Getting the cash back

Generally, this is what will happen if you have your gems and your store is still open. We have yet to hear of a store refusing to buy back its own gems, though we have heard of stores being less than polite in doing it.

As we do not have any experience with a store that is open and refuses to pay, we are of little help. You can certainly argue with the store that, under Thai law, they have to pay you at least 70% back within 30 days. They may be smart enough to realize that this applies only to JewelFest members, but it's worth a try.

Your best bet in this case is to turn over the receipts and gems to Internal Trade. They are usually succesful at negotiating refunds with stores (we are told that the stores have more to fear from the Ministry of Commerce than some individual tourist), so at this point it is your best option. Probably because it is your only option, short of legal action, which will require a much longer stay in Bangkok. Note, however, that Internal Trade is only helpful if the store is still open, so be quick to get to their offices, and insist they help you out now (always with that winning smile).
