During the late 1850s and the Civil War years, Bishop Thomas Atkinson and missionary-minded priests passing through Richmond County occasionally celebrated Holy Communion and administered Holy Baptism to Richmond County's Episcopal families. The number of Episcopalians swelled over the next four decades, resulting in the Church of the Messiah and the building of the present Church Building in 1899. The building was formally consecrated for public  worship by Bishop Joseph B. Cheshire on Sunday, October 14, 1899.

The Church of the Messiah today is a small congregation with much enthusiasm for the future. Opportunities for deepening faith in Christ, fellowship, and fun activities make this an active and lively Christian community firmly rooted in the Gospel.
