THE INTELLIGISTA – Bang! Bang!, 7” EP

Unity Squad Records (USR 018) 2003

Here is a promising new band from California, USA. These 17 years old guys play solid Rhythm and Beat and they do it with style, Rickenbackers and an organ! The 45 includes three fine songs, two with vocals (‘Bang! Bang!’ & Get up And Go’) and one instro (‘Theme From The Intelligista’) all composed by the mind of the band, Nick Waterman who plays the guitar. The other members are Anthony James Polizzi on drums, Kyle Stephens on bass and Kevin Van on the organ. The Intelligista seem to be very talented and I am really excited about their effort while I can’t wait for their next one.

THE WAISTCOATS – It’s Not Me, 7” EP

Pure Vinyl Records (no number) 2003

I don’t know if there have been any line up changes in The Waistcoats but this 45 has been recorded by three of them: Jan Herman Veldkamp, Gerard Burger and Jack Outhuis. Anyway, this 45 sounds mostly like their last LP on Larsen Records, ‘In Our Eyes’, which was the greatest record by The Waistcoats until today. The trashy and raw garage punk days are gone for good and the sounds remain in the fine tradition of Beat and R’n’B. I should also notice that even this 45 is recorded in Toe Rag Studios! So, this 45 is performed by a band from the Netherlands, recorded in the UK and released from a label from Austria! It’ a beat beat world!

THEE FLYING DUTCHMEN – Live Devil’s Club, 7” EP

Boom! Boom! Records (BB45004) 2003

Yeah, these guys and gal are undoubtedly crazy at all! Thee Flying Dutchmen play and produce the trashiest lo-fi garage punk you could ever think, as they are genuine offspring of The Mummies and Supercharger. The EP includes 4 songs, 3 vocal and one instro, ‘Stumbling Bear’, all recorded live and in mono. If you are pissed-off with the prices you see in ebay when a Pre BS Mummies record appears there, forget about it and get Thee Flying Dutchmen stuff NOW! You won’t regret it and you might earn some really nice bucks in the future when Thee Dutchmen will be gone and deleted like the gurus of lo-fi, The Mummies! Go! Go! Go!

THE RIPPERS – Pleased To Rip You!, 7” EP

Psych-Out Records (PO-45013) 2003

This is the 3rd Rippers 45, this time on their native Psych-Out Records, which includes 4 storming tunes full of RnB guitar lines, snotty vocals and harp. File next to The Tell Tale Hearts, The Primates and The Gravedigger V. Nothing more to say, dig it or leave it!

ROCKET SCIENCE - Burn In Hell, 7” EP

Voodoo Rhythm Records (VR710) 2003

Rocket Science come from Australia and deliver wild and raw garage punk. This 45 includes four demented punkers (‘Burn In Hell, ‘Crazy’, ‘Copycat’ & ‘Six foot 4’) filled with upfront organ and eerie vocals, a fine mixture between The Outta Place and The Stooges. Rocket Science are the right band for being guests to the “home of primitive Rock’n’Roll” which is Voodoo Rhythm Records, indeed!

THE MARSHMALLOW OVERCOAT – The Psilocybic Mind, 7” EP

Psych-Out Records (PO-45012) 2003

The Marshmallow Overcoat have been around since the eighties and I thought that they were split since the mid nineties. This EP comes to prove that the flame is still burning and The Overcoat are back with 4 songs and one of them (‘Knights Of Fuzz’) appeared in the same titled CD-ROM encyclopedia of the 80s and 90s garage punk music that Timothy Gassen put out some years ago. Timothy Gassen is doing his peculiar vocals again in here and plays the organ too. The band joins Scot Gassen (maybe his brother?) on drums, Matt Rendon on bass and guitar and Chad White on guitar too. All songs are in the same garage psyche form that made The Marshmallow Overcoat famous among the garage punkers in the 80s and 90s era. Maybe more similar to the ‘Baroque Sounds’ album that has been released by Misty Lane and ‘A touch Of Evil’ album by Music Maniac rather than the first ones on Dionysus and Get Hip. Take this Groovy Little Trip to the psychedelic sounds of The Overcoat and you won’t be disappointed at all.
