The Bourtreehillians: Hidden Structures #3 | |||||||||||||||

There is evidence of at least three carriage gateways, two of which are still guarded by thick gateposts. The third has been lost and has only recently been identified. An original beech hedge still grows along a road inside the estate. The surface of the road can be viewed and the avenue of trees are still in situ. This road, which is now blocked, has no apparent entranceway. The gates are long lost. There are the remains of brick bordered path, running perhaps 100m and notable for its once tranquil surroundings. This area has several locally rare or exotic species of tree, many of which were planted by the original owners of the estate. Indeed, Bourtreehill until recently had a few specimens of Giant Sequoia or Wellingtonia, which is the tallest species of tree on the planet. Those found in Bourtreehill may not have the same stature as those found in the USA Canyons (from which our own giant was born) but it is still the biggest tree in Bourtreehill. |
