#3
SECRET YEARS #3: "TERMINUS". Clark gives Billy Cramer a gift--a supersonic whistle. If Billy ever happens to spot an emergency, all Billy has to do is blow the whistle and Superboy will arrive to help.
Later, Pete Ross visits his good friend Clark Kent at Metropolis University for a basketball game. All three go to the game and when Clark spots an emergency with his X-ray vision, both Billy and Pete dump food on Clark to give him an excuse to change into Superboy. Homorously, Billy and Pete wonder if they both know Clark's secret.
Superboy puts out a fire in a fireworks building. That night, Clark visits Lori Lemaris. She informs him that she's leaving Metropolis. Clark's heart is broken--he quickly asks her hand in marriage, for he loves her. Before he can explain that he is Superboy, Lori tells him that she already knows. She had always known. But she had to be home by 8 O'Clock every evening. That was her curfew. Leaving Clark empty-handed, Clark decided to investigate Lori and her 'mysterious' curfew.
Going to her trailor, he sees a water-tank and figures out that she is a mermaid. Superboy demands an answer. Lori replies that she is on 'a mission' and due to being a mermaid she can never love him. In rage, Superboy goes back to the dorm. Billy wants him to go to the last football game of the year with him, but Clark is too upset. That night, Billy blows the supersonic whistle so that he can talk things out with Superboy. Superboy furthers his rage, telling Billy that the whistle is only for emergencies. Storming off, Superboy goes to Lori's place. They find an agreement, both realizing that a relationship would be impossible.
Moments later, they hear of a dam that collapsed closeby. Both Superboy and Lori (as a Mermaid) jump into the violent ocean and saves several people from drowning. Superboy, with a touch of sadness, takes Lori home after their triumph, back to the sunken world of Atlantis and kisses her goodbye underwater.
Superboy thought that he should go back and apologize to Billy, but before he can, a small Island nearby is in danger by a tsunami. Superboy does his best to save the island and ironically, at the same time, Billy's whistle blows. Searching with his x-ray vision, Superboy sees that Billy is trapped in a building that is on fire. Superboy has to make a choice--either he can save hundreds of lives or one person, Billy. He rescues the island first then races back home--but he doesn't reach Billy in time.
Again, Superboy failed to save those that he loves the most.
