The play by David Harrower is an adaptation of John Wyndham's classic novel of the same name. It is a story of a community living in a post apocalyptic society in a place known as Waknuk. Their Society consists of only the physically perfect. Animals and plants that do not conform are destroyed, and imperfect babies are placed at the border, to be looked after by the "Fringe" people, mutants who have been banished from Waknuk. Mick Nelson (my co-designer) and I followed the brief from the Director, to give the play a puritanical air, reminiscent of the Salem Witch hunts!

The
set was constructed with wooden frames as in a timber built house to support
panels of lycra for the walls . This lent itself to some wonderful effects,
faces, arms and hands could be pushed into this casting shadows, while
slides were projected on to the material of "prophetic" text
