double beam guns.'

Wedge is described as the young leader of the Build team, which coincides nicely with his Car Robots release as Build Boy. His toy also reflects his young design; though released as a deluxe in the Robots in Disguise toy line Wedge is only the size of a basic.

VEHICLE MODE:
Though small, as already stated, wedge is one of the better members of the build team. In vehicle mode he is an orange bulldozer with light and dark grey detailing on his bonnet and dark grey treads with orange detail on the side, the shovel is a lighter orange that matches the panels on his underside and the two - presumably - exhaust pipes either side of the front of the vehicle that are attached to a dark grey part hidden behind the shovel, on the top of his cab is one great big Autobot symbol. The colour scheme is attractive in that it doesn't go over the top or try to incorporate too many colours. The theme of the build team seems to have been monochrome and I must say I'm pleased with the move; At least we don't have to put up with anything as ghastly as G2 Bruticus.
There's very little in the way of eye candy in this mode aside from his transparent windows, though that doesn't matter a great deal.

Wedge is light and has a low centre of gravity in this mode, which allows his four small wheels to roll well on hard, flat surfaces. Anything else is a bit of a problem as the small, tread-less wheels get lost in carpet and tile, and he more slides along linoleum than rolls. Mine also has a tendency to swerve to the right for some reason, I don't know if that's universal but it's something I've noticed.

TRANSFORMATION (ROBOT MODE):
Transforming Wedge is not the task that some other "advanced" level transformers are -  >cough<Sideburn>cough< - in fact it's more fun than a lot of the other toys in RiD. Wedge seems to me to have been designed with Generation 1 in mind, his transformation is simple enough so as not to be frustrating, but complex enough so as not to be boring. You start off by opening the shovel and pulling the treads down underneath the body of the vehicle, detach the dark grey thing behind the shovel and set it aside. Grasp the front of the vehicle at the sides just in front of the cab and separate the sections, then spin the legs around, extend the feet and straighten the legs, bring the arms back around and pull the upper arm up at the shoulder to expose the elbow. Pull down the light orange panel on his back and spin out his head, then close the panel. Wedge can either be holding his weapon by folding the two barrels to the opposite side from the handle, or he can store it on his back by clipping the handle onto the hole in the light orange panel on his back.

ROBOT MODE:
As mentioned earlier; Wedge is tiny for a deluxe, in fact there are some basics that tower over him (Gas Skunk, for instance). This is a small area of gripe, since you don't want to be paying $25 for something that should, by all rights, be costing you $13. However when I eventually did bite the bullet and bring Wedge home I was very quickly happy that I did; Wedge is the most fun I've had in a very long time with a transformer, he may be small, but damn is he cool. Wedge is the sort of toy that you don't realise you're transforming until you've transformed him - everything seems to be mnemonic to the point where your fingers know what to do and your brain can run speed lines and theme music through your mind while you do it.

In robot mode Wedge retains his same colour scheme; his legs are detailed with light and dark grey, his arms bare the treads of his vehicle mode and have light grey fists detailed on them, the face is light grey inside a stylised orange helmet with two shovels on either cheek, his eyes are green which is about the only new colour offered. He looks a little plump with the great big vehicle mode cab making up his entire torso, but I suppose that adds to the theory that he's a kid. There isn't much in the way of etched detail on Wedge, though his weapon has quite a bit of it.

Wedge is articulated at the ankle (kinda), knee, pelvis, shoulder (2 joints), elbow and neck. Also, if you fold down the plug on his back his waist can turn, but I think this is more of a happy by product of his design. one problem with his design is that he lacks any significant inner heel which is detrimental to his ability to balance. He can still do his thing in a lot of different ways, but he'll never stand on one foot.

Wedge is, in my impression, the best of the build team. If only because his transformation is the most original and the most fun of their number. While I shy away of saying he was completely worth his price tag I daresay that once you get over the amount you paid for him (should take about three minutes) you won't be disappointed with your purchase.
