Dave Leonard
The Hurdy-Gurdy Man
Music
Welcome to the Hurdy-Gurdy Man's music page. My name is Dave Leonard, and I have been playing music for over thirty five years, professionally for about twenty years. I perform folk music, particularly Celtic and Olde Tyme mountain style music. I sing the old ballads and folksongs, as well as play dance tunes. My instruments include the fiddle, 5-string banjo, tenor banjo, mandolin, Irish bouzouki, bodhran, mountain dulcimore, Scottish smallpipes and the hurdy-gurdy.
I'm located in central Michigan and have performed throughout the state, both solo and with a band. Currently I am a member of two bands, Peatbog and Morpeth Rant.

Peatbog is a band in which I do a lot of singing and a good amount of instrumentals as well. Back-up is by my good friends Alan and Shelly.
Shelly plays Irish bodhran and bass drum as well as back-up vocals. She also plays bass drum in a pipe and drum band called The Midland Highlanders.
Alan plays guitar and sings back-up. He plays both lead and rhythm. His Taylor guitar has a lovely sound.

Morpeth Rant is more of a dance band where I play fiddle and 5-string banjo mostly. The other members are Bruce, Steve, Heather, Bethany, Bill and Bob. Bruce and Steve both play guitar, both lead and rhythm. Heather and Bethany play fiddle. Bill plays mandolin and Bob plays bass. We play for dances in the tri city area of Michigan.

I also do a lot of solo performances where I sing old ballads and folk songs while accompaning myself with one of my instruments. With the Olde Tyme music, I usually use 5-string banjo (both clawhammer and finger picked) or mountain dulcimore. With Celtic music, I usually use hurdy-gurdy, Irish bouzouki or smallpipes. The droning instruments sound wonderful backing up old folksongs.
