The story of Túrin, who lived under the shadow of Morgoth, if perhaps the most moving tale of a Man who overcame his fate and performed a great deed among men. Túrin was the son of Húrin and Morwen, and heir to the House of Hador. He was tall and dark-haired, after the manner of his mother's kin, unlike the golden-haired decendants of the House of Hador. When Túrin was 5 years old, the Evil Breathe came to Dor-lómin and killed his favorite sister, Lalaith. From that day on, he always looked for the face of Lalaith in every woman he met. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

During the Union of Maedhros, Húrin rode away with the men of Dor-lómin to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, or the Fifth Battle. Túrin never saw his father again, but the curse that Morgoth put upon the kin of Húrin stayed with Túrin for the rest of his life. Morwen, who was with child, awaited the return of Húrin, but he never came. When Túrin was nine, the Easterlings came in great numbers and attacked the people of Hador, and enslaved them. They dared not enter the house of Morwen, for they feared that she a witch who had dealings with the Elves. So great was her beauty that many believed she herself was of the Eldar. She hid Túrin in her house for a while, but she realized that he must leave Dor-lómin or he would be taken by the Easterlings as a slave. Therefore, she sent him with two escorts to Doriath, and King Thingol took in Túrin as his foster son. Túrin never saw Morwen again. As Túrin grew older, he fought along the borders of Doriath with Beleg Strongbow. He won renown for his skill in battle and learned how to survive in the woods. As Túrin won the favor of King Thingol, and Elf named Saeros, who was the King's advisor, grew jealous of Túrin. He always opposed Túrin's councils to the king and taunted him. Saeros one day insulted Morwen and all ladies of Dor-lómin in front of Túrin. Túrin drew his sword, and action that was forbidden in the king's halls. Mablung, a great Elven hunter, restrained him, and Túrin left the halls without a word. The next day Saeros attacked Túrin at unawares with a sword. But Túrin, trained in the wild to wariness, quickly defeated Saeros. To punnish him for his insult, Túrin made Saeros cast off his garments and run naked through the woods. Túrin ran beind Saeros with his sword until they reached the banks of a river. Saeros, fearing that Túrin would kill him, leaped to his death into the river. Túrin, having no intentions of killing Saeros, fled out of Doriath as an outlaw. Túrin later met a band of outlaws and they quickly accepted him into their group because of his handiness with a sword. Túrin soon became the leader of the outlaws. Back in Doriath, King Thingol forgave Túrin for his deeds because he realized that Túrin was provoked by Saeros, whom attacked him first. Thingol sent Beleg, Túrin's friend, to find him and bring him back to Doriath. Beleg found the band of outlaws, but Túrin had not yet arrived. The outlaws tied Beleg and tortured him cruely. When Túrin came, he commanded that Beleg should be released. Beleg told Túrin that he was pardoned of all his crimes, and advised him to return to Doriath and leave the outlaws. But Túrin, in his pride, refused to return. Beleg therefore returned to Doriath and told Thingol of Túrin's refuseal to come to Doriath. Beleg asked Thingol to stay with Túrin, and hopefully persuade him to come back to Doriath. Thingol, in gratitude, gave him Gurthang, the Black Sword, and Beleg departed again in search of Túrin. Túrin and the outlaws captured the Dwarf, Mîm, and to safe his life, the Dwarf allowed the outlaws to dwell with him. Beleg found Túrin with Mîm, and stayed for a while with Túrin. When Mîm and his son were gathering roots for the winter, they were captured by orcs, and revealed thier home. Therefore, the orcs attacked Bar-en-Danwedh (or Amon Rudh) and killed all save Beleg and captured Túrin. Beleg, determined to save his friend, followed the orcs to Angband, the dark fortress of Morgoth, and there he met Gwindor, a survivor of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad who escaped the dungeons of Angband. Beleg and Gwindor eventually caught up with the orcs and while they slept, and they rescued Túrin, who was unconscious. As Beleg untied his bonds, Túrin awoke. Thinking that Beleg was an orc coming to torture him, he took Gurthang and slew Beleg, truest of friends, and this grief was graven on the face of Túrin. Gwindor took Túrin to Nargothrond, and there they dwelt in honor. Túrin rose in the esteem of Orodreth, King of Nargorthrond. He also had the love of Finduilas, daughter of the king. Soon Orcs invaded Nargothrond, for Túrin persuaded the King to fight in open war, and Morgoth found Nargothrond. Gwindor, dying, told Túrin to go back to Nargothrond and save Finduilas. In Nargothrond, Túrin was confronted by the dragon, Glaurung, and he looked into its perilous eyes. The dragon told him to go to Dor-lómin, for Morwen and Nienor were in need of aid. Therefore, being under the spell of Glaurung, he departed, and left Finduilas to be enslaved by the orcs. He went to Dor-lómin and found that Morwen and his sister Nienor had fled to Doriath and were in the keeping of King Thingol. Túrin then rushed back to save Finduilas, but it was too late. Finduilas had been killed by the orcs when the people of Brethil attempted to save her. Túrin befriended the people of Brethil and became a great warrior among them. When they heard about the ruin of Nargothrond, Morwen and Nienor were determined to find Túrin. Thingol did not agree to this idea, but sent them with an escort for their safety. Nienor snuck into the escort against her mother's will, but was allowed to continue on the journey to Nargothrond. When they arrived, they found the city was captured by a dragon, with no trace of Túrin. The dragon soon realized that Túrin's family was there and attacked the escort. The horses went wild with fear and the escort was dismantled leaving Nienor alone, for Morwen's horse had fled in the onset of Glaurung. Nienor looked into the eyes of the dragon and fell under a spell. She could not remember anything about who she was, or even how to speak. Soon she wandered into Brethil. The Men of Brethil took her in and taught her who to speak. Túrin and Nienor fell in love, for Túrin saw the face of Lalaith his sister in the eyes of Nienor, and called her Níniel. They got married and Nienor concieved. Turin lived in peace for a short while. However, the Men of Brethil were aware that the dragon Glaurung was coming for Túrin in Brethil and he would destroy their town. Túrin, therefore, set out with two men to waylay the dragon before it came to Brethil. One of Túrin's companions was a coward and could not continue with the plan that they had devised. The other died on the way. Túrin was left alone to kill the dragon. As the dragon lept from one cliff to another in an attempt to cross a river on the borders of Brethil, Túrin came from underneath the belly of the great dragon and slew him. As Túrin took his sword out of the dragon' s hide, the poisonious blood of Glaurung spilled onto his hand and Túrin fell into a swoon. Nienor came to the place where Túrin lay. Suddenly Glaurung stirred, and told Nienor of her lost memories, and that Túrin was her brother. In her despair, and thinking Túrin dead, she cast herself into a river and died. The only witness to her death was Brandir the Lame. Túrin awoke and came back to Brethil and was told that Nienor was dead. In his rage, he killed Brandir and ran to the grave of Finduilas, where he met Mablung and the other Elves who had looked for tidings of Morwen and Nienor. Mablung told Túrin all that befell his mother and Nienor. Realizing that he had killed Brandir unjustly and that he had wedded his own sister who now was dead, Túrin ran to where Glaurung laid, and with his sword, Gurthang, he took his own life. The shadow of Morgoth that led to the death of Túrin also befell the Elven city of Nargothrond. Morgoth had yet to destroy the hidden city of Gondolin and the guarded realm of Doriath. |
