Temple of Ajanta's     The Cave Temples

This is an entrance to one of the 26 Cave Temples of Ajanta.  This entrance was an entrance to one of the monastery caves.  This is where the monks of the time slept and lived when not working or praying.
All these pictures were taken from the book "Holy Places of the Buddha"  Crystal Mirror Series, Number 9.

These 2 pictures are from cave 19 which was one of the actual temple caves.
The picture of course on the left was the entrance to the temple.  The picture on the right shows the detail worked put into the carvings of these caves.  It is the right corner of cave 19.  You can see the sculptures of the Buddha offering enlightened knowledge and teaching the Dharma in this picture.  This cave was carved and made during the 5th century during the Vakataka period.
