What am I working on now? A film script, but not from one of my books. I think it's a mistake to adapt yourself. This is a trilogy called THE CHANGES, by the great Peter Dickinson - a strangely prophetic science-fiction or fantasy story first published thirty years ago. Will there be a movie of HDM? I haven't the faintest idea. I shan't have anything to do with it if htere is; "take the money and run" are the wisest words of advice ever spoken on the subject of writers and films. Casting: I like the idea of Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter, myself, and the voice of James Earl Jones as Iorek Byrnison. Further adventures, and what will be in THE BOOK OF DUST. I'm not going to go into that in too much detail, partly because I don't know, and partly because even if I did, the time to tell you about it would be when I'd finished it. I really don't feel able to talk about anything before I've written it; I know some writers do, and I even know a man who sends out chapters of his current book to different schools and asks the kids what they think of them and alters them in line with what they say - but that's not for me. I have to huddle over my work and curl my shoulder around it when anyone comes in the room and lock it up when I've finished for the day. So you won't be surprised to find me being coy about it. But I will say that I want The B of D to be richly illustrated, and to be driven by narrative rather than explanation. There you are. What am I doing now? My doctor tells me that my body has gone on strike, so I'm doing very little. In fact answering these queries is the only thing I've done all day long except swallow pills and read Thomas Harris's Hannibal and Karen Armstrong's A History of God (interesting pairing). I've mentioned the film I'm supposed to be writing; when I've done that I shall do a short book - about the length of my CLOCKWORK - one of the things I call my fairy tales - like The Firework-Maker's Daughter and I Was a Rat, one of those. |
