THE CHESTERFIELD KINGS – The Mindbending Sounds Of…, LP

Sundazed Music (SUNDAZED LP 5174) 2003

The Chesterfield Kings were one of the pioneer bands in the garage punk explosion in the early eighties. They put out three - unbelievably rare today – 45s and a self-titled album which are equal to any 60s record while they will remain as trademarks to the 80s garage punk music for good. Their authentic style and spontaneous talent were more than enough for everyone who was in any way connected with the garage/psyche 80s movement to compare The Chesterfield Kings with bands from the 60s like Chocolate Watch Band and yet to doubt which one was better than the other… The Chesterfield Kings from Rochester, home of The Projectiles too, covered many 60s songs in their first three albums but always did it with respect to the original. They managed to create a feeling that all songs that they covered, they were theirs as they were capable to transmit their primal energy and genuine feelings to the songs they covered and not just play their notes and sing their words.

In this new album after 21 long years since their first one on Living Eye Records, The Chesterfield Kings refuse to play any cover and they offer 12 original songs, which the future garage punkers will cover not for their own pleasure but also to put a tribute to the Kings too. All compositions are written by the master minds of the band: Andy Babiuk and Greg Prevost while in four of them joined for help the lead guitar player, Paul Morabito. The album opens with ‘I Don’t Understand’ that appeared in a 45 that was released in 2000 by Sundazed but with a different title and slightly changed words, which was titled ‘Yes I Understand’. This song is co-written by Babiuk, Prevost & Little Steven and also produced by him. Another great song is ‘Trip Through Tomorrow’ which along with ‘Transparent Life’, ‘Mystery Trip’ and ‘The Fading On My Mind’ are the most psychedelic songs that The Chesterfield Kings ever wrote. If I wanted only one word to describe this album and the sounds that are bouncing from here I would use ‘Punkadelic’ as this word is the proper to describe the perfect mixture of sounds and images that these songs are creating.

Except the previously mentioned and more on psychedelic side songs, the Chesterfield Kings included some punkers too in here like ‘Disconnection’ and ‘Endless Circles’ but the general feeling I get from all these recordings is that The Chesterfield Kings have managed (for once more) to create a masterpiece of music. I left ‘Stems And Flowers’ last to write about as this song really messed me up when I first listened to it. This song is co-written by the Kings and Sky Saxon himself. So, when the needle started to spin between the lines of that song, I thought that it was the Seeds that they were performing! Every single sound in that song from the guitar to the drums and of course the vocals are similar to The Seeds sound and it’s like you’re back in 1966!

The production of the album is over any standard any garage band ever had. And do you want to know some of the instruments the band used for the recordings apart from guitars? Here are some: violin, viola, claves, castanets, sitar, theremin, piano, mandolin…. Get this album as its already a classic.

THE RIPPERS – S/T, LP

Screaming Apple (SCALP 148) 2003

Woo-Hoo!! This an RnB gem without a second thought! The Rippers from Cagliari, Italy are one of the happiest surprises in 2003 as they have managed to create a unique and solid RnB record with no fillers but only killers! The band is very talented and that’s obvious in every single song in here. It’s really incredible that these Italians have captured that feeling and successfully transferred it into their music without being Americans or British. In fact The Rippers are the only band today that are exclusively playing this kind of music, meaning only RnB. This album contains 13 songs (10 originals and 3 covers) of unstoppable beat and screams ala Motions, Peter & The Blizzards and Morlocks. If you loved both the volumes of ‘Transworld Punk’ compilation you will certainly love this one too. It’s Wild Raw Beat RnB Punk not from 1964-1966 but from Today!!!

THE VIVISECTORS – S/T, CD

Private label 2003

“Lo-fi Psychosurf band from Deep Russian Underground”! That’s how these lads from Moscow, Russia are calling themselves and they are just accurate! The Vivisectors play instrumental music borrowing music elements from the Bomboras & The Phantom Surfers and all the surf madness that conquered the US some years ago along with the spaghetti western instromania ala Hank Ray, the 50s instro-motives ala Charles Napiers and the sci-fi instro alien invasion of bands like Man Or Astroman?. This CD includes 27 instro tunes with titles like ‘Go-Go’, ‘El Zorro Theme’, ‘Transylvanian Train’, ‘Alien In A Government’, ‘Russki Psycho’. The Vivisectors also perform an instrumental version of ‘The Animals’ ‘House Of The Rising Son’! These Russians have another CD too titled ‘Case History Of John Dee’ which includes 26 songs of the same style and instromania. Some of these tunes are included in this CD that is being reviewed here, which it seems to be a collection of the best \Vivisectors tracks. I bet every Russian Astronaut carries a Vivisectors CD in his spaceship, so why not you here in earth?
