THE SWEET THINGS – Why Wait Until Tomorrow? EP

Wiped Out Records (WO-010) 2003

In this piece of wax you will listen to Les Godzillas singing accompanied by Stompin’ Harvey & His Fast Wreckers under the name of “Sweet Things”. There are 3 songs of RnB beat and pop, obviously girly vocals and harmonies plus some nice guitar. I don’t know if this is a real band or just a studio project but it’s surely pleasant to my ears. File next to Les Godzillas and Slow Slushy Boys.

PAINTED AIR Vs. PANCAKES – Serial Killer/Over The Hill

Swamp Room Records (3868-17) 2002

That’s another split 45 by Swamp Room Records inside a company sleeve that reminds me those company sleeves that Voxx used to release back in the 80’s. The last time I’ve listened to Painted Air was in 1997 from their Missed Your Plane EP that was released by this same label. They were more in the garage punk as far as I remember cause “Serial Killer” that appears in here is more in the Stooges alike sound. The vocals, the lyrics and the guitars remind me more the Stooges than the Shadows Of Knight. That’s a nice song anyway. The Pancakes on the B-Side are a crossover band between Jefferson Airplane, Mad Violets and Sonic Youth! At least that’s exactly what I experienced by listening to their song in here…There is also a bonus track in here hidden with some harmonica and a diction in german! LOS NUGGETS – Never Trusted You/Dino’s Call

Corduroy Records (CORD114) 2003

It seems that lately the Spanish garage punk bands prefer to release their stuff in Australian labels…! Los Nuggets after a nice 45 and an LP are performing two new songs on Corduroy label and they seem to have made quite a progress. “Never Trusted You” is a tight garage punker which reminds a lot of the Cynics while “Dino’s Call” is an RnB tune with some harp too. The strong point of the 45 is the good production of its songs. A point that every band should take care of, cause it’s really sad to listen to nice songs but not well produced…Get all Corduroy stuff at http://www.corduroy.com.au

THE RIVIERA PLAYBOYS – I Can’t Understand EP

Northern Alliance Records (NORTHERN 01) 2003

It’s been sometime since the last recordings by that cool US band and here they are with this nice new platter. Two garage punkers and one RnB tune is what we find in here. “I Can’t Understand” is a typical garage punk stomper with loud guitars and mid tempo ala Lyres. “Loveman” is in the RnB roots while “Warning” is the well known garage punker from the 60s Humans” that appears in the “Back From The Grave Vol.5”. Nice production, well played record.

GLI ULTIMI – Non E’ Destino EP

Psych-Out Records (PO-45011) 2003

Gli Ultimi are obviously from Italy and it’s more obvious when you will play this 45 that their music is inspired by bands like The Remains, The Yardbirds and The Hollies. This is a beat/pop record including 4 songs with nice melodies and harmonies by Gli Ultimi. All tunes are sung in Italian and hopefully the sleeve isn’t made by that hard cardboard that Psych-Out is using on the LPs! Email Gli Ultimi at gliultimi@hotmail.com

LES SLOW SLUSHY BOYS – Slush Puppy/Das Weiss Der Teufel

Butterfly Records (BUT-20) 2003

Here is one more nice record by these French guys! This time on the Butterfly label from Spain. “Slush Puppy” is a groovy instro pop tune on A-Side and “Das Weiss Der Teufel” is an organ-fueled instro too on the B-side, which make this platter very pleasant and a nice addition to the previous Slow Slushy Boys releases. CURLEE WURLEE – SOS Mademoiselles EP (PicDisc)

Butterfly Records (BUT-18) 2003

That’s another nice Butterfly Records release, this time by the crazy German band named Curlee Wurlee. There are 4 songs appearing in here in a beat pop mood with girly vocals and upfront organ sound. I find the sounds on this record a little bit different than the previous ones or maybe more moody or sweeter… Anyway these recordings are one fine combination between Les Godzillas, the Brood and Cecilia Et Ses Ennuis.
