USS SPRINGFIELD, CLG-7, (Guided Missile Light Cruiser) V.I. 1968
I served aboard the SPRINGFIELD with a ComSec Detachment on a joint
NATO exercise to the Virgin Islands and vicinity in 1968. This exercise
consisted of a large force of ships from various NATO countries, and was mainly involved with
amphibious assault landings and war games on and around Vieques Island in the Caribbean.
Liberty was at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands during
this cruise. Below are some photos of that cruise, and other photos I have of
the SPRINGFIELD.

THE USS SPRINGFIELD DURING WORLD WAR II.
The USS Springfield, CL 66, fought in the final year of World War II against
Japan in the Pacific with Task Group 58.3 and Task Group 38.3 of the U.S. Third
Fleet. Her primary mission during this time was protection of our aircraft
carriers, which were constantly being attacked by Japan's last ditch war
effort, the Kamikazes. She was part of Crusier Division 17, which included
the other Light Cruisers USS Wilkes-Barre, CL 103, USS Astoria, CL 90,
and the USS Pasadena, CL 65. This division was affectionately known as the
"WASP" division, the name derived from the first letter of each of the
ships names. The Springfield was involved in the Invasion of Okinawa and
the "Home Islands Raids" of Japan; and was the first United States cruiser to
enter Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender ceremonies in late August 1945.
She earned two battle stars for her service during World War II.
