LES SYNAPSES – Enregistre Au
Garage, CD Demo, 2003 Les
Synapses are a five-piece garage punk band from France. The members are Jerome Daniel (vocals), Guillaume
Tranié (drums), Ante Ljubicic (guitar), Eric Lefebvre (bass), Arno
Porcheron (organ) and their name comes from a medical word for connection
between neurones that you can activate them by LSD for example! The band was
called ‘Innerspace’ in the beginning but they changed it to ‘Les Synapses’ as
they now sing more songs in French and wanted to get a French name too. This demo includes six garage punk and psyche songs with totally
vintage sound, like they were really recorded in the sixties era! In fact it’s like you spin any of the ‘Back From The Grave’ volumes!
Maybe the cover versions of the following songs that are included in here
help Les Synapses to create and perform this 60’s feeling: Shake, Mon Pere
Est Millionaire, Love At Psychedelic Velocity, Beaver Patrol, Suzie Creamcheese,
Lesions Si Dangereuses. I can’t wait to listen to more of Les Synapses and
definitely on vinyl wax! You can get in contact with Arno at synapses@clan.st and get that fab demo while it lasts. |

V/A – Today
Is Just Tomorrow’s Yesterday Vol. I, CD compilation Misty Lane Records (Misty 068) 2003, given away with Misty Lane magazine # 18 Here is another great release by the legendary Misty Lane records and Massimo Del Pozzo, owner of the Teen Sound label and Misty Lane magazine and label. This CD is given for free with the latest issue of the magazine, which offers plenty of articles, reviews and stories about 60’s till today garage punk, mod, folk, beat, pop, psyche etc etc…! I will focus on the new bands not the 60’s ones that are included in here as ‘Thee Cave’ is a site about garage punk music from the 80’s till now but I think that you should have already noticed that … Well, among the 60’s bands you will have the pleasure to enjoy unreleased songs from The Sick Rose, The Giljoteens, Tyme Society, Acid Lemon and The Rippers. The Giljoteens are performing “You’re Better Off Alone” featuring ex Crimson Shadows and Wylde Mammoths singer Peter Maniette! This is a really good reason to get this compilation indeed! Massimo’s Tyme Society who had two splendid 45s out in the near past, perform ‘E. C. Waltz’, which is a Love influenced gem! The most pleasant surprise I had listening to this CD was the song of a new band named Acid Lemon from Turin, Italy. They perform ‘No More’ which is a fab punker and it’s also said that Teen sound will release their debut mini LP out very soon! Except the above there are also included songs by Tina Peel (Rudi Protrudi and Deb O’Nair before The Fuzztones era), The Outta Place, The Stomachmouths, The Maharajas, The Poets, The Movin’ Sounds and Tonny Borlotti E I Suoi Flauers. V/A – Rock
Jam 002, CD compilation Rock Jam (002) given away with Rock Jam magazine issue # 002, 2003 Rock Jam is a new Greek magazine written in Greek and that’s the second issue that comes with a CD compilation of 4 Greek bands: The Ducky Boys, The Psykicks, The Sanders and Green Onions. I’ve seen The Ducky Boys live with The Fuzztones in Athens and proved to be a very tight band playing rock’n’roll music mostly based in the lines of rockabilly and psychobilly infected from the similar early british era and bands like The Meteors. In this compilation The Ducky Boys appear with 5 songs from which my fave is the uptempo and melodic one titled ‘Waiting For Yesterday’, which reminds me a lot of the early days of The Last Drive. The Psykicks are a 6-piece combo from Athens playing a mixture of garage punk and 70s American punk. They offer 4 songs in this CD and above all stands the one titled ‘I’ll Be Gone’ which is a real garage punk monster! In 1991 The Sanders from Athens recorded their 1st demo that was a fine garage punk output and it was titled ‘Night Of The Sanders’. They made two more demo tapes in 1992 and 1993 and then called it a day. I believe that they deserved to have something released on vinyl, maybe a 45, as they were really nice. This CD complies 5 of their songs, which are obviously infected by the sound of the most important Greek garage band of the eighties, The Last Drive. The last band featuring in here are Green Onions, a blues band far out of my tastes. In the magazine you can read articles about Plasticland, The Electric Prunes, Fifty Foot Hose, The Haunted, The Action with full discography liner notes plus some more record reviews. |

THE DEFECTORS Vs. DRIVE BY SHOOTING – The Zoom-Out / Space Game, 7” split single Swamp Room Records (3868.23) 2003 After a great split single with Baby Woodrose (see previous review in ‘Thee Cave’), The Defectors are coming back again with one more split 45, this time with a band called ‘Drive By Shooting’, which I find out of my interests as they seem to be a crossover between Monster Magnet and Motorhead in a blender of psyche… ‘The Zoom-Out’ is a fine garage punker with continuous mid tempo drum pounding, great sounding organ and in the standard Defectors tradition. Anyway, I would prefer a 45 with the Defectors on one side and a similar band to the other but it’s Swamp Room Records that is affording the money for these releases to come out. |

BEAT BY FIVE – Ami 6 / I Wanna Be Alone Bee Jay Records (BJR 101) 2003 That’s the second record by the Beat By Five coming after their debut 7” EP titled ‘Reasons Why’ in 2002. Both songs in here are in the mod beat style and inspired from cars and girls. The name of the band is clearly impressing what they are up to… Five guys are playing beat music! These guys are C. Rudi Muller on vocals/guitar, Bodo Brauer on drums, Gunnar Gnauck on organ, Ingo Jurgens on guitar and Dirk Grundner on bass. The label is owned by their drummer and their dream came true! Brilliant! |
