The Fifth Battle
Back
The Fifth Battle, also known as the Nirnaeth Arnoediad (The Battle of Unnumbered Tears).   Maedhros, a Son of Feanor, realized that Morgoth would wipe out each Elven kingdom one by one, if they would not unite.  He began therefore, the Union of Maedhros.  The Oath of Fëanor, however, clouded his designs and maybe even prevented victory.  Orodreth, the King of Nargothrond since Finrod had died, refused to go to war with any of the Sons of Fëanor.  Thingol refused to fight because of the threats made to him by the Sons of Fëanor to relinquish the Silmaril.  However, help came from the Dwarves and tidings of the war came to Turgon, King of hidden city of Gondolin.  Maedhros gathered an enormous army of Elves, Men, and Dwarves.  To his aid  came Fingon, High King of the

Noldor.  As the Fingon's army came towards the gates of Thangorodruin, a shadow fell upon Fingon's heart, for he did not see the army of Maedhros that was delayed.  Suddenly a cry went up, for the army of Gondolin had come, 10,000 strong.  When Fingon saw Turgon, his brother, he shouted, "Utúlie’n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie’n aurë!  Auta i lómë!"  (The day has come!  Behold, people of the Eldar and fathers of Men, the day has come!  The night is passing!)
Morgoth, however, anticipated the attack.  Many of the Noldor wished to attack Morgoth immediately.  Yet Húrin, the heir of the House of Hador, spoke against it and urged them to wait for the coming of Maedhros.  Then Morgoth brought Gelmir son of Guilin, a lord of Nargothrond and prisoner in Angband, and slew him.  The Noldor were kindled to wrath and the hosts of the Noldor attacked Morgoth.  The army of Fingon was beaten back with great loss and forced to retreat.  Many of the Men of Brethil were killed in the rear guard.  However, Turgon came with his legions of Gondolin and the meeting of Turgon and Fingon was glad in the midst of battle.  Maedhros then came, though Morgoth's army was too powerful to defeat.
But Morgoth assailed their forces, and Fingon died fighting Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs.  So fell the High King of the Noldor.  Finally, Turgon's forces retreated and Húrin and Huor became the rearguard, along with the brave Men of Dor-lomin.  Húrin at last stood alone and cried, "Aurë entuluva," (Day shall come again!) before he was captured by orcs and dragged to Angband.  Húrin's haughty words to Morgoth angered the Dark Lord, especially when Húrin refused to believe Morgoth could over power the Valar.  Morgoth therefore set a curse on Húrin and all his children.  The shadow of Morgoth would always follow them.
