Merrill Mahaffey, born in 1937, is a noted Southwestern landscape artist who paints the open, unpopulated, and rugged landscapes of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. His imagery ranges from postcard-type views of mountains and canyons, to more abstracted studies of jumbled rockslides, to simple but elegant recordings of major public works like Hoover Dam. "Ladore Morning," was painted in his characteristic high-key palette of yellows, tans, pinks, and whites, with pale purple and blue shadows. Mahaffey spends much of his energy on the rhythmic patterns in the colored rock walls, and in the reflections of bodies of water, usually tamed rivers. The paintings, "Shoreline Granite Dells," and "Glen Canyon" show Mahaffey's fascination with the rhythmic patterns of rocks reflecting on water. He paints as a Geologist would, if the Geologist also happened to be a talented artist, as well. The paintings, including "Echo Canyon Park," are unframed -- painted during the period when Mahaffey continued the painting on the sides. They could be framed, however, they would then lose their "float" quality. |

Nature is too marvelous to render exactly, but my job is to make the viewer believe otherwise -- Merrill Mahaffey |
