THE MAGGOTS – Do The Maggot!, LP

Low Impact Records (lir 016-1) 2003

Along with The Maggots first 2 45s (‘Apeman 2000’ & ‘Grrr’ EP) this LP is the bands best record until today, in my humble opinion. Not that the previous releases were weak or bad, but this album contains 12 songs of which at least the 12 of them (!) are remarkable and will stick into your mind from the first spin! Mans P. Mansson is on guitar & vocals, Jonas Lundberg on drums, tambourine & backing vocals and Stefan Hellstrom on bass. And they even use piano and congas while Jens Lindberg appears in here as a guest and screaming in a song titled ‘Circle Sky’. Generally the album is making his way through the roots of garage punk with loud guitars, which sometimes reminds me a little of The Lime Spiders. The song that you will notice from the first spin is ‘Goin’ Ga Ga (Over You)’ which has a refrain that will sing to the following days. It’s also recommended to put this song on your turntable just when the next candidate girlfriend is ringing the bell of your apartment and you just don’t know what to do or how to act to express your inner feelings to her. Then you could just leave this platter spinning round and round to the next song that is called ‘You Make Me Shake’! It would be the perfect soundtrack to move on to the second step of acquaintance with this girl we were talking about…! But please stop the record after this one ends, as ‘I Know Your Name’ and ‘You‘re So Ugly (That It Hurts)’ that follows would be completely inefficient!

‘It’s Gonna Be Alright’ is another great song in here with slow tempo and moody feeling. The Maggots put a tribute to The Cramps with ‘Out Of My Cave’ (what a grrrrrreat title, indeed!!!), which begins with a Crampsy guitar riff and echoing guitar sound but leads to another brilliant Maggots blaster. My fave on this album is ‘Running Out Of Time’, mostly because of the fab guitar work on the riffs and the splendid refrain.

Get this album without second thought, as I believe it’s one of the best this year. Play Loud & Do The Maggot!

LOS STRAITJACKETS – Los Vivos Y Los Rapos, CD

Animal Records (Animal cd 37/03) 2003

I don’t know if Nashville in Texas has any strong tradition in surf bands but Los Straitjackets have been around since many years and still performing the best surf sounds from the US as they are extremely talented. It might turned to be a surf bands storm since Tarantino included Misirlou in Pulp Fiction and much shit came out the last years but these guys are really great. Their leader and guitarist, Eddie Angel, is also playing with The Neanderthals and The Planet Rockets while he is also sitting on the boss chair at Spinout Records! Animal Records from Spain assumed to release this fab surf album this time and support Los Straitjackets to the Europe audience. Apart from the surf madness in this CD you can also listen to Peter Zaremba of the mighty Fleshtones singing ‘La Novia’! Dave Alvin and Reverend Horton Heat appear on vocals too on ‘Bim Bam Baby’ and ‘I Thought It Over’. Link Wray isn’t missing from here as ‘Jack The Ripper’ is covered from the band and the album contains 12 well-crafted songs overall. This is a spectacular sonic assault by Los Straitjackets is a definitive must-have as it also (!) contains a super cover of ‘Out Of Limits’!

GEW-GAW’S QUADRAPHONIC SNAIL, Compilation CD

Nowhere Street Music (gg483) given away with Gew-Gaw magazine issue # 3, 2003

Gew-Gaw is a Greek magazine that has been around since the nineties and has released some nice issues in Greek language and a Fiends 45 in the meanwhile (‘She’s Not Broken’). Since sometime it is issued in English and it’s dedicated mostly to psychedelic music while it also offers one CD with its every edition. This time Gew-Gaw has articles about Purple Overdose (Greek psychedelic band), Painted Air (garage band from Germany) etc. plus some record reviews and some really psyche artwork. The CD has interested me for two bands: The Yesterday’s Thoughts and Baby Woodrose. The Yesterday’s Thoughts are from Greece, they play 60’s style garage punk and they already have two records out: One LP and one 45 on Action Records [actionrecgr@hotmail.com]. Their song, ‘I Don’t Love You’, which opens this CD compilation is a typical organ-fuzz-snottyvocals garage punker (my beloved!!!) with the typical “Go Away Cauz I Hate You!” lyrics (my beloved!!!) and it’s previously unreleased. Baby Woodrose from Denmark have become famous lately with their album release on Bad Afro and I think they deserve it. Their tune in here, titled ‘Maya’, also appeared on their 1st album by Pan Records, which in fact was an one-man project by Lorenzo Woodrose. The Dead Moon/Lollipop Shoppe influences are at least obvious in their music and ‘Maya’ is a real garage/psyche gem. Nick Bensen, Murmurs Of Irma, Color Cacas and Translucent are some names of the other bands that also appear in this psychedelic compilation.
