Morgoth (Melkor): Morgoth was the First Dark Lord during the First Age. However, he was not always evil. He was originally, before the creation of the world, the most powerful of the Ainur (Divine Powers), and when the realm of Arda was created, he lusted for it and envied the creation of the Valar. In his jealousy he destroyed many of their works, such as the Lamps of the Valar (which lit Arda in the beginning of days). After the Valar came to Valinor, which is also called Aman, they decided to make war with Melkor before the coming of the Elves so that the Children of Ilúvatar would not wake in darkness. Melkor was captured and imprisoned in the hall of Mandos, where none can escape. He hated the Elves, for they were the cause of his imprisonment. After ages of capture, he was allowed to roam through Valinor, where he poisoned the hearts of some of the Elves to distrust the Valar. He coveted above all the light of the Silmarils, the jewels which held the unsullied light of Valinor. He later poisoned the two trees that lit Valinor, with the help of Ungoliant, and he stole the three Silmarils, which he set in his crown. He went back to Middle-earth and his stronghold of Angband. The Noldor, Elves who had exiled themselves from Valinor, waged a hopeless war with him. He was eventually destroyed by the Valar in the War of Wrath. He was tossed into the Void, where he shall abide forever. The seeds of evil that he sowed in the hearts of Elves and Men remained until the end of days. Ungoliant: Ungoliant was the horrible spider-like creature that aided Morgoth in the destruction of the two trees of Valinor. She feeds on light and weaves pitch black webs that hid herself and Morgoth as they fled Valinor, after destroying the trees and stealing the Silmarils. She was promised the Silmarils by Morgoth, but he denied them to her. She attacked him, but failed because Morgoth's cries awoke the dormant balrogs, who drove her away. She fled to the mountains that surround Mordor, and there she mated with other spider-like creatures and created offspring. Her offspring included Shelob, the creature that attacked Frodo and Sam in Cirith Ungol. Shelob: Shelob was the last child of Ungoliant, the evil spider who destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor. She dwells in the Mountains of Shadow and feeds on the blood of Elves and Men. Her greatest pleasure is to kill, and she desires death for all others. At times, Sauron feeds her some of his orcs or prisoners. She breeded with other spider-like creatures and her offspring lived in Mirkwood, as told in the Hobbit. During Frodo's quest to to Mount Doom, Gollum betrayed the Hobbits to her. She poisoned Frodo and attacked Sam. Sam defending himself, wounded Shelob with Sting, Frodo's sword. In agony, she crawled back to the gloom of her cave. Sam was the first to injure her, no others of Elves and Men could accomplish this feat. Balrogs: Balrogs were maiar that once lived in Valinor. They were corrupted by Melkor in the beginning of days and became horrible creatures of flame. They carry fear around them and weild whips of flame. Nazgul (Ringwraiths): The Nazgul were once great lords amoung men, three of them were Númenóreans, the race of Men that lived in the western isle of Númenor who were given life spans 3 times as long as that of normal men for their service against Morgoth in the War of Wrath. They were given nine rings of power by Sauron. They became his slaves after he corrupted them through the rings. They are not alive or dead, and they live in the shadows. The Nazgul have poor eyesight, especially in the sun, so they use their sense of smell. They sense and hate all living things. The Nazgul are always drawn to the power of the one ring. Sauron: Before his corruption, Sauron was one of the Maiar of Aulë, the Valar that made the substance of Arda. He became the lieutenant of Morgoth after being corrupted by the dark powers. After the fall of Morgoth, Sauron repented from his evil ways and worked to help Middle Earth recuperate from the evils of the First Dark Lord. But he swiftly turned again to evil and desired to rule the realm of Arda as Morgoth did. He became a shadow of the horrors of Morgoth. He persuaded the Elves of Eregion to try to make Middle Earth rival Valinor. The Elves then made the rings of power. Sauron helped in the making of the seven Dwarvish rings and the nine rings of Men, but he never touched or sullied the three Elven rings. In Mordor he created the one ring to rule all the others. His plans of world domination were soon spoiled when the Last Alliance of Elves and Men defeated him in Mordor. The one ring left the hand of Sauron and passed to Isildur. Sauron searched fervently for the ring. Soon he learned that his precious ring lay in the hands of a hobbit, but he did not suspect that the hobbit would embark on a great quest to destroy the ring. Sauron was destroyed when the ring was unmade on March 25, 3019 T.A. Gollum: Once called Smeagol, Gollum was part of the riverside folk that lived by the Gladden River. HIs race resembled that of the hobbits. His friend Deagol and himself were fishing in the river, when Deagol found the one ring. Smeagol killed Deagol for the ring, and used the excuse that it was it was his birthday to cover up the murder. He was kicked out of his family and he fled to a cave deep in the Misty Mountains. He hated sunlight, moonlight, and elves. There in his cave, the ring corrupted him. His lifespan was elongated. One day, Gollum lost the ring and it was found by BIlbo. BIlbo escaped Gollum's wrath, but Gollum never stopped looking for the ring. He betrayed Frodo and Sam to Shelob when he was leading them through Mordor. At Mount Doom, Frodo refused to destroy the ring. Gollum cut the ring off of Frodo's finger and because of Frodo's curse, Gollum fell into the Cracks of Doom with the ring, and so ended the rule of Sauron. Orcs: Orcs were the Elves that were captured by Morgoth in the First Age, tortured and deformed into a horrible race that cannot live in the sun. They were Morgoth’s mockery of the Elves, whom he hated most. They hated their master, for he was the cause of their misery. Trolls: Trolls were creatures deformed by Morgoth as a mockery of Ents. |
