"Bangkok Jewelry scam victims seek refunds
Foreign tourists who say they have been cheated by jewelry scams
operating in Bangkok have formed an organization to lobby in an effort to get
their money back. But an officer from the Thai comsumer protection board, Vara Nipitsukarn, said there was nothing he could do to help them to gain refunds for overpriced jewelry sold to them by a shop that has since closed. The tourists are calling their organization the Thai Gem Scam Group.
The scheme, which has been practiced on unsuspecting tourists for
years, generally involves luring visitors to a jewelry store where they are
told that they can make a huge profit by buying gems in
Thailand and selling them once they arrive home. (AFP)"
