To the editor:

Dear Sir:

We applaud the comments of Deputy Prime Minister Korn Dabbaransi, as reported in your May 8, 2003 article ("Asset clamp threat for gem stores" as posted online at http://www.bangkokpost.com/080503_News/08May2003_news05.html).

Besides recognizing the inherent challenges faced by a scammed tourist in pursuing legal action against the scam stores, this initiative has the potential to severely curtail the activities of a small group of rogue jewellery shops. A proper enforcement of the assets seizure law not only reduces the resources of these scam stores to open and close at will, but will also provide the necessary resources for a restitution fund for scammed tourists.

The fact remains that these scam stores, although few in number, cause a damage to Thailand's reputation that is completely out of proportion with their numbers. The Thai government is correct in taking action against these stores and our Group wholeheartedly supports this initative.
